New and I have a seven week old rescue puppy

Hi, My name is Donna. Our new puppy is seven weeks old. Beagle/mix. We named her Willow. Willow was abused and abandoned. We got her this past Tuesday 8/7/2012 from a lady who helps find fur babies homes. All of this is very new to me-as far as having a puppy that was abused and left alone. So I'm just kind of feeling my way around on how to do the right things with her. She stayed in hiding for about a day and a half. She's trying but she is scared of everyone. Any advice would be greatly welcomed. Were just leaving her alone, unless she wants to come to us. I hope that's the right way to begin. Donna

Welcome Donna, thanks for rescueing such an adorable puppy.  With us our puppy, Rocky, was found in the snow at age 4 or 5 weeks.  I dont think he was ever affected by it. He was in a wonderful foster home and then we got him.   We rescued Hot Shot from an abusive home at the age of three and that was very different.  We had to be quieter, calmer, (I am married to mr loud,,,ha,,,)  we took everything slow, didnt force anything on him.  It took a little more than a year for him to become comfortable.  He is still scared of loud noise, thunder, gun shots (we live in the country)  He is however the sweetest most loveable and cuddly 125 lb dog.  We had to adjust our training methods for him but have never regreted one moment of giving him a safe loving home.  He was never aggressive just nervous but now...he is just a big happy bundle of furr.

Hi Deb, Thank you for the welcome. Can you give me any tips on what Beagles are like? Their personalities? Anything would be helpful. Would it be OK to add you as a friend?

Thank you for the welcome :-). Rocky & Hot Shot are beautiful babies! Thanks for sharing a little about them. It make me realize I just have to take this really slow with Willow. It felt so good knowing we were in some small way saving a precious fur baby. Sadly I found out from the rescuer we got her from. That the people before her shot & killed Willows Mom and Dad. All because they could not find homes for them. It just made me cry! There are so many places they could have taken them to. At least they would have had a better chance then what they gave them! The rescue lady that we got Willow from-only had her & her two brothers for about three days before we found her. So there is still so much that is sketchy as too what Willow really went through. But we love her so much already. I don't care how long it takes to make her feel loved and safe. It will all be worth it-just to make her happy :-). So sorry for the post almost turning in a letter. It's just nice to have found such a wonderful community of animal lovers.

Hi, welcome, I just posted in your other thread, lol.

    Well  . . . . . . let's just say my beagle is a little "special" LOL.

Jamison hardly ever howls or barks like a lot of beagles do.  He's a real couch potato and has been known to lay down for a nap in the middle of walk.  Beagles are very stubborn and if they don't want to do something, they don't do it.  He's very food motivated though, so if I throw him treat he will generally do what I ask.  He loves being around other people and dogs, so very sociable.  You have to be careful when walking them though as they are scent hounds will go after anything that smells "good" to them.  I think Jamison would run right into traffic to get at a dead squirrel if I let him.  He can be a little protective of me and follows me around the house, but he is very lovable and is a great snuggler.  All in all, he's just a very laid back dog.

Jamison is the first dog I ever owned, and the people on this forum helped me raise him Yes.  They answered every single stupid question I had and have a wealth of experience and knowledge, so don't be afraid to reach out if you're unsure of something. Of course you can add me as a friend.  Do you know how to post pictures  . . . I'd love to see your pup!!

Hi Deb, Jamison sounds like a wonderful companion. He's such a handsome fella too! I am learning that Willow is also very food motivated lol. I went to Animal Planet website and typed in Beagle. It had a wonderful 4 minute video of what to expect from your Beagle. I got tickled reading about how Jamison would run any where-even for a dead squirrel! Let's see, with me being stubborn and Willow being stubborn it looks like a contest :-). Some how I think she will win more lol. It's encouraging to read how supportive the forums are. Because I am new to being a rescue Mommy and having a Beagle. I have been raising Chihuahua's for elevn yrs now. And they have a personality all their own :-). We have 3 Chihuahua's. Momma is Chelsey Marie. Chelsey is a beautiful long haired Chihuahua. She had a boy and a girl close to a yr. and a half ago. We kept both :-). Chloe Paige came first and then Chase Alabama came next-not even a minute apart!. They all have completely different personalities. And I love them all :-). So Willow has a brother and 2 sisters to play with all day. I have no clue as how to post pictures yet. I'm a little lost in that area. Any help would be appreciated :-). I did post a few pictures of Willow on the blog I have here. It's called "Welcome To Willow's Life."

There's probably a bit of a fear period going on right now on top of things. Do some reading on puppy development and fear periods

Hi everyone! I just wanted to give an up date on Willow and ask a question. Well, it's been 9 days now since Willow entered our lives. She's doing terrific! She's finally letting us pet her! She even comes to me to be petted! Our daughter Brittany gave her-her 1st bath yesterday and she loved it! I have her on a feeding schedule right along with my 3 precious Chihuahua's, They are all getting along great. I'm on my 2nd day of de-worming her. No worms! All thought I do have a question that i hope someone here can answer. It's a bit embarrassing though. But our female Chihuahua Chelsey is humping Willow?? OMG that was embarrassing to say lol! Is this normal??? I fuss at Chelsey every time I see her doing this. Willow just kind of sits there and doesn't know what to do :( . I have been reading a bit and have not come across that issue. Willow is also going on the puppy pad 95% of the time!! I always give her a treat or two and praise her softly. She goes back to the vets in about 10 days. Once she gets her 2nd round of shots and her 2nd parvo I am going to take everyone's advice on here and let her out in our fenced in area, along with the other babies. We've been letting our babies go out there for the last 10 yrs. And y'all are right....she has a very slim chance at catching anything. I am just so excited that she is finally trusting us and feels safe enough to where she's letting us love on her. it's a wonderful feeling :-).
