Mindless Thursday

Woah, poor gracie and the anal gland :( and people actually use flexi leads with choke collars? Wow. How incredibly stupid. With abbie being leash reactive, I always tell anyone in the waiting room that she is not dog friendly. Once they hear that they keep their dogs on a tight leash and far away from us :) nobody wants their own dogs face bitten off even if i know it wont happen lol

Lisa, what an idiot person you had to deal with on the phone. Hopefully she was just having a blond moment and it is not normal because man, these are peoples lives she could be screwing up. Good luck tomorrow!

Re the washer, i have done bleach and vinegar, separately of course. I might try thay washer magic stuff. Other than that it is take it apart or just get a new one. I have been wanting a new one anyway. It just takes me forever to decide to bite the bullet on stuff like this.

I rode my bike to work and didn't bother drying my hair this morning because it was so hot and humid I figured it would be soaked by the time I got there anyway. (I keep a blow dryer at work). Anyway, i forgot I had a mtg right at 8 and was running late! So, I ran into my meeting looking like a drowned rat and sweating buckets. That was so completely ridiculously unprofessional. Thank god it was only 2 people from my office. Everyone else was in the mtg by phone conference. After, I got cleaned up and presentable. What a way to start the day. Then I ended it by riding home in the rain.

Congrats Jen!! That's very exciting and you deserve to be proud.

It's not even that hot here most of the time and they still manage to find something weather-related to talk about every news segment.

My FIL called to invite me to his wife's BD party Sat. evening. DH will be working so I'd have to go alone. He made a point of mentioning that he'd also invited DH's daughter and family. I said I'd try to make it but I doubt I will. I won't know many people and am still feeling angry over the lack of a Father's Day card for DH, so I think it'd be best if I stay home and cuddle with Shane.

Another comment about the Vet waiting rooms for what it's worth...my Vet of almost 30 yrs has a waiting room and also a waiting room with a sign that says "for cats only."  In those 30 yrs, I can count on one hand the number of cats and owners that I have seen in the cat room.  Most of the time, they are in the main waiting room, usually in a crate or a box, but not always.  Ummm, my Bassets have a great sense of smell...duh.  Actually, I really have not had any trouble at all.  The office is very good about not having us wait for long before a room opens up. I just wonder why cat owners can't be considerate of dog owners...but then cats are allowed to roam and dogs are not...  Guess it goes with the territory!

My neighbor brought over some nice, red tomatoes...still warm from the sun.  They will be yummy with my hamburger patty!  I am so glad to have them share the fruit of their labor!

My brother emailed me to ask if I'd gotten a claim from Prudential. I didn't know what he was talking about and he said it had to do with a life insurance policy my dad had. He then said Prudential would be calling and they did. I just spent 10 min's on the phone with a woman answering a ton of questions, all very legal sounding and telling me that since my sister had died, her third would go to her children. She wanted to know if I knew how to get in touch with them and said if they don't come forward, her share will go to the state at the end of August. I finally ask her how much the policy was worth and she says "well, it'll have to be divided 3 ways but it's approximately $5,814". I said "that's the amount to be divided?" and she said it was. lol - I know I shouldn't laugh but for just the briefest time I was imagining it was a couple million. How is it that my dad died in 2006 and they're just now settling this policy though Hmm

We know it's hot, and unless you're dumb, you know to take it easy outdoors, and drink a lot of water.

Actually, senior citizens, folks with disabilities and others need to hear this often, like several times a day. I live with two seniors down stairs and they cannot tell when they are getting overheated or dehydrated. They have to be reminded to drink and eat. It is really important to keep reminding people and to keep checking in on them.  Too many die needlessly in the heat.

I need to make supper, but I can't decide what I want. I had some fresh peas from the garden last night-mixed them in a cold pasta salad. Maybe I'll do that again tonight.

Hugs for all who need them.

That's a very good point.  Living here in Texas, where the heat is brutal in the summe,r you would think that people do understand the dangers but unfortunately many people have heat strokes and some die.  It isn't just the elderly, though they are often very vulnerable. Many elderly here are on extremely tight budgets and have no air conditioning or can't afford to use it.  Many don't even have fans.  Our FD has a large program asking for fans to donate to people who need them.  Athletes, people who work outside or in hot conditions, children at play are at risk.  Heatstroke is quite insidious and often the symptoms are overlooked until a person has gotten in serious trouble.  Working with men who are working and exerting themselves in temperatures in excess of 115 F has taught me to remind them often to take frequent breaks, drink plenty of fluids and don't push yourself in the heat.  It may seem dumb to point out the obvious but often the obvious isn't as obvious as it might seem.

Thankfully, Gracie is fine, it's my friend's foster dog Macie who is a black GSD/mix (to me she could be part cattle dog) who had the anal gland problem.  I looked at Gracie when I got home and thanked her for being a good healthy girl.

Oops, sorry about my poor reading skills! I am glad gracie is just fine :)

I'm with Kate and Jackie on this one.  My mom doesn't drink enough to keep a gnat alive, and she thinks she drinks a LOT.  Her apartment is at the tail end of the duct system and they keep a long space heater in her apt for winter and install an AC window unit in the summer.  Recently, she was getting really confused again, as she did when her sodium bottomed out and we almost lost her, and it turned out she was severely dehydrated from teh heat.  Mom drinks at meals and thats about it.  She says she never gets thirsty and she's been like that for years.

In this extreme heat and humidy, my ankles and lower legs swell horribly.  I was home by 1 today and DID stay inside.  But, it was 91 degrees on the upper level so I stayed on the lower level, but if I got up to do anything, I got dizzy, and I was drinking like a fish.  And I'm relatively young and healthy.......

I think that even the most loving parent might not realize how quickly and easily a child can be overcome by the brutal heat.  I'm just saying......

Can't wait for the thunderstorms to move in and slash the heat and humidity.....

I know ,  I know, some people do need the reminder. Perhaps this is annoying me more because I am recognizing that tomorrow, although it will not be quite as hot, I've got some jogging behind a bike to do. Luckily, we haven't had to go out yet with the kid I was with. Actually, one of the people running it was telling us to start getting ready, and drinking our water tonight.

Earlier today, I saw two idiots walking big black hairy dogs along the road, at about 11:00 AM. I say idiots because I don't need to know much to know they are idiots. In order to be at that part of the road, they probably walked a minimum of half a mile if they came from one of the closest houses to the road. That means they were going to walk these dogs at least 1 mile, and it was 93 with a 102 heat index. If I weren't going to work, I might have had to stop and scream at these idiots.

Cathy, I'm going to guess that at the time your dad died, nobody knew about the policy to claim it.  When Mel died, I had to call the insurance company to let them know, and then had to mail them the policy along with an original of the death certificate. It probably takes them quite awhile to get to the unclaimed ones. You'll probably get a little over $1,900 which is enough for a fun shopping trip but that's not much to split three ways for your sister's kids.

I can't believe how much the wind has picked up in the last few hours.  I think it's actually going to be chilly tonight so I don't think I'll be needing the ceiling fan on.  Considering how hot it was last weekend, this is a nice change.

It is ridiculously hot. In the 100s every day. Thank heavens I have dogs who sleep all day, walks are a rarity these days
