Sammy discovers his voice!

    Sammy discovers his voice!

As most of you are probably aware, basenjis do not bark.  They aren't known for being silent though, there's a host of sounds they can make, most prominent among them being the yodel or baroo.  Well my 2 basenjis never seemed to think much of yodeling, I had never heard a single yodel from either one.  My husband I went so far as to try to teach them to sing.  We downloaded clips of basenjis yodeling and sat down on the floor with them yodeling for them.  All we ever managed to accomplish was to look like fools while they just watched in amazement at how strange their humans were.

This past Friday my pups were up at the crack of dawn, their normal routine for summer.  I let them outside to romp around while I went back to bed to get a few more minutes of sleep.  Imagine my surprise when I am woken by a very loud yodel right outside my bedroom window!  I jumped out of bed and looked at the window to my Sammy standing there looking a little confused.  Next thing I know his nose is pointed up in the air and he lets loose another loud yodel.  He was very amused with himself.  He started prancing all over the back yard letting out the loudest and longest yodels I had ever heard.  He was so proud of himself.  Since that morning he has backed off a bit, but he is now a regular yodeler, singing out at least a few times a day.  Kiya looks at him like he's lost his mind, she is too dignified to ever do anything like that.  But at least now my friends and family will believe me when I tell them that basenjis yodel!

    Way to go, Sammy!!

Unfortunately, I don't have any video of that morning, I sure wish I did.  I will get some new photos of the pups though.  Kiya is looking a bit ragged at the moment (she's got a thyroid issue or is blowing her coat, taking her to the vet to find out which) but I'm sure they'd both be up for posing for some photos.
