I was about to go to jail...

I was about to go to jail...

Sometimes I think it's unwise for me to leave the house because I end up dealing with total morons. I had to go buy dog food and fish so I took the dogs with. Now when I take Shelby and Souffle with me, they are on a coupler and I walk them with a traffic lead so they are right at my side. As I'm walking into Petco, I'm passing through the 2nd sliding doors when I hear a lady screaming and a dog growling. I look behind me and see this huge *** Lab lunging towards my dogs. This dog was an ogre. He was bigger than Shiloh. Now here's the best part. The dog is on a Flexi Lead. The owner is at the register. The Flexi allowed the dog to go around the exit doors to come into the entrance doors. And the Flexi is still extending because the moron holding it does not know how to use it. So as I'm trying to get away, the dog is still heading towards me. I tell the lady...

    Me: "Please control your dog."

and the dog is still coming towards me. Now I'm pissed because it's obvious she has no control over this dog as he's dragging her and she has no business walking him on a Flexi. I scream...

Me: "GET YOUR F%$*&*  DOG STUPID!!!!!!!"

    Moron: "I'M TRYING!!"

Me: "YOU'RE NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH DUMB A**! IF YOU CAN'T CONTROL HIM, DON'T USE A G** DAMN FLEXI LEASH!"

Now people are standing around just watching this. The Flexi is all extended and she's trying to reel the dog in and I just head straight towards the fish department. Good Lord almighty. Why on earth do people do dumb stuff like that? A dog like that should've never been on a Flexi. And that's why I can't stand Flexi's. The majority who use them have no clue as to how to use them properly. Angry

Sometimes I think the owners need more training than their dogs...[8|]

OMG how scary! I can relate though... one time I was at the park with my daughter when she was 16 months old (NOT a dog park a kid park) and some moron with an out of control, HYPER Border Collie on a Flexi shows up and the dog came running at my daughter! The dog only wanted to play, but he was dragging this lady behind him and she couldn't figure how to reel him in! I scooped my daughter up and the dog ended up getting tangled around us and the stupid Flexi left burns on my legs![:@]
Our dog parks recently banned the use of Flexis due to the number of accidents happening at the hands of people who have no CLUE how to use them!

I personly don't trust the flexi leads. For one thing they are made of sting and attached by a sping. I tried one on my dog but she just chewed through the string in a few secounds, so I tied it back together and then she took off and completly pulled the string out of the plastic case. I've never bought anouther one sence, glad I was in the mountans and had a back up leash but anywere else I would have been in trouble.

    Meilani-

That sounds like a perfectly reasonable response on your part to me.  Personally, I hate flexi's.  They should NOT be allowed in public places.

Argh.  I HATE Flexis!  My aunt uses one for her little Shih Tzu.  Whenever I have to go over there to take her little dog out for bathroom breaks, I end up bringing my own leash 'cause the flexi just aggravates me and I feel like I have no control.[>:]

I hate the flexi-leads, so many people have them and cant control them.

    I'll play devils advocate here.

I love the flexi, but there is a time and a place for it.  When I need Xerxes in tight, I use a slip lead or a coursing lead, but on our long walks, I use the flexi with no problem.  But then I'm WAY WAY more attentive to my dog that I should be.

That must have been a scary situation, but Meilani, you have such an incredibly picturesque way with words - better than a movie! You really should take the time to write a book chronicling your adventures, in the pharmacy and out.  It would be a best seller for sure. [:)]

I've posted this before, but I'll do it again. When I worked for the pet store some guy came in with a dog he just adopted on a flexi lead.  The dog wasn't friendly and I had to climb on top of a register to get away from the dog because the owner couldn't control him.

Also, in a store people let their dogs wander all over while the "string" they are draging completly clears off store shelves and the dog runs into other dogs causing fights.  Uhggg!

I can't stand people who take their dogs to public places with Flexis.  We have has a dog lunge at Sally on the walking track at a park--the dog had a flexi.  Why would you take a dog that dislikes other dogs somewhere that you are going to PASS other dogs on a 4 ft wide trail on on flexi?  I also love the people who let their dogs go around the corner or down the aisle on a flexi.  One pet store in our area has actually banned flexi leads due to the problems they've had with them.

mel, you wouldn't have gone to jail you were well within your rights I would have used a few more adjectives then you did so I think  you were down right lady like girlfriend. Anyway the idoggers would have raised your bail.
I hate those things too by the way.

I've used flexis before to bring Brown and Grey to the bathroom at home, but other than that, I have little use for them. They always break (at least mine did), and I've had too many rope burns from other peoples' dogs on flexis. Personally, I hate when dogs are on flexis in public. It seems everytime I'm with Brown and Grey, another dog rounds the corner and comes running up to them barking his fool head off, and the owner is on the next aisle. That's happened to me far too many times, and in one case, the dog was tiny compared to my two, so while we're standing there minding our own business, the owner eventually made his/her way to the dog and tells me, "Dogs that large shouldn't be allowed here." I countered with, "Same for stupid people." She grabbed her dog and left. Score for Brown, Grey, and Marlania! lol

On a somewhat related note (well, not really, but just put up with this story lol)...another time, I had a halti on Grey, and this woman ran up to me and gave me a speech about how vicious dogs with muzzles shouldn't be in public because she knows about dogs, and he's obviously aggressive if he needs a muzzle. I'll leave my reply to her to your imaginations.[:D]

That's not the first time I've dealt with situations like this. I'm not against Flexi's per se, I just can't stand the morons who don't know how to use them properly or that there's a time and place for them. I can see using them if you're going for a nature walk, walk on the beach or whatever and want to give the dogs a bit more room to run without having them off leash. I've used a Flexi for my dogs when we go to my stepmom's brothers ranch. He's got acres of land that's not fenced in. Since my crackheads can't be trusted not to run into the highway and become road pancakes, I used a Flexi so they can run with the other dogs and not have to worry about them running off. I would never use one with Shiloh though. If he decided to bolt, I don't see how putting the lock down on the little rope would keep him in check. The dog in question should've never been on a Flexi. I'd go so far as to say he shouldn't even be on a long lead. He had to weigh at least 110lbs. He was dragging his owner. She had no control over him. I personally would not bring a dog like that to a pet supplies store for fear of him hurting/killing another pet. Thank God he didn't get one of my dogs or else I would've had to shank a dog and shank a stupid owner. There'd be a whole lot of shankin' goin on. Then you'd see my shank happy culo on the news, covers of the Sun Times, Trib and Daily Southtown. [:D][:D]

Maybe there should be flexi licenses. My first dog came to us with one, and there is no way she should have had one. She was seriously dog aggressive, and a major puller. I'm guessing the woman my mom took her from was smaller than me, and when that dog got going really good, I was on the ground. I can't imagine someone smaller than me trying to wrangle that dog on a flexi. Needless to say, as soon as I saw the dog, we went to get a new leash (my friend walked her up to me as I was coming out of school, we put her in the car, and off to the store we went to get her a real leash).
Although, I actually like it for Max in the park. When he gets the zoomies and tries to grab the leash and use it as a tug rope and swing around on it, he gets no tension, so he gives up pretty fast. Plus, as he races back and forth, it retracts instead of tangling on things. Still, as much as a I like it, there are times when I utterly despise the stupid thing.
If only more people knew how to use to lock, and realized that not every dog is a good candidate for using one, they wouldn't be so hated.
