    so when your dog sits..............(kpwlee)

Does their butt touch the ground?

Bugsy rarely lets his butt touch the ground

    example 1

    example 2

Yes, Luke does, and he sweeps the floor with his tail.

Yep, although there are times Caleb "butt wiggles" so hard his butt comes up off the ground.

That seems to be typical of Dobermans, GSPs and Vizslas.  Wonder if it's a Pointer thing, too?

Mine do a "lazy sit" so the hip / haunch is on the ground.

    • Gold Top Dog
Maze does the butt hover while Sandy only does it when the grass is wet. Dodger does the flop and throw his knees open. LOL

Ruby often keeps her butt off the ground - but I've assumed it's because she's avoiding the cold concrete or wet grass.  I'll have to pay attention more closely and see if she's consistent.  She sits very upright, like she's ready to spring into action at any moment.  Tonka always sat on one hip with his legs out to the side, very lazy and relaxed.

Ari does the sit on the side/haunch type of sit.  Usually with one leg sticking out funny (we call it her wonky leg).

Rex and Gabby always sit properly.  Belle and Twister hover if they're excited but will sit with butts on the ground when they are not overly excited. If I'm being anal, pun intended, I wait them out until they plant it firmly.  I've had several Labs who never let their butts touch the ground.  Not good when you need a steady dog.

Just scrolled through a zillion pics - the butt only touches when he does a sloppy sit, like this:

Every other sit i have is like the first ones posted - legs under him, butt off the ground, tail seeming to be used as a kangaroo does to stabilize LOL

Karen - Bugsy's sloppy sit is how Ari usually sits, only with that one leg kicked out a bit more lol.  She can and does sit properly, but not usually.  No biggie for me, I just want her butt in the near vicinity of the floor lol.

Oh I don't really care - i don't like the sloppy sit when we are doing anything - if he wants to sit like that to relax, go for it!

I have wondered if prissy pants didn't want his butt to touch the ground because it is wet or cold or whatever but I am not 100% convinced he can do a proper, legs under him sit and have his butt touch the floor. It seems his tail is in the way.

I never even thought it was odd until someone said wow does he always sit like that? LOL

He & I aren't going to win any obedience awards so its fine :)

Funny! And yeah, I see this a lot with the super short coated breeds like dobes and such.

My dogs have so much fur that I wouldn't be able to tell if they were sitting properly or not lol. But I do think that they firmly plant their butts on the ground every time. I know Lily does because she often plants her butt on the ground when I'm trying to brush out her fluffy pants. She hates that.

Some breeds can't, I do remember that from Basic Manners class.  We had a Greyhound in class, and the instructor made a point of letting the owners know, that is how your dog will sit, don't try to get her more "relaxed" and have her butt on the ground, not going to happen.

As for whether your boy CAN do it or not, I've no idea, lol.
