Does Your Dog Like To Ride In The Car?

Does your dog like rides in the car? I think that every dog I ever had liked going for a ride in the car. But I have had some people tell me their dog is scared of or simply does not want to go in the car. My current dog Sir Gavin absolutely loves the car. He gets excited when he sees we are heading for a car ride but at the same time he is very well mannered on the ride. I have him sit next to the door when I open it and he waits there until I say “In the car” then he jumps up on the seat. During the ride he like to check out the route, funny thing is as soon as I pull into the parking lot at the dog park or as soon as I arrive at our favorite hiking spot he gets excited and begins to whine with joy! When it’s time to get out of the car (he used to jump out as soon as I opened the door) now he listens to the command “stay” and waits until I say “Okay” to jump out. If we had a big day hiking or at the dog park to the point he is tired he will curl up on the seat and rest (not sleep) but as soon as I turn into the driveway, he always pops up as if to say “Yeah, We’re home!” Please share your experiences with your dog(s) and riding in the car. Oh YES!!!  sometimes I think people just don't give their dogs the opportunity -- or they take the dog once and there's a problem and they avoid it.

It's one of the first things we train ... because they GOTTA get in the car to go to the vet, to "go" with or anything else.  So we desensitize it if there's ever a problem.

But my dogs think it rocks -- and they "Know their way" all the places THEY like to go.  They know the turn off for both my regular and holistic vets.  I always take treats to the vet so it's a good thing to them ... and all of mine actually get EXCITED when they know we're going to the vet.

We take them everywhere -- motels, hotels, festivals, anyplace we can.

Kobe gets really excited about rides in the car. He gets a little to silly about getting in the car,but once in The car he settles down. Magnus also enjoys it but he has to wear a seat belt, he's very wiggily squiggly. Magnus is very Wiggily Squiggly about every thing! Boadicea likes rides as well and rides well. Rogue was my only dog that did not care for it.made worse when we moved to this house. He hated riding with The movin stuff in the car and after that was was very apprehensive. But never out of control, just not happy. Vinny does not seem to like it much but its the getting ready And getting in and starting off. but usually curls in a ball and falls a sleep. He is still very young tho.

Yep she does.  Though I think she likes it more for the end result than actually being in the car.  Usually we're going to someplace fun like agility class/trials or a nice place to hike.  So the car is the interim step to something exciting!

Most of the time she just curls up and sleeps in the car.  She doesn't look out the windows or anything.

nova, the border collie, loves the car. it is truly her happy place. she would gladly sit in the car, in the driveway, for hours. in fact, she has to wear a thundershirt while we are driving because her excitement in overwhelming.

twitch, on the other hand, tolerates the car. he doesn't particularly enjoy it but knows going with his people is always better than staying home. once the car reaches "terminal velocity" (faster than going down the driveway speed), he plants himself on the floor of the backseat. when we hit our small road and driveway, he hops up on the seat and opens the window to say hi to the neighbor dogs.

Our experiences are pretty much the same as Callie's.  Caleb absolutely loves going in the vehicles.  He doesn't care if he can't get out once we reach our destination or not.  And, like Callie's dogs, he knows the routes to our regular haunts.  He figured out rather quickly that if I go the back way out of the supermarket parking lot that means we're going to Cherrybrook next.  I found that out when I went that way one day just to get out on the road at the traffic light.  As soon as he saw the light coming up, he started "talking" in the way he does when he's excited about something.  And, boy, did he have a confused look on his face when I made a right at the light instead of a left!

I can't even say the word "car", I have to spell it because Jamison goes so berserk about a car ride.

Definitely! Ever since I got Marley at 8 weeks old I have taken him everywhere with me. He goes on car rides so much now, he is bored with them LOL. With going to training once and Gramma's once a week, we are in the car at least twice a week. He will usually just sleep in the back seat...but he will stick his head out the window if we are getting close to Gramma's, pet store, dog park.....

Just like Callie, we take our dogs everywhere. This past July we went to the U.P. of Michigan (1700 miles each way, thank you very much!) from Florida and this past November we drove up and saw friends in S.C. for the second year in a row. My boys *love* car rides....lol

Oh, please, even spelling "ride" has Caleb heading for the door!  Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a dog that doesn't catch on so quickly.  LOL

All my dogs love/loved car rides.  If Aspen got out of the yard the only way I could get him was to get in my car & drive up & down the street.  We never did achieve a good recall.  Grady doesn't care WHERE we're going, he just loves the ride.  Maghee always gave me that "you're a crazay woman" look when we were late to her accupuncture appointments.  She knew me too well. ~L~  Moe settles in his crate very nicely & just sleeps.

Going somewhere in the car is SO MUCH FUN...just ask them.  Yes, they love riding.  Heidi likes sticking her head out the window, but doesn't like the wind in her eyes.  These doggles that Roopey sent her work like a charm.  Smile

LOL....it's the same way here!  The car means treats ALWAYS so they all go bonkers.  They'll shake and cry and moan cause usually only one or two gets to go with (they take turns).

Ever try going through a drive through with 8 dogs in the car?  LOL  There's only six here now but it's still a challenge!

ETA:  LMAO @ Heidi and the doggles!  Too cute!

Gizmo loves the car more than anything else. When Gizmo was younger and didn't have a good recall yet the only way I could "call" her back was with the car.  One time she got loose on me and started dashing accross a large open field, being dog reactive it was rather scary.  First thing I did was jump in my car and turned it on, she just froze in place then ran right back and jumped in through the open window into the car.  I really came a long way with her since then.

As for Rummy, the first few months he didn't know what the car was but by 4 months old he started to associate the car with going to good places. Now he does great in the car.

Layla loves the car so much that after our walk one evening I opened the hatch back to get something I had forgotten and she jumped in before I had time to even think.

When she was a puppy it scared her the first few times, then she would just get nervous and pee in the car :( then she would get sick if it were a very long ride.  Finally I saw the vet and got some medication so we could take her to visit my sister's family about 40 miles away.  She didn't get at all sick that time, and the longer trip apparently got her used to the car and now she loves it, mostly because it leads to wonderful things like doggie play-dates and Pet Smart and agility class (and the drive-thru with Dad for a burger when Mom isn't around monitoring everyone's diet).  So many fun things that car takes her to.
