Upset/Nervous (job related)

    Upset/Nervous (job related)

So, my company has been struggling for a bit now.  We don't have enough business to break even, let alone make a profit.  It's already been approached, an office staff member may be let go or moved to part time.  Most likely, it's going to be me (newest employee and others in the office are crossed trained on my primary role here).  I love my job, but this just blows.

So, I'm considering circulating my resume out there - not that there are really any jobs.  But, I'm not comfortable with this very real possibility to not do something.  Darn adult responsibilities like mortgage payments, college loan repayment, etc *wry grin*.   Am I being too premature to start seeing what else is out there now?  I only ask because a job opened up nearby that is of interest to me, full time, long established company (started in 1984 and many of their employees have been there a VERY long time), really good benefits (including 401K - right now I have no retirement benefits).

I really hate this.  I've had terrible luck since moving to NH.  First company I worked for was financially tanking and it was an awful work environment.  My second job was not good pay for what I was doing, we all got yelled at everyday, it was expected that you work at least 50-60 hours per week EVERY week, etc and the job was uninteresting to me.  Now, this.  However, I'm not keen on working two jobs if my hours here get cut (really don't like working at more than one place if at all possible).  Nor can I afford to be unemployed (could manage it for a short while though).

What harm would it do to get your resume out there?  If you actually get an offer, maybe you could use that as leverage with your current company to come clean about what your situation will be in a month or two.  You can always turn down an offer if your current company decides to keep you on full-time.

I know you must be a wreck over this, because it really is a tough market out there.  So I would get my resume out all over and soon.

    Good Luck !!

I don't think it's ever too early to put your resume out there. You know you're going to lose hours, it's just a question of when. My resume is always out somewhere, even if I am not necessarily looking. One of the organizations I am a part of just let's us keep them up, and they're anonymous, so I just put it there. If someone is interested in me, they send something to get permission to see my contact info. I can reject them if I want. You can always say no to an offer, and if something great comes up, you can at least go to an interview.

I'm sorry you're going through this and can only imagine the stress. I think it would be very wise to start circulating your resume. As already said, if something comes up and you don't want or need to leave, you can always decline. Finding another job is always easier when you're still employed, so start now. Your current employer should understand and so will anyone you apply with. Good luck!

Thanks guys.  I am a wreck.  Plus, it's such a SMALL town it's hard to job search discretely (rather not let word get out just in case that just prompts my current employer to let me go sooner, without something else lined up - then again guess that's why there's unemployment...).

Going to talk tonight with the significant other.  He's the rational, sane, able to keep emotions in check one of the relationship :)

Time to dust off and brush up the resume a tad.   Sad

Yep, I agree with everyone else.  Start looking now!  I'm really sorry you're going through all this job BS.  I hope you get something new that's a better company, with benefits, and a place you can feel some security.  Good luck and try not to stress.  I know, I know.  Easier said than done.

      So true lol!

I saw this coming a few months back, but I was hoping it was the normal lull in business (which is typical).  What isn't right is it isn't picking back up and our phones are so so quiet (not good).

I'll throw my resume into what I am sure is the hundreds they've gotten for this recent job opening.  Least the company has been around for a couple of decades.  I love working for a small business, but it can be so volatile.  Around here, though, it's small businesses, with a token Walmart thrown in.

Definitely apply -- and if you know someone who can hand deliver your resume, do it!

You may get selected for an interview (even a phone one as a first step) so you can learn more about the position and figure out if it is something you really want.

Good luck and let us know!

What everyone else said. And if word does get back and someone approaches you just be honest (with a little bit of humbleness). Say you don't want to leave and that you love your job but you heard hours may be cut and you can't afford it so you are just looking for possibilities "just in case". Your number 1 priority is yourself.

I agree with everyone. I was in this position a few years back except my boss told me I was going to be cut - just didn't know when. I put my resume out there and got a couple of offers, went back to my boss and told him the situation and he assured me everything was going to be fine after all. Been there ever since.

Thanks so much guys.  I feel a bit better today, now that my typical "doom and gloom" anxiety ridden brain has settled some.  I'll be brushing up my resume and while I'm not going to announce I'm searching, if it comes up I'll be honest with my current employer.  My desire is to remain with this company, so fingers crossed I can stay with them.  We may be adding a big client next week which will make us all breath a sigh of relief.  It won't fix the current financial situation but it would be a big step in the right direction.  The phones are still deathly quiet though...

Another vote here for do it! I have a very secure job and I frequently update my resume and apply for other jobs, sometimes jobs I have no intention of accepting, just to make sure my resume is current and my interview skills stay fresh. I've worked on the same team for 10 years and have applied for at least 10 other jobs during that time and I think I've had seven interviews.

Really good news - unless our hours dip down again (we just signed on a big client) our hours will NOT be cut.  However, if they do dip down again, she'd cut our hours to 32 a week (which is fine for me).  So flipping relieved.

However, I am going to keep my resume circulated.  I've never been the type to not have a plan b (or c, d...), so this was just too nerve wracking for me.  My position is being modified which is a GOOD thing, because my role will include stuff I want to learn/do and keep me even more vital and irreplaceable lol.   Besides, my job description is still the one from when I was initially hired and completely not relevant or accurate for what I'm doing now - so it'll be nice to have my job description updated and formalized.

Oh, I'm sure you are so relieved to get a reprieve and I hope business continues to improve.  Good idea though to keep your resume out there, just in case.
