Hello!

    Hello!

Just wanted to introduce myself and the pup :)

I'm Danielle and the pup is Loki.  My partner and I rescued Loki from a local SPCA when he was about 3 1/2 months old.  He had puppy strangles as a pup and some of the scarring is still visible but he's bounced back!

He's FULL of non-stop energy and provides endless amusement (and sometimes frustration).

Loki is now about 8 months old and about to finish beginner obedience training.  He's super smart but we're still working on issues with his mouthing when he gets excited.

We ended up on dog.com because we were searching for solutions to his mouthy behavior.  He's super sweet about 90% of the time but he gets so wound up and nips my arms pretty hard.  We've tried just about everything but if anyone has some (humane) suggestions, we'll try those too!

When he starts mouthing, immediately get up and walk away or turn your back on him.  on't even speak, just completely ignore him.  If you can do this consistently, pretty soon he'll get the message that mouthing doesn't work.

Thanks for the advice glenmar :) Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to be getting the picture.  We've been very good about doing this over the past 4 1/2 months and he continues to mouth.  We go so far as to hop the baby gate or go in another room if he follows us and continues jumping and/or mouthing.  I think a lot of it is overexcitement as he's gotten better about it but seems like he just can't help himself sometimes and gets all wound up.

I've been working on training a sort of default move for him...when he gets on the couch, he lays down...when he runs up to me, he sits.  Only if he does his default move do I pay attention to him, pet him, give him a treat, etc.  This has helped tremendously as it seems like he goes on autopilot and just plunks down and keeps his chompers to himself but it's not 100%.

If what you are doing is starting to work, keep doing it.  I wouldn't jump a baby gate, but actually put a closed door between you and him,  The best way to teach a dog is to tell him NOT what you don't want him to do, but what you do want him to do, so teaching a default behavior is good.
