I Lost A LIfe Long Friend Today

I got word a little while ago that one of my life long friends had passed today.
Sammy and I grew up together in that little community, started 1st grade
together, graduated together. He was voted most handsome our jr. and sr. years,
was captain of the basketball and baseball teasm (we were to small a school for
football til a few years later.)

We even went to Tyler Junior College together for a year and then I got married by he continued. However, he was drafted in '65. In Viet Nam he took a bullet that remained in his spine and put him in a wheel chair. this was early '67. . I went to see him in the hospital at
Fort Sam Houston in May '67. Bless his heart, he still had hopes of walking tho
his Mom had said he would never walk again. He was having that "phantom pain" in
his feet and legs and was sure feeling was returning.

Well he came home and eventually married and they adopted a baby. He coached Little League baseball and basketball, enter special Olympics, and used his wheels" as legs.
Even tho we lived 400 miles apart now, we were friends on Facebook.

HIs parents were told he would not live to see 27, but he died today and would have
been 69 in Dec. Sammy, you fooled them all didn't you. You are going to be
missed by a lot of people, but at the same time you will be seeing several of
    our classmates who went before.

Sandra, I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your old friend.  What an inspiration he must have been to those who knew him.  I hope it helps his family to know that there are lots of people far and wide, like you, who will always remember him fondly.

I'm fortunate to still be in touch with a couple friends who I met during childhood (even without being on Facebook!).  Even though we live on opposite sides of the country, and we see each other very rarely, if one of them passed away, I would feel like some of the light went out of my life.  Friendships made when we're very young and nurtured during our formative, growing years are some of the most meaningful friendships we have.
