Thursday Chatting

    Thursday Chatting

Foggy here this morning. Hate driving in heavy fog on rural roads. I guess that's better than driving in a blizzard though. I saw a story about a dog found frozen to the ground yesterday. It was in an outdoor pen with frozen water and no food and inadequate shelter. The owners have been charged with neglect. Hard to imagine what it must be like to be FROZEN to the ground in intense cold. Grrrrr!

Not  a fun idea, but in honesty the body shuts down & you just go to sleep (common thing to warn skiers, hikers, etc. -- don't give in to sleep because you just slip quietly away).   That said -- I'd wish a slightly "hotter"  destination for someone that uncaring.

work calls!!  Hope everyone still has power.

Jackie, I saw that article. Grrr is right.

This past weekend, apparently a fawn had fallen through the ice in a local river and got frozen into it, part of its body and head above the water. Someone called to Central Dispatch to get help. The fawn was freed but died soon after. The rescuers estimated the fawn had been there at least 24 hrs. Crying I'm sure until the body shut down, the fawn was terrified.

Yes, while still conscious, the fear is unimaginable. Poor little deer.  I'm sure there's a lot of pets and wildlife that have died in the intense cold in some areas lately.  Hurts me to imagine that, especially for the domestic animals.

Did anyone see the show on Nature last night about the Lipizzaner stallions and how they're raised and trained?   Fascinating show and the shots of the mares and foals running in the meadows were gorgeous.  I got to see the Lippizaners perform a long time ago when they came to town.  I wonder if I'm too old to run away and join their program?

I have been in love with the Lipizzaners since I was a little kid! I wish I'd known this was on.

When you run away to join their program, Jackie, stop and pick me up first.Smile

Sad to think about the fawn, dog and others in a scary situation like that :(.

Jackie - I did see that special about the Lipizzaner stallions a few month ago and loved it. I was especially touched by how well cared for they are, even in retirement. I'll run away with you and join their program!!

Meeting at my house went fantastic last night. It was such fun to have a bunch of dog-loving women over and they didn't even seem to mind Shane's incessant barking. I did hear some unsettling news though. We've been struggling to find anyone to give us free or super cheap rental space (shocking - right?). Well, apparently the first Shelter Hope Pet Shop has gotten a lot of attention from the Milan Foundation and they might be willing to help us financially.  My friend was going on and on about how great Cesar is and his rough start, etc., etc., and I just had to bite my tongue.

Oh, those stories about the fawn and the dog are heartbreaking!  I know many, many humans suffered during the freezing weather, but I always worry more about the animals since they can't ask for help.

I saw part of that Lipizzaner special last night.  The moments I liked best were when the narrator was describing the attentive care the stallions get each day, including "being whispered to" by the caretakers.  Smile  Also, the closing scene of the very  young black/brown colt exploring the outside with the mother and the handler was so cute -- with his lanky legs, awkwardly hopping to the fence and other things to sniff.  I have zero experience with horses, but I think they're so beautiful.

Cathy, I'm glad your meeting went well.  I hope something falls into place for a nice location.  The Milan Foundation might NOT be the first choice for assistance, but on the other hand, if they have the resources to help your group do the important work you want to do, maybe it would be tolerable.

Jackie I did see that show! I actually got to see them live a few years ago they were performing on tour near my home. It was amazing! I wish I could ride that good.

I forgot to mention that I was doing some reading about Shane's heart condition on the web yesterday and looking to see if there was anything new. I found a couple of links that mentioned a balloon cutting surgery that had shown some promise with SAS. I emailed Shane's cardiologist about it and she said she'd check with UC Davis and see what they know. I'm trying not to get my hopes up but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

Those jerks should be charged with a whole heck of a lot more.  I'm sorry, but I have YET to see a newscast or even hear one on the radio that doesn't mention that it's too cold to leave ANY animals outside, and I've not even been in the worst area.  The fawn breaks my heart too.

I so wish I had known the show about the Lipizzaners was going to be on.  I too saw them, many years ago, and they are breathtaking.

I am FINALLY back to real food and somewhat regular meals as of today.  I have no fondness for the 14 pounds I dropped in 5 days, but that's one heck of a way to do it.  Still, a pair of my sometimes too snug slacks fit just fine today......

Cathy, I hope that procedure holds some hope.  I'm glad your pet shop meeting last night went well.  I'm kind of with Tracy about the possible money from Millan's foundation but on the other hand it would be an endorsement for him in a way and that's not what you want.  No, I talked myself out of it being a good idea.  He could use it to promote himself as someone who helps animals.  I'm good at arguing, especially with myself. :)

Glenda, I agree those jerks should get more than the slap on the wrist they'll probably get.

I didn't know about the Lipizzaner show  in advance or I would have told everyone.  I was looking for something to watch and saw Nature was on.  When I went to see them perform I was mesmerized.  Tracy, I loved that one day old foal out sniffing everything and bouncing around on those long legs.

Interestingly, there was recently a case in NY which was just on the Albany news...as close as we get to local.  There is a new law under consideration that would put people who fail to provide adequate shelter to jail for a year.  As in....to jail where they get a bed and 3 squares??  Maybe that jerk sheriff in AZ has the right idea....tents in the dessert.

I knew when I used the word "colt" to describe that young horse, I was using the wrong word. My fingers hung over the keyboard for several seconds while I tried to figure out what to call it.  Foal . . . that's it!  Like I said, I have zero experience with horses!  Tongue Tied

Cathy, it's hard not to get your hopes up about that new procedure, but it's worth looking into to see if it's a reasonable possibility.  Especially because Shane is young and maybe a good candidate.

Glenda, weight loss is the only positive result of that kind of flu or food poisoning.  Not a fun way to say goodbye to the pounds, but better than gaining some like most of us over the holiday time!

Jackie, I can argue with myself about things like the Milan support, too.  You can say "on the one hand" and "on the other hand" so many times, you have no more hands!  It is hard to justify support from someone you don't agree with -- we had a similar situation when I was on the board of our local shelter where a donation seemed to have strings attached.  The best thing would be to try to find alternative sources of support before resorting to the Milan thing if there are no other options.

If you go to this link, then click on Schedule up in the menu bar and choose location/provider etc - it will give you the times when the Lipizzaner horses will re-air. My area shows it on Sunday morning.

LOL Jackie!!  I've argued the idea with myself ever since I heard it too and I just can't get it to sit right in my brain or heart. I don't think I could tell people where we got funding from without wrinkling my nose. Since none of the plans haven't worked out yet, I'll keep my opinion to myself and you guys :)

Has anyone tried the fuji apple chips? There's no way they're good for you but boy are they yummy and addicting. Speaking of yummy - one of the women that came last night gave each of us a huge bag of almonds from her family farm. I'm going to freeze them before I eat them all.
