    About vets

I want to switch my dog's vet. There's nothing wrong with them-- she's only been a couple times but everything went fine-- however, this vet is too long of a drive. It's a half hour away and 40-45 minutes coming back due to a construction detour. Not only is this a hassle and waste of gas, but this is not good should an emergency arise.

There are a number of vets closer to me, 2 of which are especially close. My problem is I have no idea how good they are. I know next to nothing about most of them. How can I find out more information about a vet? I don't really know many people to ask. Is there some sort of online directory where people can leave comments about a vet's office, both good and bad? Or something similar to this?

I have been to one of the two nearby vets for my guinea pig. They mis-diagnosed him as having a fungus when he really had mites. I have heard that most general vets are only trained for cats and dogs and that is why they mis-diagnosis other, give wrong meds, etc. for other animals. Is this still a red flag?

I'm not going to switch until I know I've found a good vet. So any advice on how to find out would be appreciated. Also if anyone actually happens to live near I do (just north of Richmond, VA) ... I would love any recommedations!

Is there a Craigslist in Richmond?  You could post there in the pets section and ask for recomendations.

i would either ask other conscientious dog owners that you know, what their recommendations are, or if you know of a store in town that deals in high quality pet foods/pet products, ask for their opinion.

About 3 years ago I found myself needing to find a new vet for a senior dog.  I just started asking people I met in the park walking their dogs and was able to find a great one just about 5 minutes away from home. [:D]
