Icy Friday Chat

    Icy Friday Chat

It's 25 F here. Yes, I know that's nothing compared to many areas but it's cold for us and we had some rain that turned the bridges icy. We don't drive well in this and the city has closed down the elevated interchanges and overpasses. I'm staying home for now and told the guys to stay home until it warms up a bit. Last night on FB our local animal control facility put our a plea for someone to keep a small dog for a few nights. The dog's owner is a homeless man who went to a shelter but was told his dog wasn't allowed to stay. The dog had snapped at a few people (probably stressed out) and the option was for the man to stay but not the dog. Anyway, many people stepped up to offer the dog a safe place until the weather improves. It made me feel good to know that people were willing to help out this guy and his little dog. I didn't realize this homeless shelter allowed dogs. :) I'm going to take some dog food and blankets by there this weekend. The whole incident restored some of my faith in people.

Dang!  That is cold for your neck of the woods.  Comparatively, makes our -1 not so horrid considering where we are.

I will say, going out to pick up the newspapers at 7AM was not a happy chore.....especially since some dude with a giant pick up had parked right in the center and then pulled a dumpster over to clean out his truck.  I had to walk more and get colder as a result.  I haven;'t even looked to see what the temp is with the windchill.  I don't want to know.  Once you get into the negative numbers, who needs to know?

Off for another funfilled day of work.

Hope everyone stays warm and stay today.

Today is a stay inside day. Although I'm supposed to go to dinner with a friend later. Considering the roads are in a constant state of iciness and the windchill is going to be 30 below again, I may just see if she wouldn't mind rescheduling until tomorrow or sunday.

Last night was happy hour with the co-workers. We went to this place called Joe's Gizzard City. It's infamous in MI. the specialty is gizzards. bleh! The drinks were good though and the trivia was fun - even if we lost it all in the end ;p

I only have to put a couple hours of work in today since I had to go in every day for the last 2 weeks. That just about killed me so I'm looking forward to sleeping in this weekend!!

We are watching GMA here at work. They are doing a makeover for Give Kids The World. I would even know about that place if it were not for Callie and David's good work there. It is an amazing story if you can catch it. Very cold here, 0 is the real temp. Burrrr so very glad it is Friday! Jackie that was a wonderful story this morning. It does seem difficult when all you hear is the bad stuff on the news, so glad they shared some good.

There is a difference between "warm" and "warmer".  The current temp, 18ºF is warmer than the previous day at -18ºF, but it is not really warm.  You actually have to zip up the coat, especially when walking into the wind.  It turns out that our current weather is a throwback to historical norms, for MN.  A few years of warmer than average winters made us soft.  But thanks to the joy of housebreaking a pup, I am experiencing the joys of fresh air more frequently than in previous years.  Uff da.!!

Auggie is coming along.  He now heads for the door when he feels the need and thinks about it.  Of course, he may piddle outside, get his reward, then step in a piddle on your foot, but he is getting better.  He sleeps until about 3AM, gets restless so goes out for about a minute.  The cold air seem to speed him up.

He discovered his reflection in a mirror.  Growling and a fast back up.  Then, he caught his reflection in a window.  Fun to watch.  Apparently an unintended consequence for my acquisition of a pup -our living room carpet, new when we moved in, is now 20 years old.  When Auggie is trained and safe, we get a new carpet.  That will of course lead to new paint, drapes, furniture, maybe new flooring in the hallway, kitchen, and dining room.  Can I figure this in as a dog related expense?

Need to go shopping.  Snow is coming, and we are running out of paper towels.

Hello everyone and happy Friday! Burrrrr still under the big chill here in PA 5 degrees! I don't think I'll be warm until July. I agree its an inside day for sure, I have to run out at lunch and do some errands, busy weekend, huge dog expo on Saturday can't wait then a nice birthday dinner with my step-dad and family. Stay warm and safe everyone!

It's a balmy 3 degrees here with a 14 mph wind out of the southwest.

It was nice to hear the homeless man's dog wouldn't be left out in the cold, Jackie.

Found out yesterday the little horse track I work at during the summer will have a very short meet this year - only 16 days - for the weekends of May and June. Then the thoroughbred people are going to Detroit for the rest of the season. I'm bummed. I've made a lot of friends over the years and the money has helped pay for home repairs. The future is not known, but this may be the end of the road. I'm fortunate enough to have a real job, but others who work there don't.

Tina, that's too bad about the track. I know the extra income has been appreciated by you and I feel bad for everyone affected.

It's still icy here and most elevated roadways are closed.  So many accidents that happened overnight are not cleared and I saw a shot of a wrecked police car.  I don't know why people don't understand that just because the surface roads are not icy, that doesn't follow for the elevated roads. DH left for work a few minutes ago.  He can travel surface roads all the way.  That bummed him out. lol

Rex and Belle think it's great weather.  Gabby says it's a good day to stay inside on the couch. :)   I put some warm water in the bird bath even though the birds can drink out of the unfrozen whiskey barrel.

Wow, the weather is doing crazy things when here in western Oregon, it's warmer than where you are in Texas, Jackie!  Actually, it was very brisk this morning (30's), but the sun is shining and the sky is bright.  I cannot tell you how happy that makes me.  I wore my sunglasses on the drive in!

What a nice story about the people wanting to help the homeless man's dog.  I always worry about the dogs I see with those folks, even when the weather is decent.  I know they probably don't get regular vet care.  But, I'm always amazed at how well-behaved most of those dogs are.  Maybe it has something to do with being so acclimated to sights and sounds of being outside in a city 24/7.

Doug, you summed up the life cycle of a house project perfectly!  All it takes is one change:  new carpet or new paint, and suddenly everything else in the room looks ancient and shabby.  Next thing you know, you're doing a full make-over.  Always reminds me of a Christmas letter my friend got from her aunt and uncle one year, describing a big kitchen remodel they did that year.  The opening line was:  "It all started because we needed a new microwave."  Big Smile

That's too bad about the track, Tina.  Those poor folks who will lose their primary jobs.

Is it time for cocktails???? I am so ready. Monday is D day or rather C day (conversion day), LOL. Have a great weekend all. Rumor has it our Zero temp is turning to 60 on sunday. We get a one day break before the cold is back.
