Bittersweet Day. Part II. Roamer's Pictures

Oh you guys,  even though I was extremely sad yesterday for all the events, I was also happy to see my roamer had stuck around.  He must have been full after eating in the morning because he slept all day.  Around 2:00 pm.  I left to go buy him food and Romeo's too and to go get my sweet terror from doggy day care, it was around 4:30 pm when I made it back and notice he was gone.  Around 6:00pm he was back, I got him some NB food roll in beef and turkey flavor and also some NV chicken kibble.  We went through the routine, I went to feed him,  he ran away and stopped to look at me, I put down his food a big 6 inch piece of the NB beef and he came running towards it, ate, had some water fell asleep again between some plants, but he left again.  Around 11:00 pm I took Romeo out and guess what? My roamer was back, yeah. !!!! I put a big comforter on the patio folded in fourths and left the patio door open, turned off the light, closed the blinds and went to bed; 1/2 hour later I went to see if he had come in and he did!! he was asleep on the comforter.  I sat on the floor and watched him a long time through the blinds and could not help it and cried.  I think is my old age, my hormones are out of control. I was born in 1967 so I am getting close to the big 40, dangerous age for a woman. [;)]

Anyway, this morning I woke early, because I know the does too.  I usually see him on the streets around 6:00 am.  He had made his way out again and was sleeping between the plants on the cool ground.  He saw me, got up, came over to me, sniff my hand and licked it.  And you know it, the waterworks almost started again.  When I tried to touch him, he backed away, so I put his food down the NB, but he would not touch it, I put a couple of pieces on my hand and he took it, but would not eat more.  I opened the bag of NV, his head went up, nostrils flared and he dove in. [:D] He had some water and went to sleep.

Now my only problem is Romeo, I don't know why but every time he sees this dog, even when we would find him a couple of miles from the complex, Romeo transforms into monster dog, and is scary, because he means business, his growling is deep from within his stomach ( is his not his throaty growl) and his body is all tense, bares his teeth, well you get the picture.  I don't know what to do'.

Okay, long post again.  Sorry, here are the pictures I was able to take this morning.  I say Sharpei mix, but what do you all think? I think he is beautiful, maybe because I love him.  You really cannot tell from the pictures, but whe he yawns he has a lot of black spots on his tongue.  He is so cute, my roamer, I want to name him Roscoe, any opinions?

I definitely see SharPei in there! Also a bit of lab (Ears) and possibly some Shepherd.  What a handsome bugger!  Glad you're making progress

He is beautiful! I agree, Sharpei/Shep or Sharpei/Husky, either way is is drop dead gorgeous!

Do you have a blanket that smell's like your baby? Let that dog sleep on it and take the one you have that he is sleeping on now and wrap your baby in it. This will transfer smells onto him.

He looks very healthy from what I can see. Just give it time and take things slow. He will transform and completely trust in you.

    Yay! What a great day!

He looks so much like my grandparent's old dog, Cosmo.  But Cosmo passed away last year around the age of ten due to cancer.  Unfortunately, my other computer with my pictures is broken, and very rarely will it stay on long enough to email them.  But if it does, I'll try to post a pic of Cosmo.

I say he looks like a shar-pei lab mix, possibly with some shepherd.  Either way he looks adorable.

Oh wow, I can defintly see how he would pull at your heart strings. He is has such a classic doggy look and defintly looks approachable. On the otehr hand he looks happy and healthy and not in immediate need of medical or nutritional health.....most likely thanks to your feedings. Does it seem as if he pretty much knows to stay outta the street? He sure is a handsome boy!

Wow.  He is really gorgeous.  I love him too!!! Keep us posted on your progress?  What would you like to ultimately come of it?  Would you like to just be able to hang with him when he comes around and have him be care free?  Would you like to take him into your home  and make him a part of the family? (forgive me if you have answered this before!)

No problem.  I would love to be able to keep him, but my dog Romeo does not stand him, never has, from the first time we saw him way back then and very far from where we live.  So, what I would like to happen is to find him a home, where they would still let me be part of his life, I love him so much .  My vet said she would take him, but if for some reason she changes her mind, well, as long is he is taken care of is what matters to me, even if I don't ever see him again.  Don't they say "if you love someone let them go".   For the longest time, I thought about just feeding him (which is what I have been doing),  but many nights I have stayed awake thinking about him (when it storms or when they say is going to freeze). My mother says, "you can't save them all Elizabeth" and I know this, but him, he has my heart.

--sheprano.--yes, it does seem like he can handle the streets.  I have seen him get chased by animal control, by some guys with their dogs, people in cars, and he always gets away.  He is my champion, and he does look healthy,  I was able to get him to eat a heartgard plus chewable, but  I cannot get close enough to him to put on any kind of flea preventative, when I am able I give him a Capstar, which is supposed to kill whatever fleas he has in 24 hrs, but he is on the streets all the time.

--forpaws---thank you that is a wonderful idea, I will try that.  If I could ever get Romeo to accept him I would just die of happiness.  lol Camel fleas! in his crotch and a** too!

Oh, wow!!  He's a handsome boy!  I also see Sharpei/Shepard.  Good luck whatever the outcome for him ends up being.

way to go, with your progress! sounds like he's beginning to trust you. he is so pretty!

What a sweet face!  I agree with GSD/Shar Pei. Tell Romeo to quit being a butt and let this boy be a part of your lives. Being he's a terrier (right?) he may or may not agree with that!

What a sweet looking face!  I am so glad that you are trying to take care of the roamer.  Do you think that he ever had a home?

I missed "Part One" of your story, so I had to go back and catch myself up.  Your original post had me in tears - what a compassionate and loving thing you did for that poor, old dog.  As other posters said, the actions you took on his behalf were more than basic kindness - they were angelic.  As hard as it was for you to go through what you did, it was ultimately so much better for that dog.  Instead of his last hours being ones of bewilderment, confusion, abandonment, fear, and loneliness in a strange cage or in a sterile room at the SPCA, his last night and day on earth included the greatest comforts a dog could ask for.  He had a healthy, tasty meal to make his belly warm, he heard gentle voices around him (other than Romeo's growls!), and he had a safe, quiet, comfortable ;place to rest all night.  Finally, his final moments were spent hearing kind words and feeling caring touches.  He couldn't have asked for a more peaceful way to head for the Bridge.

You are truly an angel.  Your roamer dog can see that - that's why he has shown you small steps of trust.  It will take lots of time for him to let down his guard entirely, but it sounds like progress is being made.  I think it would be hard to add him to your household if it's really going to upset Romeo so much, but maybe it could be done.  Or, if your vet could offer him a loving home, that would be great.  I guess it would depend if he'd ever be able to trust another person, since it has taken him so long to get comfortable with you.

I wish I had some helpful advice for you!  I just want to say again that what you've done for both those dogs is so admirable.  [sm=angel.gif]

Roam is definitely Shepherd/Sharpei with possibly a little Mastiff mixed in.  He is a handsome gentlemen and probably has been mistreated therefore the hesitation.  Can u tell if he has been neutered? If not, that could explain Romeo's aggression.
He is slowly becoming your dog you know...

    Beautiful dog!!!

I definitely see shar pei in there.
