    FURminator = Good investment?

    Does anyone have a FURminator? Does it really work as good as it's advertised? The brushes I have do not get deep into the undercoat, and seem like they may scratch the dogs skin or feel uncomfortable to them.... and the FURminator seems to be a pretty good one, but it is kind of expensive... anyone who has one; is it worth the money? Or is it the same as many others?

    I know a lot of people swear by them, but I won't use one because they break the coat.  The same with shedding blades.  I use a Zoom Groom or rubber curry comb and a "greyhound" style comb to get under coat out.

    Awesome! I just bought a zoom groom from amazon... hopefully it works for my 4 babies! I watched some youtube reviews on it, and the only thing I saw was that it works a lot better for shorter-haired dogs, and my dogs are medium-long hair... do you think it would still work? :)

    I don't see why not.  I don't know how it would work on coats like Rough Collies, but if by medium/long you mean something like a Brittany, it should work.  It won't work on feathering, tho (the long hair on the backs of legs and tails).  For that you definitely need something like the comb I mentioned, or a pin brush.

    I have a zoom groom and it doesn't do much for my aussies. It definitely doesn't get the undercoat out. I have also used the furminator and found it worthless. It breaks the top coat. For undercoat I use an undercoat rake, a doggy blow dryer and a comb. The comb probably does the best job of all.

    Yeah the FURinator kond of scares me in appearance; it almost looks like a razor.

    Just got my zoom groom... it sucks, haha. i can see how it might work well for shorter haired dogs, but my long haired dogs, it really did nothing for them.. however, they all really seemed to agree that it felt really good getting scratched with it, haha. :)

    Yep it makes a good back scratcher lol. I forgot to mention that I also have a horse rake which works really well. There's no one tool that does it all for my dogs so I use a variety

     The Zoom Groom does make a really nice scrubber though for when you wash the dogs.

    Oh that's a great idea Jen. I will have to use it for that during the next baths. Thanks for posting that

    Hopefully it works as well for longer haired dogs as it does for short haired ones for that purpose. It works well for Luke, but he doesn't really have as much hair as one might expect.

    The furminator does work on Charlie but his coat is pretty low maintenance.

    Furminator is great! Have to be careful when using it though..... I have a tendency to think I have to press hard and when you can't....it will hurt the dog...especially dogs like Gibby who have short hair and not a lot of it. But its an awesome tool!
