    Is this unusual?

When Dante was a pup someone decided to get his tail docked (no, NOT me!). The person who did it obviously didn't know what they were doing! They chopped off his ENTIRE tail! He doesn't even have a nub to wag. When they did it they also managed to damage his anal sphincter. As a result he has a hard time controlling his bowels. When he has to go he has to go NOW! He is such a good boy though, he NEVER messes in the house, he makes it very clear that he needs to go out. When he is done going potty, he usually has a mess on his behind. Now, I am not complaining because he is the BEST dog with impeccable manners and I wouldn't trade him for the world. His little problem just requires a few extra seconds out of my day and a steady supply of baby wipes![:D] I was just wondering if anyone has heard of this happening before? I've had Rottie and Rottie mixes my whole life I just LOVE them and I have never seen a dog with this problem before.
My husband and I have been browsing Petfinder looking for an older Rottie who needs a forever home and I was just wondering if this is more common than I think in dogs with docked tails. I wouldn't mind another dog who has the same problem, it's merely a slight inconvenience, I am just curious!
    Thanks!

I have never heard of this but I would like to say you have a heart of gold! That is so touching! I wish all humans could show aniamls as much compassion as they show us, and as you have shown your dog.

Someone, not a dog lover, told me a crazy story that if you cut the tail off and burry it in your yard the dog will never wonder far from it's tail!!!! I thought that was the crazyest thing I've ever heard but this person was serious as he did that to his dogs! I can't belive some people actuly belive stuff like that!

There are tons of docked dogs who do not have problems - as long as they were done correctly.

It is also possible that they did the job themselves *shudder* as opposed to having a vet do it and could have cut too close, damaging nerves.  Or it could have gotten infected after it was done and the infection caused damage - also not uncommon with "home jobs".

UGH! I can't even imagine cutting off a helpless puppies tail! The thought makes my stomach turn![:'(]
And burying the tail in the yard? That's nuts! What happens if you move? [sm=rolleyes.gif]
Sheprano~ Thanks for your kind words! They mean alot. I love Pit Bulls too! I fostered a little guy who had been hit by a car and was never treated while we got him fixed up and he is now living with a wonderful family. I miss his, he was such a sweetie! His name was Clifford!

You don't live too awful far from me! I live in Bakersfield and my family lives in Livermore so I go up that way quite a bit! When I was a kid, my Dad lived in Seaside for a long time!

I guess when ideas like that came around, people usually lived in the same house their whole life.  So many of those supersticious ideas came about in the late 1800s - early 1900s.  To think people still believe it just scares the crap out of me!
