To give you a ray of hope, Gin....I had a new heat pump installed about 1 1/2 yrs ago...we had triple digits last month too.  Just got my electric bill for that period...$179.  I did a big happy dance for days!  Should have done that 10 yrs ago!  Our bills before had been over $300.  The new roof may have helped a bit as well...

Has anyone else been watching shark week? It's pretty fun tv programing. Last night there was this Irishman as the lead person in the show. He was going to feed sharks on a dive trip and he was hilarious. He said "These are large meat eating predators. And I'm large meat! This is nuts" ;p  Anyway, he ended up feeding sharks like the ones we were swimming with and feeding on our dives - nurse sharks. They pretty much won't hurt a fly. Well, maybe  a fly, but not humans. Regardless, there's no telling when a big white tip, great white, bull shark or tiger shark will swim up to take a look you know? Watching all these programs makes me question our sanity for swimming with the sharks in Belize.

That was Craig Ferguson, and he's actually Scottish. He's the host of the Late Late Show on CBS. I love him, but I can't stay up that late.

So many people were asleep today, which I blame on the crummy weather. One of the people who Luke used to see passed away about two weeks ago. I'm not surprised, because her husband died a few months ago, and since then she had been so depressed. We didn't stay too long today because we tried to race out before it got really nasty out.

This is from the Florida Museum of Natural History about nurse sharks. Yikes!  Remind me not to go swimming with the sharks that have gotten used to being fed by divers and ecotourism outfits.

    "Danger to Humans

Mainly non-aggressive, generally will swim away when approached. However, some unprovoked attacks on swimmers and divers have been reported. If disturbed it may bite with a powerful vice-like grip capable of inflicting serious injury. In some instances, jaws release was accomplished only after using surgical instruments. The frequency of bites has increased recently as a result of ecotourism feeding operations."

Lol Jackie. Point taken ;) they looked and acted pretty non aggressive....well except for that one dive when we had 4 people spearing the invasive fish. Those sharks got fairly aggressive.

Yeah, the guy was from the late late show. I swear he said he was irish, but either way, he was funny!

It's really hazy outside this morning.  We're getting the smoke from two fires - one in Clear Lake and one on some island in the delta in Solano County.  They messed up the air quality in Sacramento last evening to the point where the newscasters were telling people to keep  the windows closed and  the AC running all night. Hopefully they'll be out soon or maybe the wind will blow the smoke in a different direction.

Max is spending most of his time sacked out in front of a fan somewhere.  Smart dog.

    VERY!

OK just flying through - it would appear that apparently its a toe issue for Bugsy LOL
seems he likely broke a toe in the past or something and now has a crooked joint without cartilage. No signs of arthritis

Dr couldn't find any shoulder, elbow, wrist, or neck pain
The reason the limp is excessive is because the lower down the leg the more lameness it causes, shrugs
Not much we can do - walk on grass, swim
Rimadyl didn't help and often nothing helps with toe pain

Hoping its the cause of his quasi modo gait, seems hard to imagine that a dog that didn't limp this much after the TPLO would limp this much from a sore toe. But hey I am no expert

Twister's check up went good.  Especially since our appointment was actually tomorrow. Embarrassed  They were very nice about it and I really appreciated them working me in while I was there since it's a very very long drive to this location.   We go back in two weeks for another ultrasound.  For now he's staying on the Piroxicam alone without adding a chemo drug.  Really today was just an evaluation on how he's peeing, eating, etc.  I could have called it in but I don't mind paying the fee, it's the drive that I hate.  I talked with her about some other things too and that went well. :)

When we were leaving I had a choice to walk past a chow who was lifting his lip at Twister.  Twister probably gave him the stink eye first. lol  So I chose to walk past a lady holding a little tiny chihuahua.  OMG!  That dog almost launched himself out of her arms and was barking and having a fit.  Twister and I hurried past and Twister looked over his shoulder at the dog with a look that said "what's your problem?".

