Just need to complain! (Make me feel better!)

Hi gang. As you guys know my husband and I recently (few days ago) got our dog from a local humane society. She is super, super sweet, and is generally adjusting very well.

I'm just irritated right now thinking about the condition she is/was in. This dog was given up, apparently, because she had a flea problem that was exacerbated by the fact that these people who had her had several other animals which made it more difficult to control. Instead of helping her, I guess they just opted to give up and leave her at a place where she could have been euth'd (don't get me wrong, the shelter was a great place with kind people, but she is an older dog...)

So, she ended up at the shelter, which, since they have many other animals and not a whole lot of funding, was only able to keep an eye on her condition somewhat - she was checked over by a vet but still, you know...it's a big job. Now, we knew going into this it was possible (or maybe even likely) she would still have a flea problem. Sigh, after a few "good" looking days, she does. And, now, hooray [>:], she has worms (going to bring a sample to the vet immediately after work, I called them as soon as we found something to make sure we didn't need to bring her in ASAP. Hopefully they can give her meds right away.) Not to mention what we already knew, which is that she has some crummy looking teeth (going to try and get the full cleaning soon) and that she wasn't getting a whole lot of food, or at least, not good food - she's pretty thin (though not from a lack of eating! [:)] She has a great appetite.)

Now, I've seen the horror stories - abused animals, puppy mill dogs, etc, and I know that our dog has probably lived through nothing even close to that terrible. But it still frustrates me thinking of this dog being repeatedly infested with fleas, possibly underfed, and with a mouth that is not being properly cleaned (she has one or two cracked teeth also.) I know fleas are hard to fight, I know dogs do get fleas and worms on occasion, but nevertheless - I just can't wait until she's all cleaned up and she can just chill out at our house and stay healthy for a while!!!

OK, end of my rant! [:D] I will feel much better once the vet has checked her over and given us some stuff to fight the pests with. Just had to complain, I guess!

I'm so glad to hear you took the dog in know what you were getting yourself into and treating her. You have giver her exactly everything she needs!

Things will get easier from here on out, I'll bet.  Way to go!

Congrats on the dog!  You did such a wonderful thing adopting her from the shelter. Good luck![:D]

[:D] Thanks guys. Took a "sample" into the vet - they said it's clean! This is good, I guess, except that my DH and I know what we saw...and it pretty much fit the exact description of a tapeworm and it definitely came out of the dog. However, the sample we brought in didn't have any obvious "worms"...so...maybe she really doesn't have them? Or they are gone now? Or they just didn't show up in the sample? I guess we'll just have to watch, her appt is Thursday so in the meantime we'll keep an eye on it. They took what we did have of her history down...and said it did sound like she didn't get great care so far - not bad but not great. Sounds like she will probably need a tooth pulled. Poor baby!! Either way I'm glad it looks like the folks at the vet will be a great resource on helping to get her all caught up on care!

(It's funny...she has two cracked teeth, possible tapeworms, and recurring fleas...and she doesn't cry, she doesn't itch frantically, and she made it an entire 8 hour workday home alone, totally fine! She's happy just to be chilling out on her puppy bed and eating lots of good food (and peanut butter treats...[;)]) At least I know she's not miserable.)

Blessings on you for rescuing her.

I just want to say that I think you are great to have taken in an older dog, especially one with a few problems to clear up.  The fact that she now seems to have a "forever" home is probably apparent to her in the way you treat her.  No wonder she seems happy. [:D]

Xebby is right - you're giving her what she needs and has needed, so she will have a chance at a great future, that will look nothing like her past.

As for the stool sample coming back negative, I'm told that can happen even if the dog truly DOES have worms... So, what did your vet have to say when the stool sample came back negative but you explained the thing you saw?  Was it moving?  (sorry, not to gross anyone out, but we all know dog conversations end up on stool comments, anyway...[;)])

Good luck!  Feel free to rant and ask questions and share more pics of her.  We'll be thinking of you guys - she's a lucky girl to have a loving retirement home with a vigilant "nurse"... [:D]

Thanks so much you guys! We're trying our best, I'm so glad I've had this board as a resource (yes, in my 20's this is my first dog, ever.) We told the guy what we saw and he said he even double checked and had the vet come verify what he found/didn't find...his only guesses were that it was something unrelated on the ground (which, please, they'd have to be pretty fast-moving to be on the stool that quickly,) or that it was just something else she ate? I don't know, I'm still not convinced...if we didn't have the vet appt on Thursday I would have fought the diagnosis harder, as it is we'll just wait and see if we get a better sample of what we saw again...Here's hoping the vet was right and she doesn't have them...

Congrats on your new girl!  Is that her in your avatar?  I'm sorry if I ask questions you already answered but I've been in another world for the last couple of months it seems.  Anyway, you're doing a wonderful thing.  So what's your girl's name?  How old is she?  what is she?  Give her some lovin' from me.  I hope she knows she's safe now & will be loved to death.  Bless you!!!

Thanks! Yup, that's her celebrating her 4th of July "independence from the humane society" day, haha! She is adjusting really well - I think she is finally starting to get that she doesn't have to go back to the shelter. (She loves the bed I bought her, which is good cos I spent a pretty penny on it! They way I figure, she's an older gal and she deserves to live out her golden years in luxury!) Her name is Lady (totally suits her)...we know she is at least part Shiba Inu, possibly also part Australian cattle dog (she really looks like both, but who knows.) She is 8 years old, and her mellow attitude is perfect for my husband and I, who are working office chumps and not able to be home during the day! [:D] She is pretty laid back in the house, though I have to say, she is like a 1 year old on walks...we can barely keep up with her and we're both in our early 20's! She always wants to jog and we've gone on hour+ long walks and she still hasn't come close to tired. She seems low-key, but it's all an act! [:)]

Congradulations!!  She will forever be grateful to you and love you for saving her!! They know[:)]

Since you got her from a shelter recently it would be a good idea just to ask the vet next time to give her a dose of dewormer... that way just in case you are taken care of and if there were none its not harmful to her.

Congratulations!!  I know it's hard but don't dwell on her past, everything is being taken care of now and they live in the moment so look to her happy new life with you.  The past is over.  [:)]

I just want to say again that you have done such a great thing for this girl. She couldn't possibly have a better, more loving home. And you're doing such a great job educating yourself on what she needs. She's such a doll and I'm really happy that she's going to live the rest of her life in luxury. Keep up the great work!! [:D]

Wow, great for you!  Lady is beautiful. I thought she looked like a Shiba Inu.  She's a very lucky girl to have you as her new momma.
