Interceptor

    Interceptor

So Interceptor was off the market for a while....my vets office said its back in production but its back ordered...go figure, this IS spring and time to think about HW for us cold states.

Not sure if my vet has Dane size...but they said they have a replacement for now...didn't say what.

Wondered if anyone is having a problem getting a hold of Interceptor?

I just got some for Buffy (60 lb) last month...  I'm considering switching Java over to Trifexis because of her flea allergies.  I may switch Buffy when the interceptor is gone.

When Sugar was in at our vet last Thurs, I asked about Interceptor, and the shortage.  They have not had any issues . . . BUT, they mostly suggest the other one - Heartgard.  Only a few of us were placed on Interceptor, due to the breed of dog we have.

I like Interceptor as it also works as your monthly de-wormer.  So if they give you a substitute, keep in mind what other stuff it may or may not cover.

Yeah..you know I don't know why but I just feel safer with Interceptor than any of them..... and I really do'nt feel safe giving it either. Something about putting a pesticide in my dog I don't like.  We never had Ollie on HW prevention...just used to get him tested twice a year... I live in Ohio where we really only have to worry a few months out of the year.   BUT...somehow in my old age.....I feel kind of scared to NOT give it. EEKs...darned if I don't and darned if I do!

You might try foster's and smith - the stoppage of production was a while back from what I understand. I had no probs getting the big boy version or the extra small tab we use to cover Bugsy.

My vet was out of it for a while, but I just was able to get some for Luke last month.

On Fosters and Smith website they say that they stopped production..and offer another.  They don't even talk about having any.  HHHmm!

Probably my vet has only what is left, have to call to see if its Gibby sized.

I just checked Pet Meds and its not available there either..... I don't think that the company has settled its problems which until tonight, I hadn't bothered to read.  Great, and I thought the company that made PH 6 was bad!!!!

Dyan -- this is voluntary on their part -- it's not heinous (and it originated on their human pharmaceuticals side).  Please don't compare them to Fr. Dodge!

Heads up on Trifexis- if it works the same way Program does (and I believe it does), the fleas have to bite the dog for it to kill them. Not something you want with a flea allergic dog.  I heard on the commercial it "controls" fleas as well.  I'm assuming that means you will eventually have a flea free environment due to the fleas not being able to reproduce and dying of "old age".  But that will only happen if all dogs are on Trifexix, and cats are on something similar.  Plus, if any of your critters leave your property, they can pick up fleas elsewhere.

You know Callie... Ft Dodge voluntarily recalled PH6....    not sure there is any drug company in the whole world I trust...but after reading this while trying to find out if Interceptor is in fact back out or not.....I for sure don't think too much more of this company.

This is from " Trends Today " an AAHA newsletter:

Novartis has been in hot water with the FDA the last few months for several uncorrected violations at its Sandoz plants.

Sandoz is the generic pharmaceuticals division of Novartis.

Novartis received a warning letter from the FDA dated Nov. 18, 2011, warning Novartis CEO Joseph Jimenez of violations at its Sandoz manufacturing facilities in Broomfield, Colo., Wilson, North Carolina and in Boucherville, Quebec, Canada.

Many of the violations the FDA cited were repeat offenses from as far back as 2008 that Novartis had failed to properly correct. Citations included inadequate cleaning of equipment, failure to follow procedures designed to prevent microbiological contamination of drugs, and lack of investigation of failed products.

Trifexis KILLS fleas, program does not. The two are NOT similar! Do not let the online companies trick you :). ANY flea prevention, the flea has to bite to die. Some attempt to 'repel' but the flea still has to bite to die. Comfortis/Trifexis kill the fleas within 30 minutes of taking the medication (similar to capstar, only it lasts the entire month) whereas the topicals take roughly 18 HOURS to kill 1 flea! That is why is works so much better for dogs with flea allergies.

I spoke with Novartas yesterday in regards to their NSAID, Deramaxx, and that is still not back in production. I did not ask about the Interceptor/Sentinal, so I'm not sure if those really are back in production yet or not. Some reps have a certain supply that they are able to sell to their clinics, that's the only way I can order our Deramaxx right now.

Well THAT doesn't sound too good, if they are not in production, bet none of it is!

Dyan, I picked up Java's Trifexis yesterday.  It is made by Elanco, not Novartis, and the HW part of it is the same thing as Interceptor. It just has the added ingredient for flea protection..

As far as fleas biting...dang, they are going to do that no matter what.  My Vet pretty much said that I would probably never see another flea again...well, we shall see about that one...lol!

I got some Comfortis for Buffy, as I have some Interceptor for her, and surely don't want to toss it.

    Trifexis=Interceptor + Comfortis

Thanks!!!   Wondering if that is what my vet is going to offer...but problem for me is I don't even want to really give him HW meds much less the added flea chemicals.  Geez...and its been sooooo warm soooooo early this year.  Well...guess I have to make up my mind somehow.  LOL!
