I am wondering if this is a problem other "mixed breed" dogs have had before.

The other day I called the groomer I normally send my dogs to. I have a cockapoo who was about eight months old or so then (10 months old now) I asked the groomer if she could leave about an inch or so of fur on the puppy so she would still have that "fuzzy cuddly" cockapoo look to her. I was told that she only shaves dogs down or at least does not do "trims" I thought this was strange. Shouldn't a dog groomer know how to do different cuts for different kinds of dogs? Has anyone else ever delt with a groomer that only shaves dogs down or cuts them really short? Does this strike anyone else as odd?[8D]

Nope, never had to deal with this, because I don't take my dog to a groomer, but this does sound weird to me. Was she refusing to do it, or didn't know how?? Any groomer should certianly know how to do different cuts for different breeds, etc. If she won't cut the dog the way you want it, maybe you should find a different groomer. Just my opinion, though.

I think you should find another groomer. Or maybe call her back and ask her to explain to you why she can not do this...   I would hope she would  know how too do something other then a shave down....

yes, that is definitely weird. unless you want a shaved dog, find another groomer! when i was little my mom took our little terrier cross to a groomer that was not our regular one (our usual one was booked) and even though she told them what to do, they completely shaved him, included knicking several parts of his body causing sores. not good!
a good groomer, that knows dogs and is comfortable working with dogs, and LIKES working with them, should definitely be giving you more options.

Sounds like this grooomer definitely does not need your business. I'd find another one. Would you go to a hair stylist that would only shave your hair down, and not trim it? That goomer is rediculous! Pfft.

I used to have a little lab/cocker X groomed and he looked a lot cuter with just a little *fluff* on his legs instead of shaved - and that's how the groomer did him. I can't imagine a groomer refusing to do a trim.  What does she/he do with poodles? Shave them down?

    Definetely get a new groomer.

We took Duke to a different groomer than usual (our usual one was booked solid for 3 months), we told them that we wanted his mustache & beard left and his hair to be left a little longer.  We came to pick him up and they had shaved EVERYTHING he was shaking and you could tell that he was embarrased.  We made a big huge fuss over him and told him how beautiful he was, but really I was thinking "how did they make HIM look ugly?"  It has been a month and it is slowly growing back.  I will NEVER bring him back there again.  A good groomer should be able to do whatever kind of trim or shave that you ask.  And if there is a reason why they can't (sometimes if it is too matted it is easier for them and the dog to just shave it right down), they should tell you.

That's ridiculous to only offer a shave.  What are your other dogs and what does the groomer do with them?  (You said it's your regular groomer.)  Have you been happy with this groomer up till now?

My daughter took our Charlie (13 yr 0d Shih Tzu) ,he was 2 then, to a different groomer and he came back shaved.  He was so embarassed that he went and jumped up on the bed and got inside the pillow case and hid.

I had been happy with the groomer until now. I owned an English Cocker Spaniel and I liked her with her hair shorter. It was more easy to deal with and super cute! Still, I did not want this for a cockapoo with her soft but poodle like hair!

I took her to the groomer at the vets office and they did exactly what I wanted for her. I will post a picture of her when I can okay?
