DOG.com wants to hear from you

Now that the site has been out in the wild in test form for a couple of weeks, I'd like to ask you what's missing as well as tell you what we're planning to do to improve your overall experience of this community.

So please send me a message or post to this thread with what you really want to see on this forum.

In the meantime, here are the planned changes that are under review.

    1) We will be bringing back Non-Dog Related separate to General Chat.

    2) We are making improvements to the design of the forums. You will be able to see what's been posted, most recent posts, total posts (popularity). You'll also be able to see the threads that have been unanswered. It will look like a modern version of the old forum and you should find it both familiar and easy to use.

    3) We are going to make it easier to reply, share and engage with content on the site through each of the grid squares. We will also add dates to all entries on the site so you can see the most recent posts.

    4) We're developing a way that you can do most of the things from the site in one place. This is what I've called a sticky page on previous posts.

    5) We're going to re-design Dogpedia so that it's clearer and doesn't interrupt your conversations on the forums.

    6) we are going to make it easier for you to personalise your experience through MyChannel as  mentioned. MyChannel will give you the content from you and your friends.

    7) Finally, we will be making general improvements to the interface so it is more user friendly and logical.

As soon as the list is agreed, I'll share more detail.

    Jonathan

Jonathan, I'll look at the list more closely later, but upon quick glance it sounds good.  I'm glad entries will be date stamped.  Will they be time stamped, too?  Sometimes I find it helpful to know what time of day someone posted to a thread I've been following.

I'll be eager to see how the "sticky page" works/appears.

Yay for the return of NDR!

Thank you for this update and for responding to our feedback!

No problem @tacran. We can address most of the major issues. I'm determined to help you guys get to a place where you love the new site. It's just going to take a bit of time. Appreciate your patience.

We have amended limits on file sizes. It should be more sensible for you all now.

Maybe work on the login?  I've got remember me on and it still doesn't.  Oh, and maybe eliminate multiple notifications?  As in, I check my email and find I have a zillion or so notifications for the same thread, because I am getting a new one with each and every post..  At one point, we got a notification and didn't receive another until we went back to the thread again.  Not a huge big deal as it doesn't take long to delete the extras, but just a thot.

My frustration primarily comes from the ongoing changes.  Some of us  (raising hand) have issues with change, period, but when it KEEPS changing, that's harder to deal with.  However, I realize that you are in the tweaking process so I can challenge my brain and live with it!  Actually, maybe ya'll are doing me a favor keeping my brain active with this!

I love that you are listening to us and making changes.

I, too, have the login issue. I haven't changed any of the settings on my computer/browser. I used to be able to stay logged in all the time; now I have to log in every time.

One minor suggestion I have: In a post, change the color of the type directly under the username (location, posted date, post count) to grey or light blue. I feel like it gets mixed up with the post content, being the same font, size, and color. It should go more with the username.

    • Gold Top Dog

I hadn't even noticed that Janice.  You're right, it does blend right in.

    • Gold Top Dog

Yes!  Excellent suggestion, Janice!  Of course, your creative, graphic artist's eye would catch that.  I was feeling like the reading of posts wasn't "easy" on my eyes, but I'm not sure I would've been able to pinpoint that being the reason why.  That's the area where I'd love to see the TIME stamp as well as the date.  If it can't be blue like the user name, maybe it could be in a different font or bold or followed by a line/border or something?

Interesting you mention getting a ton of notifications, Glenda.  I see where the default setting below the "REPLY" area (in Rich Text Format) is set to ON for "Email me replies to this post."  However, I've never received an email about any replies to my posts.  I assume my email address is stored somewhere from the old format user info, but maybe not.

In the old forum, I didn't rely on notifications (in fact, I turned them off since sometimes they bogged down my Inbox).  Instead, I relied on the "Posts you have not yet read" so I would know what to read since I last logged in.  It would be nice to have both options so we could choose our preference.

Why do my active topics seem to be very old topics, from 2007 for one? Haven't been on here much since the big changes so not sure if this had already been discussed.

    • Gold Top Dog

It has been discussed . We're working on a fix.

    @glenmar
Oh, and maybe eliminate multiple notifications?  As in, I check my email and find I have a zillion or so notifications for the same thread, because I am getting a new one with each and every post..

Oh Glenda please please NOOOOOOOOOO don't tell them that.  That's the one thing they did right off on the old change-over that just killed me.  Sort your email by subject and only look at the newest one & delete the rest if you don't want to "read" all the notifications.

but for someone like me who does can't stay logged in **all** the time, a quick look at the email list tells me whether I have to log in to reply or if it's not something I need to care about at that minute.

I can't stay logged in to view each post -- and when a thread is super active I can just monitor the email and decide if I have to log back in or not.

I don't know if that could be made a choice or not -- but the resolution to that on the old forum was you had to turn "on" notifications every single solitary time you had read what had notified you ... or you never got another notification telling you something was going on there.

If you don't want all the emails then why not just  say "no" to notifications and just use the "most recent posted" list.  Or you could use the "site digest" email they send now that is just ONE email listing what's been posted that day.  You might prefer that to actually getting email notifications.

If they take notifications away from me again I think I'll just jump off a cliff into the cyber sea or something.  Just because the list of emails is there in your inbox you don't have to read them all unless you want to.  It's easy to delete them en masse

    • Gold Top Dog

is right. I think this is the right way around. In the emails, you can also choose to stop following a particular thread - it's at the bottom. Don't worry though if anything we are looking to do more with notifications so hopefully you'll all get options you can work with eventually!

    • Gold Top Dog

I've gotten used to multiple notifications again, so I withdraw that comment.  I DID say not a big deal since it doesn't take long to delete the extras and I've gotten to where it absolutely isn't a biggie.  I think it was just the shock of going from none to soooo many, but I'm fine with the way it is now.

Would very much like to have certain topics or threads easy to access most recent posts.  Some of the threads were always active such as,

    Rainbow Bridge Welcoming Committee

    Rainbow Bridge Forum

The Spiritual Circle Forum ( I havent found it at all)

NDR I understand you are working on it.

Forum Rules   I cant find any updates since April for forum rules.  Wondering if they have changed any or not.

Definately I miss the "Not Read" selection from the old forum.  This allows me to quickly access threads while on "break"  at work  etc.

    Things I do like alot;

I really like having notifications back although I havent quite figured out how to get all the settings right.

I am anxious to try the pictures as soon as I get a new camera.

Glad you feel that way. @shadowsgin I will tell you and everyone else that we will be bringing back most of the forum features that you miss and we're about to start work on it.
