My Mom has a new dog!

My Mom has a new dog!

Here's a link to his shelter picture http://www.nhhumane.org/adopt-detail.php?cat_id=1&pet_id=2709

If it doesn't bring you right to his bio, look for the orange and white terrier mix named Keno (none of us like that name).  My mom has been looking for a dog for some time, but just hasn't found one (until today) that fit the bill!  She lost her Shih Tzu a couple years ago (put to sleep at the age of nearly 16 due to kidney failure).

Keno is very much underweight, but otherwise happy, healthy and definitely SPUNKY!  He was recently checked by the shelter's vet, treated for fleas, tested neg for heartworm and no internal parasites either.  He already knows sit and loves to retrieve his toys for you to keep throwing.  We both fell in love with him.  He was likely a stray down in Alabama where he's originally from and transported up here to NH.  My mom is going to crate train him, since they were unsure on his house training.  He has very loose, watery stools right now, but we're thinking stress.  If it persists my mom will have him checked out, sooner rather than later.

He was super confident, well mannered in the car (both in mine and one my mom's trip home to Massachusetts).  He is picky about other dogs, but he'll be an only dog child at her home and I can manage Ari and his interactions when she comes up to visit.  We took him for a nice walk, and he was wagging his tail, smelling all the smells and wasn't startled by the motorcycles, bicyclists, or the truck that came thundering past us.  He's happy go lucky and seemed to settle right into my mom's home, by pouncing on the toys and making her throw them for him repeatedly, according to my mom.

Now, we just need to think of a better name!  For what it's worth, he doesn't really respond to the one he has now, so changing it should not be too much of an issue. Keno has hit the jackpot with my mom.  He'll be well loved and given plenty of attention, toys and outdoor activities!

    Keno - Home Trial!

    2 Years Old • Male • Neutered
    Breed: Mixed Breed
    Size: Small
Waiting for a forever home since July 26th, 2013

This is one spunky dude! Keno is active, playful, and very much a terrier. He is smart, vocal, and would love to keep you on your toes. Do not let his size fool you, this is no lap dog! Overall he is looking for an equally spunky and active owner who can provide him with plenty of playtime. He is not recommended for children below the age of 10, may be picky about his doggy friends, and may chase cats for fun.

What a cutie pie!  Looks like some JRT in there.  I'm sure once your mom sees his personality, a name will just shout out at her, lol.  Best wishes in your new home, puppa!

He is so cute!  His coloring reminds me of the King Charles Cavalier Spaniel (or whatever they're called).  I love the wiry beard and mustache on his muzzle.  I bet he'll keep your Mom on her toes.

I agree that he deserves a more suitable name.  I'm sure his personality will give her some ideas.  I'm glad he found a great home with your Mom!

I am in love!  What a cute dog and he sounds like he'll be so much fun.  :)

LOL -- they already TELL her he's "vocal" LOL -- spunky? Gee, Jackie -- you think he's a terrier?? LOL That "look" -- tipped head -- kinda like "Whatcha WAITIN fur?? Let's GO!!"

Wow !!  What a cute dog !!  I'm glad your Mom found him.

He looks like a "Spanky" or "Scooter" to me. Smile

Oooh I like the name Scooter!  I'm just jealous he RETRIEVES and my retriever has no concept of retrieving lol.  He has THE LOOK down pat.  At the shelter, with those ears and the sad puppy eyes - let's just say, he knows how to work it lol.

I'll be checking in later today with my mom to see how the rest of the weekend went.  He did decide to pee in the house - seemed to be a marking thing since they just came in from a walk.  I told my mom to just treat him like a puppy and pretend he knows nothing about doing his business outdoors and hold a celebration for him when he goes outside.  He seems smart and I think he'll catch on very quickly.  He is food motivated (and considering how underweight he is, it's no wonder!) so that will help.  She's also going to crate train him too.

I'm really happy for the both of them.  I think it's a good match.   I can't wait to see how his personality continues to unfold.  He's already so confident and happy go lucky.  I do think he'll be a handful though lol, in all the best possible ways.

What a cutie! I can't wait for updates and stories. What a lucky dog and what a lucky human!

The mom has said he's settling right in.  Follows her everywhere (usually with a toy in his mouth).  He's very inquisitive and yesterday she caught him jumping up onto the bookcase (it was a small one) lol.  He was just hanging out there.  A "no" was all it took for him to look at her, *** his head and get back down onto the floor.  He then proceeded to bring her a toy, which she praised him for.  I can't wait as he gets more settled in to see what other mischief he concocts and how he uses his charm to get out of it lol. I may have (cough cough) bought him a rope tug toy, since my mom said he likes to play tug.

She really liked the name Scooter, and she's also considering Chester (doesn't know why but Chester came to her mind).   So far no more accidents in the house.  He did well with her being gone all day at work.  I can't wait to see him again this weekend!

His diarrhea seems to be getting better.  Still very soft stools, but not completely watery like it was before.  We're pretty sure he was just stressed at the shelter.  She's feeding him a bland diet right now to settle his stomach.  I might try to get my mom to try clicker training with him.  I think it'd be good for both of them - plus I sense he is a smart dog and she'll need to try to keep a step ahead of him!

He is so cute, and a pretty color too!  I love that he brought your mom a toy when she corrected him; what a charmer!!! Looks like both of them hit the jackpot. Big Smile

Oh he is a SMART little bugger.  She caught him yesterday making off with her basket of clothes pins, she told him to drop it and he did.  As a reward, she played tug with him which he loves.  He must have been owned at some point before being picked up in Alabama as a stray.  I can't wait to see him this Saturday, when she finalizes the adoption.

Apparently, he also loves to get on her bed, and snuggle underneath the blankets.  Yup, he'll be living the good life now!   The shelter said he wasn't a lap dog, but anytime my mom goes to sit in her recliner and he jumps up and snuggles in next to her.  He knows he's got it good now!

She still needs to pick out a name though lol.

Reminds me of Jessie; right after we adopted her she would walk around with one of our shoes and drop it when we said out, then wait for the treat she knew she's get.

What a sweet heart he is!!!! It's wonderful that your mom adopted such a sweet dog!!!!
