We live in San Antonio.  Our downtown is known for the river that runs through downtown.  The river south of town has long been a rather blighted stretch that floods in heavy rains.  It was not somewhere you wanted to go and mostly inaccessible.  Recently the county and city have worked together to undertake a huge river restoration project.  We now have bike and walking trails and many places have access for kayaks and canoes.

Today was a beautiful day and we took Gabby for an outing on the newly opened stretch just south of downtown.  It's gorgeous and we saw tons of ducks, egrets and turtles out sunning on the rocks.  Gabby was very good despite all the bikes whizzing by, runners thundering past and people walking with their dogs.  We did too. :)

Nice! I love being near the water - it's soothing to me. The wildlife is also exciting to see.

Looks like a great spot Jackie and especially so with all of the wildlife you were able to see. Gabby must have truly enjoyed her walk. Love the photo.

What a great photo!  Sounds like a terrific place to walk (with or without a dog), and I bet you'll spend lots of time there.  I think it's great when communities make public spaces available for walkers, runners, cyclists, especially when it's been an unused area that has such potential.

We're very fortunate to have some nice trails like that in town here.  The town my Mom lives in has great paved trails that were created from old, unused railroad routes that wind through a few towns, along the river in many parts, really scenic.  A few years ago they did a huge effort to re-do them for the public to use.

Some people complain about the cost of projects like these, but I think it's money well spent when it is a public space that lots of people can use and enjoy for exercise, getting closer to nature, etc.
