Karen, if we lived closer, DH would sneak into your yard and raid your fig tree!
He loves to cook with fresh & dried figs and has used them in salads like you described, appetizers, and my favorite -- a fig/plum sauce that he makes with a pork loin that is delicious! We've never looked into whether a fig tree would grow in our climate. Might have to research that.
Speaking of growing things, I limited myself to only 3 new hostas at the specialty nursery on Saturday. I got one medium size (12-18 inches) called Purple Glory which has dark green leaves, with purple leaf stalks. I got a giant one (it'll get to 3 feet or so) called Winter Snow -- it has chartreuese leaves with cream/white streaking and edges. And, just because the name cracked me up, I got a dwarf one called Popo. It'll only be 3-6 inches wide, with bluish-green leaves. If I could, I'd buy one of every variety -- it's hard to choose only a few each season!
Glenda, I'm sorry the situation with your sister and her extended family is so complicated and stressful for everyone. I hope things improve soon.
Cathy, I'm glad Shane did so well with the children. Now that school is out, we're hoping to work with our neighbors and their kids with Ruby so she can do more than visit with them through the fence. I don't think she'll ever be calm like Shane sounds (or like Tonka was), but we'll do our best. She loves seeing them and takes treats from them through the fence, so that's a good start.
The weekend went too fast. We had two great days weather-wise. It was even a bit too hot for me on Saturday, but it sure was nice to be outside a lot. We had dinner with Leslie (tashakota) and her husband Saturday night at a place with an outdoor patio. A great time, although it got a bit chilly and they lit up the firepit!
