I caught a portion of the parrot show on PBS the other night, and it was very good. I feel so bad for birds like that who live in a cage. Besides not being able to fly and move like nature intended, they have no social interaction living such solitary lives (unless the have a bird companion, like pairs of parakeets or something). And with the lifespans birds like parrots have, they're bound to outlive their owners, and often have nowhere to go after the owner's death.
Also on the topic of the welfare of animals, I admit that I'm not educated about all the factors involved on both sides of the issue when it comes to wolves. I understand that ranchers get upset when they lose cattle to wolves. But their reaction is due to the loss of "valuable inventory." My instinctual, emotional response is, "Hey, there are plenty more cows where they came from if they need to be replaced. There are NOT plenty more wolves. Cows weren't endangered, wolves were." So, I think they should be continued to be protected as much as possible.
We just found out today that our favorite boarding facility closed. Although we rarely go anywhere overnight together, when we have needed a kennel, this was the ONLY one we'd use. It was small, immaculate, indoor/outdoor runs with heat and A/C, and the owners lived on the same property (as well as being very experienced dog trainers, one of them also was a vet tech). We're so upset. We don't have any vacation plans, but you never know when emergency travel might happen, and we don't know anyone we could trust to stay at the house with Ruby. She's too much dog for the average person. Our experienced dog friends have their own full-time jobs and pets to care for; they can't dog and house sit for us. Sigh.
So glad it's Friday. No plans tonight, but tomorrow we will have dinner at our neighbors' house, and the guy is a truly gourmet cook. I cannot wait!
