From a "Teacup Poodle Breeder"

I have to post this! I was doing some research on some designer dogs (i.e teacup poodles, silver labs, etc) and I emailed a Teacup breeder posing as a potential buyer and asked her the basic questions 'Prices, registry and how many litters she had bred in her 18 year span as a breeder.' This is what she wrote:

Hello Julitza,
There is no way to tell you how many litters, we have had in 18 years. I
dare say hundreds or thousands. We say handraise, because they get a lot of
hands on attention. Some do get raised in the house and they know that they
are dogs with special attention and love. Your puppy is yours as a pet or
breeder. We just ask that you love your baby and take care of it. Our
puppies are AKC and vet checked before they get on an airplane. Deposits
are $500.
Male teacups start at $2000 and female teacups start at $2,500. Shipping is
$250
Call us at _______ for more information.
Thank you for your interest in our beautiful puppies. You have not seen our
beautiful babies yet. Their pictures will be on soon. Sincerely, Gina, Georgia and Goldie

Hundreds or thousands??? I know of a breeder that in 25 years only produced 6 litters! I dont even know what to write back im really shocked, maybe you guys can help me out? I want to ask her why she has produced so many litters without being overly rude.

*Note: Im not interested in purchasing I just think knowledge is power and the more I know about situations like this the more I know so I dont get myself into a situation like this.

Thank You,
Julitza

I would write back thanking her for sending you the info buy you are more interested in purchasing a puppy from a devoted reputable breeder who breeds dogs to enhance the breed rather than purchase from a puppy miller who breeds simply to make money

I agree with Mary.

The sarcastic side of me would ask just how they could hand-raise hundreds or thousands of pups.  Not to mention how many breeding pairs DO they have.

What does this really mean???? Some? I'd be asking where do the others live who are not special and get love and attention???

"hundreds or thousands" is a pretty big range. How can she not even know?
I'm picturing a pack of poodles running around a giant filthy dark barn breeding ad lib and dropping puppies right and left, with an automatic feeding device going, and she only comes in to look for a puppy of the appropriate age, color, and sex after having sold it...

I can only say that it's despicable.  Most likely the only ones that get "inside time" are the ones that have already been sold.

Write her back and tell her that you are interested in starting a breeding business of your own and how many dogs would you need to really make the kind of money that she makes?  Ask her for tips.  Ask what the bare minimum you would need to do for the litters is as you don't want to spend  all of your free time with the.  Ask her how she gets around the authorities and then send copies of all her emails to the HS and turn her in.

So I wonder... do you get a deal for buying straight from the source, thereby eliminating the middle man?  Or do the petstores get a better deal for buying in bulk?      GRRRR.
