    120 degree hot paws!

I just wanted to make another ranting post... My boyfriend and I went to a pet store earlier today to get some food for his lizards, and I stayed in the car, and I saw 2 people , yes TWO, walking their dogs out on the hot asphalt. This may be ok in other places, but right now, in AZ, the part where I am, the temperature has been easily over 120 degrees everyday, and who KNOWS who much hotter that parking lot was! The first guy was an older gentlemen with a very small dog, and he was getting frustrated because the dog kept going toward a little island of dirt and rocks (which was probably still very hot, but not AS), (this was when I noticed), and I told him to pick up that dog, his paws were going to burn off if they weren't already! Man that makes me sooooo mad! Then, I saw someone walk out of the pet store had a pit bull and were just walking out onto the parking lot. That poor dog. And it's so sad because these dogs are forced to keep up with the pace of the slow humans who have SHOES. Animal abuse! Ugh it mad me so mad. I just felt I needed to tell someone who would listen, It's so sad that many people do not think about that kind of thing. Just a last word, don't let your dogs walk on anything that you wouldn't walk barefoot on. >:/

Even in Minnesota the black top is waaaay too hot for bare feet or paws.

What did the man with the small dog do when you advised him to pick his dog up?

Totally agree with being upset over this.

I remember once years ago when we were in CT and we had taken Tonka out in the yard for a potty break (we didn't have a fenced yard, so he was on a leash).  The neighbor was out and we were chatting, and I wandered to the driveway (black asphalt) as we talked.  After a few seconds, I realized Tonka was kind of doing a little jig, lifting his paws up and down.  I said to my neighbor, "Oh no!  His feet are burning!"  So I ran to the grass.

Ever since then, I've been aware of hot pavement (although it rarely gets super hot here in Oregon).  If I lived somewhere like Arizona or someplace with frequent scorching temperatures, I'd probably never walk my dog on pavement!  Or, I'd buy him some special shoes!

Understand totally. Bothers me even around here when I see people doing that. I was in the emergency room the other night...not for me but took an elderly friend in as she was having a hard time breathing and i ended up talking about this very thing with a nurse who was from Arizona. Difference was though, he said people had to put little booties on their dogs to walk them as the sidewalks would burn their feet. Apparantly not everyone does that though.

I, too, worry about some dogs. Zeke doesn't seem to care, but then, I usually walk barefoot most of the time in warm weather, so I avoid the hottest pavement. Definitely, if I don't want to walk on it, Zeke probably doesn't either!

I do have some paw wax stuff that I use in the winter to protect his feet from ice and salt, and it says it helps with heat. I forgot all about it! I think I'll try that on both of us one of these days.

The man picked his dog up... grumpily, I must add. But yes, it made me very mad. I have never in my 18 years seen a dog wear shoes here, but it may be a good idea... hopefully it starts to rain or cool down a bit so it's not so hot..
