Road Trip! Now where can I go with my dog?

I am planing to take off for about two weeks in August. I don't really want to fly anywere or even take a train or greyhound so instead I thought a nice road trip would be good. I want to take Gizzy along with me. Now my question is WHERE DO I GO?

Where are some nice places to travel to in the US with my dog? It will be My boyfried, Gizmo and Me in my little toyota. Where are some dog friendly motels and what do I need to take with me for my dog. I have her traveling food/water dish her folding crate and of corse I'll take plenty of food and treats. I've also thought about taking a tent so we can do some camping also. Giz loves to go camping.

I live in the Middle of New Mexico and wouldn't mind travling a two day drive to anywhere in the US. Gizmo does really good in the car so I'm not to worried about that as long as we make plenty of stops on the way.

    ANY SUGGESTIONS?

That is a lovely website and I'll probly use it to find the motels I'll stay at.

I really want to hear from people who have traved with their dog and what to exspect or where they have gone. I know I kinda limit myself from seeing some places with my dog with me but I just don't want to leave her at home. I've though about kenneling her for a few hours during the trip so my boyfriend and me could do stuff. I'm a little unshure of most kennels I've never heard of so I just don't know. I know some vet will do day bording so I might give that a shot also. If not I'll just have a lot of fun with my dog.

That is a GREAT site, there is one similiar called [linkhttp://www.petswelcome.com]www.petswelcome.com[/link] to but the otehr one has more resources. I have mamaged a pet friendly hotel for the past 6 years in Pacific Grove, CA which is between Carmel and Monterey. We have so many pet friendly places its crazy. We have a resteraunt in Carmel that even has its own doggy menu, Rory loves going there.....$8 for a doggy burger, we havnt tried that one yet, haha!

Wherever you go, get yourself a solar blanket first.  It keeps the car cooler when it's parked, so you and your dog won't be so hot.  I was able to leave two dogs crated in my SUV off and on all day on an 85 degree day in PA, and they did fine.  Of course, all the windows and the tail gate were open, plus I have a reflector for my windshield too.  I got my solar blanket at cleanrun.com.  I recommend taking one because you never know when you might break down, and it will keep a vehicle about 15 degrees cooler than it would be otherwise.

When I was in NM, I missed going to White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns.  Of course I don't know if the allow dogs (I would guess not in the Caverns).  I have taken dogs to Great Sand Dunes (in CO), Grand Canyon, and the 4 Corners area.  I've heard Mesa Verde is really nice too, but don't know about dogs.  I know La Quinta's take dogs.  If you go to Taos, be sure to go to Michael's for breakfast.  Really neat dog, but don't know about dog-friendly things to do there.

White Sands is a wonderful place to take dogs, they allow dogs only if leashed. I took my dogs there for a day trip and they just loved it! It was like a giant sand box and they could dig and dig and dig all their little doggie hearts wanted to dig. They were coved in white sand, (gypsum crystals to be more exact) Giz was just a 4 mounth old puppy then. Oh, the memories...

Anyone else know more about dog friendly places in their state?

Alaska is the most dog-friendly and dog-obsessed state I've ever lived in. I'm in remote Cordova right now (look at an Alaska map), a small town that isn't even on the road system. Sofia is with me. We drove 370 mi. to get here and then took a ferry. Someone here has an Argentinian Dogo, I've seen him walking around! Same people have a saluki mix! A shar pei tried to come home with Sofie and I on a walk today (I ran him off, he gave me that hurt look, LOL, but a fight with a shar pei is not what I consider a good time) and of course I've seen lots of various sled dogs, malamutes, wolf dogs, shitzus, chihuahuas, a chesapeake Bay retriever, lots of labs, lots of mutts...every single person has a dog.

Red Roof Inns are generally dog friendly (with no extra deposit in my experience.)  I'm a big fan of National Parks, you could try looking around the Flagstaff, AZ area...it's always nice and cool there.  Or you could try Grand Canyon Nat'l Park, I think they might have some dog friendly trails there too!

There are plenty of places in Wisconsin that cater to dog families...especially the State Parks.  Our favorite is Kohler-Andre Park on Lake Michigan.  Good place for walking the sandy beach and playing with the dogs in the water.

Big Bear (San Bernadino Mountains) in California is very dog friendly, fairly inexpensive, has tons of things to do, is not too hot, and fairly close (within two days) to you.
Many motels and cabins are very dog friendly.  Some are lakefront and allow the dogs to swim.  There's hiking, mountain biking, water sports, fishing, etc.  [linkhttp://www.dogfriendly.com/server/travel/uscities/guides/w/cities/wonlinecityCABig_Bear_Lake.shtml]http://www.dogfriendly.com/server/travel/uscities/guides/w/cities/wonlinecityCABig_Bear_Lake.shtml[/link]
    Have fun on your trip!

Was that the ferry from Seward? I didn't know they allowed dogs on it.

I've thought about driving up to Anchorage, thats where my boyfrieds parents live, they own a diving business. It's kinda far from here and I don't know about all the rules going through Canada or even if I could take a ferry from the US. I've been to Alaska several times but only on an airplain, I also almost went to UAF. I though about how geat it would be to take Giz on the costal trail, such a beautiful place and I just love the drive from Anchorage to Homer. Humm...maybe I can get an extra week off and try that.
