rainy days and going potty

    rainy days and going potty

My dog absolutely hates rain and walking on damp or wet ground. She will come out reluctantly, only to stand on the sidewalk and not budge despite coaxing and some very gentle leash tugging. She will hold it until the next morning if it means going back inside the house, which is bad because she only goes to the bathroom twice a day. I've tried holding an umbrella over her and doggie raincoats and shoes (which she hates), but she still refuses to walk and go to the bathroom when it's raining out. Storm season occurs during June to October in the Philippines, the worst of which hits from July to September. It's going to be raining almost every week, and when the rain starts, it usually goes on for days. How do I get her to go potty when it's raining out?

Try a doggie raincoat and rainboots or hold an umbrella over your dog.

    They've tried it.

***add edit:  Im no expert, and I really don't know, -- Im sure someone will be along with advice.... but maybe try giving her treats when she goes outside.... if she ever does pee when its raining, praise her lots, give her treats, etc.... maybe she will start to associate pottying outside in the rain with good things.....

    Otherwise, puppy pads?

My 3 Shih Tzus are the same way.  Luckily we have a big open truck shed out back so we carry them out and put them down under the shed.

For one thing, make sure the grass is nice and short. My hesitant peer (when it comes to rain) won't do the deed if the grass is too long. Secondly, try another area. When mine withholds, sometimes I'll take her into the front yard instead. You could always try to out-stubborn your dog. Stand there and WAIT until she goes. Have a treat ready.

I so feel your pain. You're probably going to have to be more stubborn than the dog.

I have basenjis who absolutely hate the rain too.  The only way I've found to get them to go if its raining is to drag them to the public green area near our home where lots of other dogs leave their scent.  They manage to get over their reluctance to pee in the rain if they are marking over another dogs scent.  If I just try the backyard I could stay out there all day with them and they wouldn't go.  Fortunately I live in Arizona where rainy days are rare so its not too hard to manage.

I was going to post about 'rain' issues also! LOL [:)]
    My problem is very similar.
Murphy doesn't mind going for walks in the rain. He loves going for a walk, whatever the weather. What he doesn't like to do is poop in the rain. [8|]
Sometimes we'll walk for almost an hour before he gives up and finally goes..... it's really frustrating. [X(]

whinny dislikes going out in the rain or in 90 degree weather, so i can emphathize. she does the same thing, just plants her feet on the sidewalk and won't move. what i've learned to do is to be just as stubborn (actually, more stubborn) than her and pretty much demand at least a quick walk around the block so she relieves herself. i look her straight in the eye and say "come on" with a leash tug and she will usually (reluctantly) drag herself around the corner.
occasionally she will be such a brat, that she actually lays down on the sidewalk, in which case i make her get up and go from there. you may just have to be a little firmer with your dog than is normal.

...and my family thought I was nuts to take an unbrella out with the dog!
Glad to hear I'm not the only one!
I wonder what the aliens think of us carrying the doddie bag?  LOL

My dogs will almost always go in the front yard too, rain, snow, sleet.  They think it's special I guess.

I trained my dog to go on potty pads in our basement for that reason. She hates getting wet.
