Silver labs?

    • Gold Top Dog
They look like Weimaraner/Lab mixes to me. From what I've heard (on a different dog forum), all silver "labs" can be traced back to one kennel that breeds both Weims and Labs. Kind of confirms my suspicions... [&:]

Although she doesn't have anything specifically on Silver, this is a great page on Lab color variation:

loveukaykay, that dog looks like a malformed Weim!  The color is interesting but I personally find it to be a rather ugly looking dog.  My brain screams "What's wrong with that weim?!!".   heh...

I was the person who started the thread awhile back when my coworker purchased one.  BTW, she is thinking about getting rid of him because he "got out of his cage and destroyed the house!"  I told her that he is a puppy and he needs proper excercise.  She is a habitual dog "give-awayer"  Ok, I think I just made up my own word!  And yes, that pic of a silver lab looks like a malformed weim.

I didn't search around to see that !  Yet another nice page of info from them.  Thanks for posting it [:)]

ETA:  Frankly I don't see from the pics how they can dispute that these dogs are not Wiem mixes.  You can clearly see the Wiem in them !

Sorry if this is a stupid question...but what is a DQ?

And I still cannot find silver in the standard...hmm...

By DQ I meant disqualification - can't compete in AKC conformation shows.

Just to clarify, a dog can still be purebred and possess traits that are not in the standard or are considered "faults" in the standard, including colors that are considered faults or disqualifications. This does not mean the dog is not purebred, it means it possesses traits the AKC feels are not desirable in the breed and that dog cannot show in conformation and shouldn't be bred.

Thanks Jones...for the explanation...so if they are purebred and do not meet the standards...why are they being bred?

    I found leslie____chessies link interesting!

Can you say MUTT??? lol these dogs are obviously weim mixes, you can see it clearly onmost silver labs. Also if its true about the first 'silver labs' being opps litters between a lab and weim 'breeders' would have to keep on mixing the weims in because if not the color would have been bred out.

Ive started a new project: ive been bugging all the designer dog breeders and i wrote to a silver lab kennel a few days ago asking why their top stud looked like a weim. i'll let everyone know if they reply!

ALSO I read on a site (about a year ago) that the DNA testing for the dogs will tell you that pup C's parents are dog A and dog B but that it doesnt tell you if dog A and B are purebred. Leaves alot to think on.

Marleysmom: Not everyone can have such a gorgeous looking lab like you do so they have to create these horrid designer dogs!! [;)]

I don't think they should be bred... like I said in the old thread I linked to. But I still think it's interesting to consider whether these dogs are purebred or not. I'm still not convinced that just because the dogs may appear to "look like" Weims (I thought some of them looked very Labby indeed) or because some (many, most, whatever) "silver" Labs are really crosses, that necessarily means there is no dilute chocolate or "silver" color, ever. Genes can be funky things.

I FOUND IT!!! lol, I was thinking about a site regarding these so called silver labs. The site had a link to a silver labs pedigree. Quite horrible I think. See for yourself: [linkhttp://www.geocities.com/silverlabs1/pedigrees.html]http://www.geocities.com/silverlabs1/pedigrees.html[/link]

scary indeed....the family trees have no branches!

Lord have mercy. I was looking at the pedigree and noticed that some of the dogs have "Culo" in their name. For those who don't know, culo means "ass" in Spanish. [sm=blush.gif]

I looked at Bob Culo's pedigree..and isn't he inbred? His grandsire is the same as his sire..

Please note in this pedigree, that the resulting dog, Bob, is a result of a father to daughter breeding. That daughter, Acera, being a result of a full brother to sister breeding.

    oh..
