A setback in Ruby being un-crated (tacran)

On the NDR daily chat, I've talked about Ruby's new routine being un-crated, but I thought I'd post in a new thread to see what happens.  Like Jackie said the other day, I don't think everyone sees new threads.

It's been a couple weeks since we've started leaving Ruby un-crated during the day.  She's been great, no problems, seeming to stay on the love seat or her bed.  Today our schedule was a bit altered, so she was alone for 5 hours instead of 3-4.  I opened the door, and she greeted me as usual, with her Nylabone in her mouth.  I stepped in and saw stuffing all over the floor.  I said, "Uh-oh, what did you do Ruby?"  I made sure my voice was cheerful as I kept repeating that as I walked around the house assessing the damage.

Funnily enough, after I started saying that and walking around, she started skulking near me, head down, belly low, even going in her crate several times.  She knew she did something inappropriate, even though I wasn't acting or sounding angry.  It was actually kind of funny, because it was 4 stuffed teddy bears that sit on a landing upstairs.  We rarely go up there (it's two tiny bedrooms and a bath), so she never goes up there on her own.

Based on the way small rugs and things were all askew downstairs, it was obvious she had zoomed around, tossing them all over, destuffing one of them, leaving others in random places on her zoom path.  Needless to say, the surviving bears will go behind the closed bedroom doors now!

Oh Ruby, you didn't!!  lol   I'm glad it wasn't stuffing from a piece of furniture.  Poor Ruby she says "how was I to know those weren't stuffies for me?"

Even though you kept your voice cheerful, as you assessed the damage, Ruby clearly read your body language and behavior correctly.  Dogs are so good at that, it's almost scary.

Ruby, be a good girl and don't find anything else to turn into a dog toy that doesn't belong to you.   I can just picture her fun as she got the bears from the landing and played with them.  Wheeeeee!  Stuffies!!

Oh, Ruby, you silly girl. It reminds me of the time my springer spaniel "unstuffed" a pillow--there was that polyfill stuff everywhere. I laughed as my springer tried to hide it by doing a "down" on top of all the fluff and wagging her little stub tail a mile a minute. It does sound like she had a bit of a party with those bears!

Woops! Small set back but things will get better again. At least you know her limit and you can gradually increase it again. My Rottie, Grux reached his limit one day and totally chewed apart his bed, he got into the foam part and just shredded it I still find pieces of it sometimes. Keep us posted.

Just catching up on things around the forum and saw this. I was afraid the story was going to be much worse. Not to say that the bears enjoyed the destuffing but at least it wasn't furniture. I know that Sassy could go many months without destroying anything and then one day would decide her bed looked tasty. I guess the extra time alone might've been too much for Ruby but I also think that they just have days they want to sleep and days they want to hunt and kill. I hope it's all smooth sailing from here.

Kate, that's too funny how your dog tried to "hide" the evidence by lying down on it!

Michele, my husband was in the front hall last night and suddenly called out, "I found another eyeball!"  I knew one torn-out eye was still missing, so now they're all accounted for.  We shouldn't find anything else now.  :-)

Cathy, that's interesting that Sassy would not destroy anything for months and then suddenly decide to tear her bed up.  I guess "Sometimes they feel like a nut, sometimes they don't!"

Not that I was going to put one up anyway this year, but we completely nixed the idea of putting up a tree.  The dangling ornaments would be too tempting.  I'm not even hanging the fuzzy stockings on the mantel this year!
