My DH was lethal with round-up also.  I had to hide it, so he would not destroy something I had just planted and told him I did!  Sigh...

I'd much prefer to pull a weed than spray it but I just can't possibly pull all of these. I can't even figure out where they start and stop. DH is fond of the spray it to death thing too. He says "just spray it and it'll die and blow away". Um, no. The weed dies but then just sticks around looking brown...and dead. Not exactly attractive IMO. My heart does a happy dance every time I pull a weed and the whole root comes up with it. Yeah, I'm weird :)

Allergy shots, while they may help, will take a few years to do so. I've had some success with singulair as well. I've never had any real success with anything OTC, and most prescriptions either. So far I haven't gotten much relief from my shots. In my last testing, 3 out of 4 still showed up, and I had a new one. Apparently, I am highly allergic to dust. They had to put it on a low dose maintenance because I kept reacting to it.

I did the first day of bike camp today chasing the kid on a bike. I refer you to icanshine.org for more info. I'll be whiped out by Friday, but it's great.

I've tried claritin d and allegra.  Claritin d made my heart race and triggered panic attacks.  Allegra put me into a weird state - can't describe it.  I tend to react strangly to a lot of meds.  I've been living off benedryl.  I'm to the point now, that it won't put me in a coma, but I get brain fog and have a hard time concentrating - not good considering at my job I NEED to be able to think quickly sometimes and pay attention to minute details.  I had allergy testing done.  I'm allergic to ragweed, goldenrod, pollens, very allergic to dust and to mold.  The pollens here, dust and mold have been a high to extreme levels the last few weeks - which explains why I've been miserable, but I'm tired of staying doped up on benedryl, just so I can breath, not claw my eyes out, and relieve the sinus pressure I've been getting (which has been leading to terrible headaches and migraines).  Stupid allergies!

For those who might like a natural alternative to Round-Up, try Clove Oil. I can get a 4 ounce bottle of Clove Oil from the health food store for about $12. You can replant pretty quickly after using it vs the Round-Up which recommends not planting anything where it is sprayed for 4 months.

    Clove Oil Based Herbicide

With so much rapid growth in your flower beds, it’s important to be able to spray once in a while to control the undesirable plants to save time and your back!     It’s also convenient to spray around the bases of trees in the yard to simplify seasonal mowing duties.   Perhaps you weren’t aware that clove oil can be used as a strong, yet nontoxic herbicide in your yard.   It is stronger than the vinegar and salt based herbicides that you may have tried in the past.     It is very expensive to buy clove oil based herbicides at the organic nurseries, so be aware that you can make them yourself much less expensively.

To make your clove oil based herbicide at home, mix the following in a one gallon sprayer

8 TBL clove oil (this would equate to one 4 oz bottle)
    1 gallon water
12 drops dishwashing liquid (nontoxic adjuvant which helps clove oil more easily penetrate the leaves)
    Mix gently

Spray this mixture on all undesirable plants early in the morning after the dew dries making sure it will not rain at all that day.    Take care not to spray desirable plants as this mixture will burn any plant’s foliage, not just weeds.  Weeds should begin to wilt and die within 8 hours or less!   I sprayed around my yard on a Saturday morning and many of the weeds were wilted and dead by dinnertime.   Plus, my yard smells fabulous from the lovely clove scent!

Be aware that clove oil will burn your skin if it comes into contact, so it is wise to use gloves and protective goggles if applying on a breezy day.

     Happy weeding!

Amy!! *waving* I love this idea and especially the thought of my yard smelling like cloves. Can you clarify what would be appropriate for the dishwashing liquid?

Hi Cathy *Wave* :) I tend to use the original formula Dawn - I don't like the pre-foamed ones. I don't know how well those would work for this, so I usually just stick with the plain old style dish washing liquid. Any brand would work I would think! The smell is going to be nice - lot better than the Round-Up. You can also mix up just a small spray bottle to use vs a large garden sprayer for small areas.
