    Chat - Week of November 10, 2014

Thought I'd put the year in the thread title so it'll stand out from all the ancient threads that are popping up on that main "sticky" page.  Tongue Tied

To follow-up on a couple things from the weekend's post:  Callie, your point about abuse patterns in future generations and the "million decisions a day" concept is a good one.  I think people do one of two things when it comes to modeling negative behaviors they saw in childhood:  they do the exact same thing their parents did (like domestic violence, drug or alcohol problems, making reckless financial choices, etc.).  Or, they do a 180-degree flip and do the opposite (avoid all drugs or alcohol, work to be ideal parents, become very conscious of careful budgeting, etc.)  But making that flip required constant commitment and hard work.

Doug, your cribbage boards are beautiful!  What a special gift idea!  They'll be cherished for years.

Kate, I hope you're feeling better after your flu-shot issues.  The last time I had one, I had some crummy side-effects, too.  I've skipped them in recent years, but the other day DH was saying we should get them this year.  We're getting old enough now that it's even more important.

Maureen, your image of me zooming around with a dust mop and bottle of 409 on Friday was pretty accurate.  I burned more than a few calories moving as quickly as possible.  I actually had about an hour to sit and relax before they arrived (not until close to 10pm).  We had a fun visit -- lots of eating, lots of microbrew sampling (for the guys), and  we even took Ruby to the beach, although it was a bit too cold and blustery to walk much.  Back to our normal quiet routine today.

I hope the veterans in all the iDog families know they are appreciated!

I cleaned out gutters this past weekend. I also got new batteries in all my watches. The fun never ends around here.

It's 20 degrees out right now, the yard is white, the road is ice.  Pup didn't recognize the yard-he's never seen snow before.  Off to work.  Uff da!!!(this is an expletive that should be deleted))

I remember the first sight of snow with Rocky and with Shadow when they were pups, it was so much fun watching their discovery.   Hot Shot  loves to play in the snow, guess I might to if I carried that much of a furr coat with me all the time.

It was 22 degrees here this morning with a 16 degree wind chill,  it will be 15 degrees in the morning, they are calling it round 2 with round 3 coming on Saturday....hey people this is ARKANSAS!!!

I am back at work, made it half a day Monday, all day yesterday and today I will leave early to go with Ron to a follow up with the heart doctor.   I am glad I am back but after being out so long I didn't sleep Sunday night, had the first day of school nerves.  Kept thinking I was going to miss the alarm so I woke up every hour, lol.

Thinking about Charles and Jackie, hope the first Chemo went ok.  Continued thoughts and prayers .

Hey Ginger - good to see you! I hope Ron's appointment goes well.

    I've been swamped with work.

I see that many 2007 posts have returned, even ones that nobody replied to recently. This is one reason why the forum is dying. I can no longer log out without having to restart my computer, so it's not handy for me to pop in and out.

Winter has arrived in Michigan, although I think Arkansas is colder than we are.

A tenant who lives upstairs above our office bought a new couch, but he could not get it up the stairwell. It has been sitting in the office waiting for expert furniture movers to arrive. I did not volunteer. Indifferent I would have taken a nap on it to test it out if I'd had time. Stick out tongue

Ron's appointment went well.  His heart is still in rhythm , EKG looked good,  BP is a little high but not dangerous.  His BP is always higher when waiting for ever to get out of the lobby and into a room. :)  We were quite happy so we celebrated by going out to eat and then to Walgreens for a new BP monitor. Ha...we used to go dancing and partying now we eat, go get medical supplies and go home to bed.

The high today in AR is 29 burrrr.

Glad to hear that Ron's appointment went well, Ginger.  I hope you're finding it easier to adjust to being back at work as the week goes on.

This made me laugh because it reminds me of something my friend said to me recently.  It was her birthday a few weeks ago, and we were scheduled to go out for lunch on the Friday of her birthday week.  She called me that morning and said she had to cancel because she was home ill with some major digestive issues.  She'd had several birthday lunches and dinners that week, and by Thursday night, she was sick from all the heavy, rich food.  We were laughing at what a difference it is to have a birthday week wear you out when you're 50+ versus when you're 20-30 years younger.  Instead of getting worn out from too much partying, she was worn out from too much eating!  Big Smile

Freezing rain and cold temps moved in during the night -- all the trees and plants were covered in ice this morning.  I was afraid the roads would be a nightmare, but it was about 34 degrees and raining, so the drive in was okay.  Fingers crossed that the temps don't drop any lower or it'll be an ice rink for the drive home.  Winter is here!

