    Ruby's nose knows! (tacran)

We sometimes say that Ruby must have some kind of scent hound in her DNA.  I know all dogs sniff things, but she REALLY sniffs things.  When we're out in the yard, she will immediately start pacing and sniffing, following where squirrels and moles have been (we periodially see those mounds that are the universal sign for mole).

She usually sniffs around the perimeter of the yard.  But once in a while, she'll just be wandering aimlessly, then suddenly stop . . . put her nose flat against the grass or flowerbed, and inhale the longest, loudest sniff you can imagine.  Seriously, if I try, I can't inhale as long as she can -- that's how long one sniff can be.  One of these days she'll inhale a pebble or an insect.  Sometimes she'll do that, then paw at the ground, and lo and behold, digs up a peanut (still in the shell) that the squirrels buried.  She then eats it, of course.

On Sunday, DH bought her a special toy for her upcoming "Gotcha Day."  We keep all but a couple of her toys in the laundry room and take them out one at a time.  He didn't want to leave it on the counter in there, since she'd see it with her other toys.  So, he put it in the lower cupboard instead.  Yesterday she followed me in there when I put something in the washer.  She was right behind me, and all of a sudden I heard:  "Ssssniiiiffffff!" -- a long, deep inhale.  I turn around, and she has her nose pressed hard against that cupboard door where the new toy is.  She has never sniffed that before -- she knew something different was in there!

I got her out of the laundry room ASAP and closed the door.  We'd like to keep the toy as a surprise until next week.  Goofball!

Sniff sniff is the way it goes, cause that nose sure knows. Goofy girl Ruby. You can't have your new toy yet. You have to wait for your special day..

Ruby, dis is bUgsy. It is cwazy dat these humans think dey can hide stuff from us. We KNOW! I mean our noses KNOW!

    Pull-ease!!

LOL Tract B is the same. He spends most of his life sniffing. Even in our early post op phase he sniffs and sniffs and sniffs so a walk in the yard takes 20 or more minutes due to needing to sniff.

In fact at the moment we have to do a full circuit to sniff the 50 holes or so left behind by that 'family' of voles he discovered last week or so. He inhales so deeply I worry he'll get something stuck up his nose!

Ah Ruby I think you and Mr Bugsy would have a wonderful time together LOL

Key word: LOWER.   Now you know, hahaaa.  I can well imagine what she is thinking - must learn how to open lower cupboard!

Tracy -- that was THE best laugh!!

Luna would tell Ruby to beware -- there are certain squirrels who are out to take over the world.  Find ALL those nuts!! STARVE THEM!!!

Lol of course! Dogs must think we are dumb sometimes with all the stuff they can smell. I love watching my dogs work their noses and wish I could smell like they did once in a while.... But only once in a while lol

Sandie -- I'm certain if given enough unsupervised time, she would figure out how to open it!  :-)

Julie, I'm always amazed at how scent seems to be her #1 stimulus (besides food, that is!).  The odd thing is that she doesn't seem to notice (or care) about "new" things on me, other than if I've handled other cats or dogs -- then she'll sniff my clothes for several minutes.  But on the other hand, she never does what our other dog, Tonka, used to do:  if I came home from the hair salon, he would instantly get on his hind legs to smell my hair.  He did the same thing if I had a new lip gloss on or something like that.  Ruby never sniffs anything on me like that.  Interesting what different things they react to.

Silly Ruby! Rupert does the super vacuum-strength sniff under the door when I'm in the bathroom. He has such a nosey nose.

Ruby:  you are obviously being tortured by your humans who buy you toys and then hide them instead of giving them to you.  Please pack your bags immediately for the next flight to NJ where you can come live with me and Jamison and where you both can sniff to your heart's content.  I am the type of Mama who will instantly turn over to you any new toy you can manage to sniff out.  Just sayin' ....

Heck, I wanna live with Deb!

Tracy, Buddy will come show Ruby how to open cupboards. He loves to open the door to the cupboard where the food is and will let it bang shut a few times as a hint to me. The bag of food is secured in another container that he can't open. Smarty pants cat.

Sounds like those special cupboard door "locks" they make for children might have more than one application.  Hmmmmm . . . could be a niche market there!

Let's see, Bugsy is already on his way to Deb's, and Ruby says she wants to go, too.  Deb, I hope you've got nice weather out there, otherwise you better take up all your breakables in the house, because the indoor zoomies and romping could cause some damage!

Actually, I'm surprised DH hasn't given her the new toy yet.  Usually one of us caves in when we buy her something "for later."  But, this was a freakin' expensive toy, so I prefer we not have to buy her another Gotcha Day gift before Tuesday!

I'll take some photos when we give it to her, so you guys can see what all the fuss is about!

LOL Deb!!! I had to hide your post from Shane ;)

Shane loves to sniff too and sometimes he sticks his head into a plant or bush and then gets this glazed over look in his eyes. It's like whatever it is has a drug-like affect on him and it's hard to get his focus for a few seconds.

Shane's gotcha day is one week after Ruby's. It's too bad we couldn't have a joint celebration.

Cathy, we're feeling like the 2 years have flown by since we adopted Ruby.  This is Shane's 1st Gotcha Day, right?  My middle-aged memory is so unreliable, but I didn't think it was 2 years for Shane.

I wish we could do a joint celebration, too.  You and Joyce are the 2 forum members nearest to Oregon . . . . sometime we'll have to think about driving and meeting half-way somewhere.  That would be fun!  Other than Disney, I've not been to CA, and there are lots of places I'd like to visit, so there's always chance we'd make it down there!
