    Thursday Chat 5/15/14

Hard to find current threads with all the old ones popping up everywhere.

It was cool again this morning and the sun is bright. Awesome weather. :)

Holy crap, the old threads are still popping up.

I'm still not happy with the extreme side effects GingerD had with the Gabapentin. I am going to schedule her for acupuncture - I found a certified vet locally.

Has anyone had a reaction to eating black morel mushrooms, specifically vertigo-type symptoms? I had this happen to me last weekend and last night a friend ate some and is having the same vertigo-type symptoms today. The only thing I found was that some people who drink alcohol and eat the mushrooms could have a reaction, but neither of us were drinking. Very strange.

ETA: looks like I was able to delete the chat post I started at the same time as Jackie, so some features work.

Good luck with GingerD's acupuncture.  Did the vet think adjusting the dosage might help?

That's so odd about the mushrooms Tina.  I don't eat them and will add this to my list of reasons why.

Tina, I used acupuncture with Sinbad for back pain and more, and I am confident it helped. I also used it with Frisby when she was sick and had so much pain--again, it really helped her. (I also used some pain meds at the very end for Sinbad--I can't remember now what it was, but I'll look it up when I get home.) Extra belly rubs for GingerD from me.

I am prone to vertigo and have never had morels, so now I know I won't be trying them. I sure don't want to risk it.

Ronnie arrives on Saturday. Yeah! I'll post pictures ASAP.

I went to a meeting yesterday that I thought I had prepared for (based on the info they sent in advance)--not! But, I think I was able to answer all the questions the group had, so that was good (I hope!).

Today, I'm off to a donors' luncheon at the Food Bank--one of my favorite events. The students in the culinary training program at the Food Bank prepare the lunch, and it was excellent that last time I attended. Yeah!

The pills for dogs are capsules, no way to cut them, and the lowest dose available is 100mg. They only go up from there. At 1.4mg/lb, 100mg is too much for GingerD.

    Bummer.

Kate, I can't wait to see pics of your new addition!

Tina, I don't eat mushrooms of any kind.  DH loves all mushrooms; I'll have to ask him if he's heard of that side effect.  All I can think of is that old Clint Eastwood western where he eats poisoned mushrooms.

I'm sorry to hear that the medication dose can't be lowered for GingerD.  Is it the only type of med that will address her symptoms?  I've heard so many people report success with acupuncture for their dogs (and have had very good luck with it for MYSELF).  Hopefully that will help GingerD.

From yesterday -- belated hellos to Karen and Callie -- good to hear from you both.  I've said it before, but Bugsy has the dream life for a dog.  I've also said this before, but one of these days I'm going to send Ruby to summer camp at Karen's house!

Kate, we're all eagerly awaiting RonnieO's arrival!  Can't wait for the first report (with pics, of course)!

DH heard from his BIL today that our nephew and his wife had to evacuate their offices yesterday (Carlsbad, CA), and they are on watch at home, possibly having to evacuate there, too.  At least they have some advance notice so they can prepare and not just have to run out without having time to pack essentials.  The news footage is so scary.

My CA geography is poor -- does anyone know if the fires are near where Cathy or Joyce live?  Hopefully they're in safe areas.

    • Gold Top Dog

I believe that Cathy and Joyce or more northern than the fires, but I'm not positive where they live...if it IS near the state capital, they should be fine.

    Can't wait to meet RonnieO!

Tina, I'm sorry that GingerD isn't doing well on the meds.

I'm exhausted from DH's 2AM and 6AM "feedings", but the good news is that he is now on just 4 pills per day so doesn't have to set alarms to wake up and take meds!  Doc said the improvement is great.

Glad your Dh is improving Glenda.

Hope the acupuncture works for Ginger!

hope everyone stays safe from the fires.

Bone Dr. says everything is healing, ask him when the pain and numbness and weakness goes away he said July 7th. :)  says it takes 9 weeks for bones to  heal fully, he was counting from March 5 when i broke it.  Thought that was kind of funny.  Must still wear the brace at night and during the day if I'm out or cleaning or working around the house, I ask for a smaller brace, he said okay, went to ge it and they said insurance would not pay for a new one only for the one I  already have. I ask the cost they said 90 dollars, I said no way, she whispered, you can get one at the drugstore, so I did, cost was 25 dollars, no wonder our health care is out of sight.

    • Gold Top Dog

Glad to see everything is moving in the right direction Auburn!  And ugh, I'm not even going to get started on all the things that are just plain wrong re: healthcare, but I am happy that you were able to get smaller brace at a reasonable price.

    • Gold Top Dog

Tina -- the side effects of Gabapentin can be fierce -- that's what the doctors have ME on for the muscle spasms.  Most humans take almost 3 times what I take  and I'm already totally maxxed on the tiny 500 mg dose I take throughout the day.  The pills for humans are 100 mg too.  (slippery danged little things).

    Good luck
