Rhodesian Ridgebacks were developed in South Africa to assist farmers primarily in hunting but also in guarding property. Males stand 25 to 27 inches at the shoulder, and they weigh about 85 pounds. Females stand 24 to 26 inches at the shoulder, and they weigh about 70 pounds. Their short coats with the distinctive ridge of hair running in the opposite direction along their backs come in shades of wheaten from light wheaten to red wheaten. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are powerful dogs, but they are also steady and calm. They are quite loyal to their families, yet aloof towards those that they do not know. They make natural watchdogs.
