    car sick everytime

    Hi everyone,
Jagger is about 8 months old and he gets car sick everytime we take a drive, wether it's a 10 minute drive or an hour drive. Tomorrow we are going on a camping trip to a park about 1 hour away and we really don't want him to get sick. (he obviously doesn't like it)
He shakes anytime we even get close to a car and we have to hold him on our lap and pet him. He doesn't tend to move around or anything. If he is in his crate, he gets really scared and throws up a lot more. We tried not feeding him before the drive (4 or 5 hours before), but he still throws up, only it's just a foamy substance.
I would like to give him something for motion sickness. Is half a Gravol too strong for an 8 pound puppy? That's about the only thing I have at home right now.
    Thank you for your tips!

My dog has always gotten car sick.  It started out him getting sick after too long of a drive.  But now, because he knows he is going to get sick he has anxiety which is why they get sick and start to shake right away.

Did you take your dog on lots of car rides when he was young?  It could be JUST anxiety and that can be fixed over some time.  I have found that nothing that I have ever given Duke has helped him with the car sickness.  On the advice from a vet, we gave him gravol and it made him worse.

We are so used to it now, we just go prepared.  Make sure you bring a stack of towels and as soon as he starts acting like he is going to throw up, try to pull over and get him out of the car, but if you don't have time than just use one of your towels.  Oh, also bring a garbage bag for the towels so your car doesn't stink up.

Well, we only got Jagger when he was almost 5 months and he was a very nervous, terrified puppy (had been neglected or hit). We don't have a car, but we visit friends and family almost every weekend, so he gets drives often enough. That's what I do now, paper towels and garbage bags, but I feel so bad for him. Funny thing is, he always gets sick when we are 5 to 10 minutes away from our destination!! I'd like to try a Gravol but I'm scared to give him too much.

When we gave Duke the gravol, we just called a local vet office.  We told them his weight and they told us how much to give him.  I hated it though, it made him really druged and he ended up puking WAY more.

I know how much of a pain it is.  We feel like we never want to take him anywhere or go camping because of it.  And yes, you feel so bad, almost like he would have been better off if you had just left him at home! Poor things, all we can do is hope that they grow out of it. (different vets tell me that he will all of the time).

Max didn't get sick, but he used to really hate to get in the car.  I'd have to literally pick him up and stuff him in -  and then he wouldn't lie down and relax.  He'd stand there, leaning against the back seat, looking terrified. After I started using the car to take him to his obedience classes (which he loved) and to the dog park, he started associating the car with *fun*.  Now he hops right in and relaxes.

Well, Jagger will doze off sometimes, and then it's as if when he hears someone say "We're almost there!", he sits up and gets sick. Poor pup! I hope he'll be all right for tomorrow's trip! It's a really hilly and curvy drive, so it'll be a real test to see if he can hold out without getting sick too many times.

Can you maybe refrain from saying "we're almost there"?  I know that's not much help but if that's the trigger, try not saying it?

Of course, I know what you mean. But I don't really say it everytime. I mean, last time, we only went to the grocery store (10 mins away) and as we were entering our driveway he threw up! [:'(]
    Wish me luck for tomorrow!

I suggest ginger capsules, a half hour before leaving.

Also, if your dog is not crated in the car and it's at all possible to get him in one, DO!  That can help with motion sickess.  Ginger capsules are not fool proof, but they help more often than not

I know it won't help for this trip but my dog also gets very anxious when we travel....he hates going out the front door of the house cuz he knows we are getting in the car. I found "Ginger Tummy", it is a liquid and I give it to him about a half hour before the trip...for the most part it works...for a long trip I will give him  second dose on the way. It is a little tricky to give, either hold his mouth open and squirt it in or I usually take the smallest piece of bread to soak up the stuff...then give him that. They say ginger helps the tummy and this stuff also has chamomile and some other stuff which is supposed to help calm him.

    Good luck.

Where do you find "Ginger Tummy"?  I might try that...

Turn on the A/C full blast and direct it at his face.  The cooler you can make him, the better.  The sound of the A/C will also help as well.  If your car doesn't have A/C, open your windows to allow air to blow on him, but not so much that he can fall out.  Playing music might help as well.  But I'd try the cooling effect first thing.

Rescue remedy is supposed to help calm dogs, and people, and also help with anxiety.  You can get it at a health food store, GNC, vitamin place, etc.

April has always gotten shaky in the car for short trips and sometimes hyperventilates.  We only take her once in awhile on a long trip and then we give her dramamine.  It works.  I don't give it to her for the short trip to the vet though or to the dog store, she only is like this on the way there, coming home she is fine.
