General Charlie update (Callie

    General Charlie update (Callie

I'm putting this here cos it's a little health, a little behavior and generally just an update.

He had a vet check up this morning on his eyes -- generally the vet is very pleased.  Another step weaning down the pred eyedrops (just once a day), stopping the pressure drops (who knew but a LOT of what they do with cataracts is to prevent glaucoma - big learning curve for me).  He still has to get the salt ointment (there's still some edema/swelling in the eye because that one eye was SO traumatized by the surgery) but likely will be on that for many months more.

I readily admit I was a total dumbell about all of this.  His body literally had to learn to 'see' all over again -- the last 2 weeks we have been giggling because he had such a MARKED preference for red, hot pink, or neon orange toys.  We didn't do anything hugely scientific -- but he was going out of his way to FIND really brightly colored toys.  He is compelled, when you are going thru the house with him, to drop toys at your feet, zoom to find another one and drop it ... and repeat.

David laughed Sunday "Just between the bedroom and the kitchen Charlie has brought me FOUR toys ... and they were all either red or orange!!"

Apparently when he had the cataracts the black & white and brown/monochromatic/dark toys and he really only saw "shadows" he chose those largely because he could more easily see the contrast of dark/light maybe?

The last day or so I'm seeing him play with the favorites again -- sort of once again embracing "toy" for TOYZ SAKE. LOL The one thing that has remained constant since we picked him up at the end of October was this dog's incredible LOVE for toys.  You bring them to folks, you toss them in the air, you play games with them under your own feets, you try to get Luna 'n Tink to play wif em ... and going to find MORE toyz is always a good thing!!

But ... hmmm ... whoever the heck this DEbbie chik is -- please tell her to GO AWAY!!!!  If she's the one bringing rain we GOTS ENUF!!

Bless him -- he isn't just freaked by thunder & lightning (in fact I've had other dogs FAR FAR more storm phobic).

But Charlie?  He literally will plaster himself against which ever one of us he can find when he hears rain on the roof!!  Sorry -- water coming form the sky is just NO good.  Baths?  They're ok.  Lakes?  No problemo.

But the sound of rain?  Bad juju -- And it's a difficult one to desensitize because he senses the rain long before we do -- He smells it I think and he may feel the electrical change in the air -- it's so danged humid right now it's impossible to tell.

I'm going to try to find some rain and storm sounds and see if I can play it for him -- but his anxiety increases BEFORE you can hear it.  But it's hearing it that truly ramps him up.

But it honestly may be a good thing about "Debbie" -- because it has rained for SO long now and he sees it dry off outside and it's no biggie.  It just rains again 10 minutes later.

    Any suggestions welcome.

He's doing very well -- his "joie de vivre" -- sheer joy of life -- is wonderful.  Lots of folks have asked me "how's Charlie" so I thot I'd just do a general update.

I suspect he's being tutored by Luna in readin 'n typin ... she's certainly been into "stuff" enough in the past week.  I'd like to at least pretend there was some method behind that no-where-near-full-moon-madness going on if we're out.

Callie, I'm so glad you posted this thorough update on Charlie!  There's a black and white Cocker who lives on our block, and when I see him I think of Charlie and wonder how he is.

I was hoping his recovery was going well, and I wondered if you'd noticed any change in his behaviors due to improved vision.  From your post, it's obvious that he is one very happy little guy!  It's cool that it seems he's drawn to the bright colored toys.  Not too many people can say they know their dogs' favorite color!  Smile

Boy, the rain thing . . . I hadn't even thought of that, but it makes total sense, given the scary experiences in his past.  Poor sweetheart.  As you said, maybe this rain experience is giving him some time to de-sensitize a bit.  Also, seeing that the people and the dogs in his home aren't stressing over it might help him feel a bit calmer.

Give his curly, floppy ears some rubs from me, and a kiss on the nose, too!

    LOL on the color.

David gets the credit for this one -- I noticed "color" but David narrowed it down.  Since I'm telling funny stories -- we went to see a 'concert' at Universal a couple of weeks ago -- and just prior David and I had discussed the red/orange/new toy thing.  At the concert, David nudged me and said "there's a lady over there -- Charlie would likely be .... um .... interested!"

