Saturday Chatting

    Saturday Chatting

It's chilly here this morning with gray skies.  The wind is brisk making it feel even colder.  I'm meeting one of my nieces at the farmers market later this morning.  She's never been and I'm looking forward to spending time with one of my favorite people and showing her all the goodies available.

I hope the storm heading for the East coast isn't as bad as predicted.  Stay safe vibes to those in that area.

Texas has a new toll road with a speed limit of 85 mph.  That means many will be going at least ten miles faster than the speed limit. This stretch of new highway is in a very rural area and the first night it was open for travel, there were multiple collisions with wild hogs and deer.  A local auto body shop owner seemed pretty excited about the possibilities for new business. Sad It's bad enough to hit a deer while going that fast but a hog is heavier and lower to the ground and the ensuing damage to car and driver can be pretty severe.  I really don't see the need to go this fast but I'm pretty conservative when it comes to speed while driving.  I prefer to arrive alive even if it means allowing a little extra time and driving at a sane speed.

I saw that on the news about the 85 mph road. That would be great, if it meant people would just go 85, and there weren't animals to run out,  and it was perfectly straight. Too many things have to occur to make that safe. We all know the speed limit is rarely the speed limit. I've definitely never gone 80 in a 65.

I have cookies to bake, but my cookie dough was too cold when I last checked. Maybe it's ready now.

What else... still coughing up lungs and other nastiness. Now I'm thinking I should have gone to the doctor Thursday or Friday, cause if it really gets as bad as they say it will, I might be hacking up crap until Wednesday or Thursday. Last night, the trainer for Luke's flyball class brought in one of her other dogs, just for my friend to meet him. I was gasping from touching him. I'm surprised I'm awake now, because I took two different allergy meds on my way home to try to stop the gasping (and still drove home hacking till I nearly puked).

Well, off to check on my cookie dough.

85 mph wow. Guess I should have read our dot news this week, I hadn't heard that. Most states design their roads to 5 mph over the posted speed limit, that must be in a stretch where a lot of curves aren't necessary and they have lots of space. We have a hard time designing for 75 mph here. There just isn't room for it. Bummer about people hitting animals even if the hogs need thinned out. You don't want to do it at someonels expense. Seriously though, the avg speed here is 78 mph on our freeways. It is safer to post at what 80% of the vehicles drive rather than posting artificially low limits then try to enforce it. My guess is the avg speed on that roadway will prob be around 80.

It is chilly here too but that is to be expected. It got down to freezing last night and won't get much warmer thru the day. Right now I am sitting in the woods listening to the morning birds chirp with the sun shining through. It is so nice and peaceful even if it is a bit chilly.

We were up until 3 am last night then up at 6:30 this morning. Abbie and I searched for 2 hrs last night. She did awesome and found all her missing people. She also found a couple piles of critter poop to roll in though so she is stinking up a storm.

Our camp around halloween is also amusing. They put up makeshift graveyards throughout the woods so we come across them on our searches. Then there are random glow in the dark skeletons hanging from trees and buckets of candy hidden around. Fun stufff. I think i will turn my radio off and take a nap while i wait for dogs to find me

Wow  Julie, that sounds like a pretty cool camp but I don't know how you stay up for so many hours.

I'd heard about that toll road too and thought "no thanks". Way too fast for my taste. DH would be in heaven though.

That storm seems menacing. I hope it's less severe than they're making it sound.

DH just left for work and I need to get showered and then meet DH's dad and others for breakfast. We're meeting at one of those places where they have a breakfast menu that goes on forever. I'm looking forward to having something yummy.

I've only got one thing to say about driving at the speed.  Excessive fuel consumption.  Can't help it....Scots by heritage means natural frugal.

We had an incident not far from here the other night that just breaks my heart.  Two horses escaped from a holding pen and were killed when hit by a pickup truck going just 50 mph.  The truck was totalled, both people in it seriously injured and of course the horses are history.

Today was supposed to be partly sunny, but so far, just gloomy, cold and damp.  So much for clothes outside on the line.  Crud.

Gorgeous day here. I think it's the calm before the storm. Mozey and I are on an off-island adventure. Everything is new to her, and she's doing pretty well with it all. We went for a nice walk in a local park and she did really well there--she didn't turn to try to go back to the car. She's going to see Dr. Katie in a bit for her wellness check up and 3 yr. rabies. I can't believe it's been almost a year since she was caught rescued off the streets by a Good Samaritan! The stores are packed, so we're avoiding them! It's generator test time when we get home. 85 mph just seems nuts. Didn't Montana and/or the Dakotas have that for awhile, too?

The sun came out and that made the farmer's market outing much more pleasant.  It was a lot of fun and we walked off the delicious but fattening croissant breakfast sandwich.  There were a ton of adorable kids and dogs all dressed up for Halloween.  We both fell in love with a four month old Basset hound puppy.  Just too cute. :)  We were walking along the river reach and saw a very young duckling all by itself.  It was obviously searching for mama duck, swimming up and down the river.  I was surprised to see such a young one this time of year.  Finally saw the mama swimming and quacking for her lost baby and they were reunited.  Just this one little singleton was all we saw.  I would have worried the rest of the day if I hadn't seent them find each other.  I'm curious about where the other ducklings were and why mama had such a young duckling this time of year.  Must do some reading to satisfy my curiousity.

