Vivian, it's funny you suggested taking the samples outside. I couldn't believe the difference in how the colors looked in our house compared to in the store, so I can imagine it would be altogether different outside, too! The store had artificial, flourescent light, few windows. In the house, we have regular light bulbs (not flourescent) and lots of windows.
The samples look different depending on where we put them -- what lamps are nearby, how close to windows they are, etc. They also change as the light moves and changes in a room over the course of a day As you said, different tints of color start to be more apparent. One color we liked in the store had a weird orange-y tint in our house.
We thought about doing hardwood, since we've got in the kitchen already, and it's open to the great room and dining area. But, the way Ruby does zoomies, she'd be like a deer on ice. Also, with our open floor plan and vaulted ceilings, there's already a problem with "echo" and sound traveling, so we decided to do carpet again to help reduce that. The colors we're considering have that flecked/speckled appearance you described, Cathy, so that will help. Bottom line: our current carpet is a VERY light grey, so anything will be an improvement!
