tartar

    tartar

Wasn't sure where else to put this...but Kaiser has had a little bit of tartar buildup on his back teeth. What could i do to get rid of that besides brushing and a dental from the  vet? Has anyone tried greenies?

I don't think that i would feed my dogs greenies.  There was a big problem with them in the news not too long ago.  I don't remember the specifics though.  Someone on this board talked about raw carrots, which I am now going to give my dogs.  Also, marrow bones are a great idea.

Soup bones, marrow bones, etc will do a great job on the cleaning. Beau went from nasty brown, to pearly white. He's three years old and his teeth make him look like he's one.

You wont see the difference after the first bone, but after a month or so, there wont be much left to clean off.

I'm about to embark on a raw bone regimen to clean my dog's teeth, he has tartar too. The vet told me that brushing will prevent new tartar from forming but will do very little to clean what's already on there (still, she said to do it every day).

I echo the suggestion of raw bones.  Lana always gets compliments from her vet.  I give her beef ribs, marrows, and one she had was a lamb hock.

Oh, she also get's bully sticks

All 3 of mine have pearly whites. Ages 6, 3 and almost 2. Marrow bones, knuckle bones, etc...

I use bully sticks and the Chew and Brush bones are pretty good too.

My vet told me the other day that my pup needed to eat kibble to help with the tarter.. He absolutely won't eat kibble.  He does chew bones, etc., but loves canned food only.. She said after a few days of not eating kibble, he would.  What is anyone's opinion here.  He always has been a fussy eater.. Came from a rescue that was terrible, so has developed some habits on eating.. Does a dog require eating kibble?  Thanks

Can i just go to a butcher to get soup bones, etc? I don't recall seeing them in the grocery

You can go to the butcher, yes.  I don't know if I'm stating the obvious here - sorry if I am - but the bones are to be given RAW, not cooked.   Cooked bones are very dangerous, raw bones are very good!   If you get marrow bones, you may want to scoop some or most of the actual marrow out the first few times.  It's very rich and can give your dog diarrhea if he's not accustomed to it.

There is no evidence that eating kibble helps clean the teeth, and the idea that wet food is bad for the teeth is a myth. My dog eats nothing but kibble and he chews an average of one 12" bully stick every 1-2 days... and at just over a year he has noticeable tartar. So I can't say that kibble or bully sticks do much at all to help the teeth - hence why I'm bringing in some raw bones.