ETA   Karen, I'm glad it's a toe and not something spinal, etc. I hope it heals soon.  Rots of ruck keeping him from aggravating it.  Maybe you could wrap the whole foot in vet wrap when you take him running.

Well, I'd say we have good news on both Bugsy and Twister. I know having an ouchy toe can't be fun but it could have been so many things that would be more worrisome. Glad to know that Twister checked out fine and that they got you in a day early. Next week's appt will be a biggie, so I'll start thinking good thoughts now.

I went to Big Lots just to get out of the office. Didn't buy much but I did find a nice doggie treat bag for only $2. I tend to forget the one I have at home when I bring Shane to the office and it's a lifesaver for carrying treats, poop bags and the keys to my office. I also bought some chili flavored fritos - yum!! Big Smile

Sounds like some really hopeful news for Bugsy and Twister--yeah!

    Gotta run--back later this evening.

No co-worker baby yet. Mom's water broke at 4:00a, contractions are 5 minutes apart but not progressing. First baby, so I'm not surprised. Glad it's not me.

     Great news Jackie!

yes I had considered that many other not so good things were going on with the Beast - I will have to keep convincing myself that this is really a toe thing. It truly seems excessive but hey I'm not an orthopedic veterinary surgeon Embarrassed

Come on co-worker baby - join us on this lovely planet :)

I am off to kayak for a bit to release some stress - it doesn't appear that it will storm..........fingers crossed

Karen, my English springer spaniel broke a toe once--at first the vet didn't find it at first. X-rays showed it and she had to wear some sort of hard plastic splint thing for several weeks. That did not slow her down, though I had to keep her off the bed for those weeks. (We did have to get a replacement split after the first week--to a much sturdier kind.) Do they think Bugsy's break is recent and will heal or will he just live with it now?

Julie, I'm glad you got an appt quickly for your ears. I hope they can drain and heal quickly once they get the tubes in.

    Cathy--chili fritos=yum!!

Joyce, Max is a smart dog! Have they been able to contain the fires at all?

    • Gold Top Dog

I don't think they've gotten containment on any of the fires and it's looked very hazy all day. If you're inside, you might think it was coolish out but it's hotter than he%%!! The city sent some strike teams out yesterday and I know DH was glad he was off and didn't have to go. If the fires grow though, they'll be sending more.

Karen - I keep forgetting to mention but I'd planted 2 small pots with the seeds you sent me. One pot never did anything but the other pot has several green, leafy babies. I'm babying them along through this heat and hoping they survive.

Jackie, I chuckled about the appt being tomorrow lol. I am glad they worked you in! Happy to hear about twister doing well too.

Karen, it is too bad about b's toe but man it could have been so much worse. I don't mean to downplay it though. A hurt foot on a dog of his size has to put a damper on both your spirits. What did the doc say should be done?

You all need to remind me to never adopt a small dog. Small dog syndrome drives me nuts. My dogs look like angels in comparison. They are so mellow in the house. right now all 3 of them are chilled out laying on the bed with me. The small dog? Running up and down the hallway, barking its fool head off every 5 seconds. Who ever said to ignore behavior you don't want obviously never had a spazoid barking maniac for a pet. God help me get through to sunday and thank god I am half deaf. I am half tempted to drive 3 hrs to drop this dog off at my brothers campground.

Julie, I can relate re: the small dog thing.  My BFF brings her little JRT when she comes and I swear that dog dashes from one spot to the next barking the entire time. She just leaps from chair to chair and lap to lap.  I don't think I've ever been around an animal that hyper and keyed up.  The smallest dog I've had topped out at around 25/30 lbs. and even though he did his share of barking, he was basically pretty mellow and laid back most of the time.

I don't think any of the fires are contained yet and I really feel sorry for people with asthma or other respiratory problems. What would really help is a good hard rain, but in a desert state rain in August is highly unlikely. Hopefully it's in the cards for fall and/or winter or we'll be in a world of mess.
