Technology messes with my brain sometimes...

Today I got a call on my landline asking for help finding my son's ex, whom I haven't seen or heard of in 10 yrs.  Caller ID said "caller unknown" but it was my area code, so I answered.  Then the caller said she was calling from Texas.  How the heck do they do that???

Spoofing a phone number is apparently not too hard. Not sure if it's legal.

Not recommending you try it. It seems like something an unethical collection company might use.

Someone did a skip trace on her.  TONS of companies will do that for cheap (particularly if tfhey have ANYTHING like a license plate or address she used to live at, or heaven forbid her Social.)

They can trace via drivers license, and anywhere you lived, and old debt, judgments, etc. and find all the people she lived with in the past 30 years or so.  Then you zero in on each family/address and see if anyone still knows where she is NOW.

Tell them NOTHING.  "No one by that name lives here.  Goodbye".

I get calls like that looking for my ex-husband's son (who is on the lovely sexual offender list? rah.  *sigh*) and my ex -- and both of them are indigent slobs.  (not casting bad stuff on your son's ex, but in my case they are both slobs and worse)

don't buy into it -- and if they have called you once they will call again and again -- so just tell them "no one by that name lives here, goodbye."

"I don't know nothing about it, I wasn't anywhere near at the time."

    BYE

Be hard hearted -- don't buy it!!

Technology messes with my brain all the time. Sad I suppose it's possible for someone to be in Texas and be using a cell phone with an area code from another state. I get a lot of calls just listing a city and state where I absolutely know nobody so I don't answer.  I figure if it's someone who really wants to talk to me, they'll leave a message ... and they never do. There's an election coming up folks, and the political phone calls are coming in by the drove. Comcast Cable (if you're bundled) puts the caller ID up on the TV screen.  I love that!