Large lady (built like me but almost 6' tall) with a floor-length NEON orange/hot pink dress, with an orange boa in her hair and a matching orange/pink purse & shoes.

I looked at him and said "hmm -- probably a good thng he's not here -- he'd probably want to bring her home!"

Next story -- and I'm sorry I forgot to tell this with the above.

Last time David took him to his appt, there was a memo laying on the reception desk -- At first David thot it was an advertisement for the parks -- but no -- it was an appointment sheet.  And on their list for the day were three penguins from Sea World and a bird from the Audubon Predatory Bird center (didn't say if it was an eagle or owl or osprey -- but there is a huge predatory bird "hospital" and recovery center near us).

But we both thot that was just very cool that this place handles not just your averagle dog/cat stuff -- but  big wild critters like that.

My sweet little "purebred" ("I've got the papers!!" LOL) Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who looks SO like a cocker spaniel LOL (but again we celebrate -- the heart remains good thus far-- we will TAKE it!! RAH!)

Whohoo for Charlie!  Whohoo for the whole family!  You and David can add this experience to you "Health" care list :)

I'm so glad he's doing well Callie. I think you might have the perfect solution with finding a CD with the rain sounds on it and working on desensitizing that way. You live in the wrong state for a dog who is afraid of rain. You should move here Wink

Great to hear from you Callie, and glad Charlie is doing so well.  We've been wondering how you all were doing.

What a happy update!  I am so glad to read all this wonderful news, and hear how happy Charlie is.  And glad he is now amusing both of you, lol!  HOORAY!!!!

     Yeah Charlie! Yes

David should post this himself -- he is **convinced** that we have Debby to THANK, not hate.

The last two evenings, Charlie and his Angels (boy is THAT a reach  Confused) have been keeping company with Dad & his cigar-box guitar in the late evenings, not in the living room with Mom.  (that means on the waterbed in various stages of "I'm comfortable here";)

Particularly Tuesday night there was FIERCE rain on the roof, as there was also Monday.  But David said by Tuesday evening Charlie ws completely relaxed during the rain!!

THIS, folks, is huge.  I knew he wasn't seeking me out plastered against me, but I figgered since he was in with David he was ... but nope.  Just "chillin".

The fact that the rain has been unrelenting and yet His World hasn't washed away (with water up to the 2d floor you'd been in trouble in my 1 story flat-roofed house!!) seems to have desensitized his fears significantly.

But David saw the thread and wanted to add that he truly thinks this non-ceasing storm has actually been good for him.

Sometimes time heals a lot if we are patient.  We still have a ways to go, but both David and I are tickled that just a calm, secure home that is **stable** has done much to heal this boy.  As is typical, his "world" changed during his recovery from his eye surgery.  It was a longer haul than we anticipated (it still grieves me that it was so difficult for him) but I suspect that, too, has contributed to his sense of "it's safe here".

Luna and Tink truly rocked thru all of this -- they both went out of their way not to be rough.  In fact, it was pretty funny (and I've never seen this before and surely NOTHING I asked for) -- both of them respected the "boundary" of the cone.  Luna WANTED to sniff his eyes so much -- but she kept her nose respectfully at the distance of the edge of the cone!  Sniff all over the outside and at his neck, but NOT "inside" at all.

Tink, on the other paw, just plain gave him a great deal of distance.  I'm not sure what she thot would happen if she bumped it, but she surely didn't want to find out.  Not afraid of it -- if he laid down next to her that was great.  Still don't know if she just didn't want to get smacked with it (that's my theory) or what.

As soon as the cone came off we were right back to snuggling with Charlie like "normal".  His butt is apparently comfy -- somebuddy's chin is on it (or Tink is sitting on it) most of the time.

    Charlie and his Angels

     I love it!

I am betting that the "Angels" have told Charlie ... if you are quiet we kin relax and listen to some music in mom and dad's bed and it will be safe and you wont hear the rain no more. :)

This is exactly what happen when it storms at my house.  I am the best thing ever until it storms and then both boys want to be right where Dad is.  Somehow they just know he will protect them, even though I do talk to them and tell them it will all be ok, they still want to be where he is.

I'm so glad Charlie is doing well! How exciting for him to be able to see all his TOYZ again.