Yes, all the old posts from 2007 are SOOOOOO annoying.  I don't understand technical stuff, website building, and the like, but seriously . . . why can't they do something about that?  It's totally ridiculous to have that kind of clutter, not to mention a waste of time for anyone who posts to those threads because the discussion died 7+ years ago!

On pins and needles waiting to hear how Moms battery replacement for her pacemaker went.  She's almost 91 and even minor surgery can be tough.  Today is Sis's bday....not a great way to spend it.

Glad to hear all is well with Ron.   Hope that Charles first chemo wasn't too awful.

Glenda; I hope your mom's doing well.

Ginger; glad you've been doing well since the surgery and that your hubby's check up went well.

Jackie; Sending good thoughts for Charlie; I'll keep you in my prayers. Hope he responds well to the chemo.

I've seen people posting to old threads because they were searching for something.  So that might be part of it.

Back to work this week ... life goes on and on and on ...

Tracy ... I think most of us either become like our folks or a reaction to them.  But when you get those same folks nibbing in and offering relentless advice "Well I wouldn't let HER get away with that!! " ...

My parents have brought up in 'conversation' EVERY time we've seen them in the 17 yrs married + 1 yr dating -- how they used to 'discipline' me when I was 3.  How they tied me in a chair, how they "whupped the tar" out of me, washed my mouth out with soap, yada yada ... my husband is always incredulous "Don't they know they'd be arrested for that crap now?"

But ... it made me who I am so .... life goes on ...

Ginger I get it SO well.  This month Saturday afternoon was going to the various medical supplies places in search of tape that would stay on but not make me itch!  HOW FUN!!!

LOL, weren't you and I talking about belly dancing just a few years back :)  Maybe it was a few years more that I care to remember.

Thanks for the good thoughts.  Mom came through the procedure with no real issues.

We have snow on the ground  Blech!

    • Gold Top Dog

Glenda, I'm glad to hear your mother's procedure went well.  It's always a worry when people of very advanced ages have to go under any kind of anesthesia.

Callie, good news that you're back at work.  I hope things have stabilized for good for you now.  You've had to deal with too much!

When I got to our neighborhood after work yesterday, I was stunned.  Nearly every yard had a tree with several limbs broken off (or worse).  I got to our house to find a front yard that looked like a tornado or something had blown through.  A huge pear tree was in pieces, a crepe myrtle was split to the ground in 3 places, and our gorgeous coral bark maple was broken at about a foot above the ground.  The side and backyards didn't fare much better -- another huge pear tree split apart, another crepe myrtle, and a flowering currant -- all a wreck.

Our street sits just a few hundred feet above the main part of town, but that must've been enough to keep the ice solid all day, and the weight of it, along with plenty of leaves still on everything, was too much.  We had no power for a while last night (dinner was on the grille), and off again for a couple hours this morning.  Still too much ice to try clean up the mess, so we'll see what we can do this weekend.

I am grateful that nothing damaged our house (with Ruby inside!), but I'm so sad about the loss of so many major focal parts of our tiny yard.  The expense of clearing it all away will be bad enough, but if we want to replace anything, that'll be even more.  And it'll be another 10+ years before anything will mature to that level.  I know -- first world problem -- but I'm so bummed.

Hope everyone is staying warm wherever you are -- good time to snuggle with our dogs with some tea or cocoa and a good book!

    • Gold Top Dog

((( Tracy))); I'm sorry the trees in your yard were so badly damaged; it's expensive to replace them and it takes years for new trees to grow to the size of the original ones. I'll be thinking of you this weekend cleaning up your yard. Good thing your house wasn't damaged though and Ruby was okay.

Glenda; Glad your mom is doing well and that you can breathe a little easier.

    • Gold Top Dog

Tracy so, so sorry about all the trees in your yard. What a horrible thing to come home to. As you said, fortunately no damage to the house. Poor Ruby must have wondered what the heck was going on outside, with all of those trees and limbs cracking and breaking off. Well on the positive side, less leaves to have to clean up in the fall of next year. :)  Just trying to throw a little funny in there, after all of the tons of leaves I've been throwing helter skelter. Seriously though, I do feel bad for you and for the trauma poor Ruby must have experienced. Hope you are able to get things cleaned up without too much of a problem.

Glenda so glad to hear that all went well with your Mom. We have snow on the ground as of last night. Where is Spring?
