rw-short video of Lily and her cello and general question

I dunno if anyone recalls but Lily took up cello last year in 5th Grade. She decided to stick with it and so this year we're back on the Strings team lol! Anyhow she really has gone from not being to play at ALL to playing some really neat pieces on her own in just the months she is in school and practicing (sometimes very reluctantly) after school.

Here is a very short clip of her doing a simplified version of a classical tune most of us know when we hear if not the title, "Morning". She's practiced this a total of about an hour counting class time. She is getting there...the quicker notes are still a challenge. This is the first bit and then she moves along to the next and then strings those two together etc.

It's all been very eye opening as to how DIFFICULT playing an instrument truly is and how much of your mind and body is involved in it.

I never learned to play ANYTHING...do you play? if so...what?

The link is not working, can you reset it?

I play the organ. I had a Lowry, and also I had a Wurlitzer, 3 keyboards, 26 pedals.   I don't have one just now and miss it as I enjoyed playing.  I only ever played for personal enjoyment, and at gatherings.

I tried acoustic guitar after and did barely OK with that, lol.

I'll try to fix the link in a bit after Lily lets me use the computer lol! Can't grab the link on my phone.

ETA: Okay maybe try now, I think I got it fixed :)

     Go Lily!

I played the trumpet in 6th and 7th grade. I wanted to play drums but my parents wouldn't let me. I also wanted to play guitar but they couldn't afford it or lessons.

I think music is very important. I think I'll start Willa in lessons once she learns to read. She says she wants to play drums.

    Good job!

Does she have a different teacher?  That can be SUCH a big deal for music.

one of my teachers would give me ONE piece -- and I played it until it was perfect.  over and over and OMG - O-V-E-R!!!!!

Another would landslide me with 15 new pieces at once -- It took me months but by the time I got it right I was still at the same level of "sucky" with all of them.

I wanted badly to take French Horn in 3rd grade -- Mom flipped out "You have a perfectly good piano HERE.  You WILL USE THAT!! "

Um -- does it surprise you how much I hated to practice?

Dad hated it -- when he got home from work he wanted it Quiet.

But in college for Teaching Music I had to take the recorder or autoharp (unless I had  a igorhouse to look it upn

Where it got "fun" for m e was understanding or    -- good times.  Thanks MIssle

I tried a few different instruments in school... piano, flute and guitar.  Never got decent at any of them.  My brother however is very musically gifted.  I think that was part of my problem, he was so good it made it very clear how much I sucked.  And of course I didn't like practicing and he did, and he has some just plain old natural talent.

I played recorder beginning in 2nd grade. I was very good. Wanted to transfer that to the flute but because my gender was female, I was not given the chance. My brother, however, was allowed to learn the trombone and given a guitar and lessons he never asked for. He was never very good. Yeah, I have my resentments.

I also could play the organ similar to what Sandie described. My mom had bought it in the late 70s. I could read music, play hand chords that I taught myself, as well as play by ear. After my mom died, I stopped playing - mostly for reasons I can't say here.

    Go Lily!

Nope, same one during both Elementary school years. They only offer String and Band in 5/6th Grade. Then when she moves into Jr Hi and onto HS she'll have whoever leads that group. I didn't know but I guess our "school zone" has a VERY good Strings programme, like they win awards and stuff.

Lily is no virtuoso...she has to WORK at it, but she can sure read music and understand the moods and feelings of pieces, their tempo and how a note sounds when it is right and when it is "off" so she can hang pretty well even if she is merely a profficient sort instead of a "wow look at that kid JAM" sort you know? She enjoys it and we do too, so we are encouraging her to stay with it even into Jr Hi.

I just have no clue even what music reading IS, honestly. I don't "get it" kinda like Algebra. Which Lily is pretty good at understanding. Maybe you need a math mind more than an artistic one? I dunno...

Gina, believe me, I "get" Algebra, but math is not my strength. I'm not anywhere close to creative or left-brained, so I don't understand why I have this hidden artistic side. It may be because of the repetition and memorization, which are my stronger points.

Either way, for whatever reason Lily is excelling, it's a great experience. Proficient is nothing to sneeze at. I'm glad she has such supportive and encouraging parents. YesYes

I honestly find it amazing to almost a miraculous extent that someone can look at those alien characters on a sheet of paper...and "HEAR" something! How do you DO that? It reminds me of the scene from Amadeus....when Salieri is looking over the sheaf of works Wolfie's wife brings him...and he "hears" all the music and is overcome? I wish I could do that. I admire anyone who can.

     Good job Lily!

I have a bachelor's and a master's in music - played professionally (trombone and some trumpet) for years, wrote classical music, and was a school music director for 6 yrs.

LOL. When went to the Cluster Concert last year they gave us some pretty impressive stats on grades of kids that played vs those that didn't...same with test scores. It was truly amazing the difference it made, for whatever reason it happens...it seems to either make them if not smarter, then more dedicated to "getting" things they might not otherwise expend the energy to understand if its not "easy".

    WTG Lily!

I was in choir in school but never played anything but chopsticks on the piano.   I always wanted to play but I also loved dance.  I chose dance and gymanastics over piano.

My brother took up Trumpet for a few years and drove the whole family nuts, lol.  He decided it wasnt for him.

I love music, I would definately encourage anyone to try it.

Having had 2 kids participate in band throughout Jr and Sr High, I found the band kids to be very high caliber and less likely to be troublemakers.  They developed a very special camraderie (( know that is spelled wrong) that is seldom found in other groups.  They had to work hard to be there and stay there.  We didn't have an orchestra here, but I'm sure it's the same.  Football season was fun, but concert season gave them a wonderful sense of accomplishment!