I bought a lot of goodies for great meals this week.  There was a new vendor with handmade pasta and I bought some basil/parmesan pesto that will be great with it.  Cremini mushrooms, squash, bell peppers, tomatoes, green beans and scallions.  I should be able to make some healthy and delicious meals with all of that. I stocked up on the spicy mustard one vendor makes.  We are addicted to it and were almost out.  I brought home some tamales for DH so he's not quite as unhappy about not going. :)

I'm glad Mozey enjoyed her outing and did well.  Hope your generator passes the test but that you don't actually need it.

I agree about the high speed limit being nuts and also about it being a huge waste of energy but here in Texas, that seems to be a low priority, unfortunately. Local law enforcement has already said they can't patrol this road as they're stretched too thin already.

Any NJ folks around who can tell me when the state of emergency starts? Deb? I saw there is one declared, but I need to know what if/ I am doing anything tomorrow. Should I take the dogs to flyball practice tomorrow? Should I work?

It's pretty here today - blue sky, slight breeze, mid 60s, although they were talking about the possibility of rain coming in.  I hope it holds off for awhile.  I hate to see Halloween ruined for the few kids that bother going out any more. I'm definitely going to make DS #2 take all leftover candy to work with him on Thursday.

Jackie, I saw that new highway on the news. They also showed groups of wild hogs running across the road.  The newscaster was interviewing someone who said that if you all of a sudden happen across them, it's safer to just plow through them than to try to swerve to avoid them. Hmm Thing is, no matter what the speed limit is set at, there will be a significant number of people doing 15 to 20 mph. more.  That just seems way to fast for me. I'm gonna guess that between the speeders and the animals, there will be a lot of accidents on that particular stretch.

I'm not in NJ but maybe this will help you decide.  Shows the areas being evacuated, etc.

Jackie, I am glad Mama and Baby duck were reunited. I would have worried, too! I scored 3 packages of beef heart at the grocery store. Mozey is ready for a special treat after her vet visit. It went well--she weighs 57 lbs which is right where we want her. (Sinbad's always ready for a treat, so he'll be happy when we get home :-)

Well, it's no hurricane, but it's pretty nasty outside here today.  Lots of wind and heavy rain bursts.  Ruby just came in from a walk, and she doesn't look happy.  She hates being wet.  The little hummingbird that keeps coming to our feeder doesn't seem bothered by it however.  DH's friend just called -- he's at his son's football game.  And the Oregon Ducks are playing right now in Eugene, too.  Not a day for outdoor sports, but such is life as an athlete (or parent or fan of one) in western Oregon.

I heard about that high speed stretch of highway, too.  I would avoid driving on it since I'd only annoy the other drivers by NOT driving 85 miles an hour.  The fear of an accident or hitting an animal would scare me enough --- but I'm with you, Glenda, the waste of gas is ridiculous.

I'm glad the duckling found it's mama; I would've been worried about the poor little thing, too!

I hope you enjoyed your breakfast, Cathy, and I hope Mozey enjoyed her off-island adventure with you, Kate.  Good thing you got all that out of the way before the storm.  I can't believe she's been with you a year already!

Jackie - it sounds like you scored some yummy stuff at the farmer's market. Wish I could come try some of it. I'm super glad the little duckling and mama were reunited.

Breakfast was yummy but you would not have believed the huge portions they serve, A couple of people ordered the biscuit and gravy as their side dish. It came in a shallow bowl that was the size of a dinner plate and the biscuit was floating in gravy. I'd have sworn it was the main course. Wow!! I only ate 1/2 of my omelet and potatoes and now I'm wishing I'd brought the rest home.

I came home and took Shane to our favorite walk place. He'd been shaking his head and digging at one ear the last 2 days. I'd cleaned it with Oti Rinse twice and neither time was there any gunk on the cotton pads, nor does it look red or infected inside. Still, I decided to stop at the vet's office and bought a bottle of Epi Otic. He's been fine since we got home though, so hopefully it's resolving on it's own.

Gorgeous and sunny here this afternoon and it's supposed to 80ish tomorrow - yay!!!

Miss Mozey is just exhausted from her day in the city. She's upstairs on her bed, snooring away!

I hope the Massachusetts governor makes a decision about state employees and work/no work tomorrow evening instead of Monday morning. He's already declared a state of emergency.

I picked up some nice Honey Crisp apples to make a pie tomorrow. That seems like good hurricane food, right??

Absolutely! Honey Crisp apples have been my latest favorite. Yum!!

I love it when Shane is as tired as Mozey is. Hopefully he'll be that way after I take him to the volunteer appreciation picnic tomorrow. I plan to relax about him playing and let him have a good time with the other dogs. Big Smile

One of the big volunteers and my mentor at HB is sitting and waiting while her lab, Tipper, goes through the same surgery Sassy had and for likely the same thing. I'm praying hard that it's not that dire, but I'm not feeling optimistic. Sad
