I spent 10 yrs working in Child Services with abused kids - I am not unaware of the damage. Deb from what I have read he did "the bare minimum" legally - clearly not morally but that is where the whole atmosphere thing becomes an issue. Paterno would have handed it off to people he believed would take care of it, and he went back to football, and yes he would have considered himself removed from the situation - this was done by an ex-coach that at that time was not a PSU employee - these were not children that Paterno had contact with or was responsible for. Firing him does nothing to fix anything it just is a huge blow to current student athletes.
Asking what they are protesting shows me that you don't have an inkling of what he has meant to that campus for 5 decades. I don't mean that as a slam - as I said I cannot describe the relationship that entire place has with him. If I hadn't experienced it I wouldn't either. The current students feel betrayed I imagine. They would have been sad to see him go at the end of the season but they feel he hasn't been treated right, fired by a phone call. If it turns out he was more culpable than we know now, then it might make some sense to me.
Anyway I suppose this should be a separate thread if we want to carry on - I will say again I am confused internally and emotionally about all of it. The kids, the families, the current students, and yes Joe Paterno. As I posted on FB, I don't know what the right actions are but I don't at this moment feel firing him is going to do any good. Oh and I whole heartedly believe Sandusky will commit suicide.
