Grass and dogs?

    Grass and dogs?

Do dogs eat grass because he/she is sick, or just to eat it. Its somthing i always wonder about since i was about 6.

IMVHO, no, I don't think so. If you watch (in general) the kind of grass they choose, it's usually "sweeter" grasses. I think dogs eat grass because they like it... if I'm not careful, Maddi will eat lawn clippings [8|]

pretty much every dog i've been familiar with has eaten grass on occasion. i think it is a myth that they eat it because they are sick. i agree with pumaward and believe it is something they just crave everynow and then. or in the case of my dog, every time we go outside!

Xerxes is a conniseuer of grass, leaves and wild herbs.  He looks at some lawns as if they were salad bars.  Grass, mint leaves, and alot of others I can't name are his choices, and then it's only certain parts of the grass.

I think that they like the way it tastes, they may have a need for the chlorophyll, and the extra fiber can't be bad for them.

It does help with their stomac and somthing like that, forgot all the details. Some dogs will eat excessive grass to help them vomit something in their stomic that doesn't agree with them.

If you notice some pet stores even sell grass for indoor dogs and cats. It's good for them and there really is nothing wrong with eating it.

Riley searches for the perfect blade and then snatches it ... even though I say "leave it".  It seems he just likes grass, because he doesn't throw up or anything after he eats it.  The other times he grabs the grass is when he's playing and gets frustrated chasing another dog ... and can't get him/her ... he plops in the grass and grabs a mouthful ... spits out most of it but does eat a few blades.

Both my dogs eat a lot of grass.  I think Daisy does it because Duke does.  I think the reason why Duke does it is because when he was little I thought that it would make him sick so I would always try to make him stop.  He started doing it to be funny and get a reaction out of me, now he just likes it.

Tyson LOVES grass. He eats it all the time.  It is sort of funny, because he is REALLY ball driven, but if the ball lands in a nice tall patch of grass, he will eat the grass and forget about the ball!

Both Cassidy and Mirelle like to eat grass all the time. However, they'll only eat a certian kind of grass, not the regular 'lawn' grass. I'm not sure what it's called, but it's taller with wider blades, and must be sweeter, because they both chomp on it.[;)] I've noticed that when they're out swimming and sometimes choke on the water and are coughing, then they will eat that kind of grass. Maybe it does make their stomachs feel better.

Both of my guys are grazers, they will eat grass the whole time we are out, but I am very careful, that they only eat my grass which isn't treated. It seems to me when  I watch them that it's very relaxing to them too, like they are watching tv and eating popcorn. lol

LOL Deb - that's sometimes what Riley looks like - eating popcorn and watching TV.  Thanks for the good laugh.

I agree that they eat it because they like it - and they puke it up because they don't digest it.  Max is a grass eater, but he doesn't eat just any old grass.  He likes the new *spring, early summer* grass that grows by the wildlife pond. If I could get him to eat the grass at home the same way, we could probably get rid of the lawn mower. [:D]

Shadow eats grass, some bushes, and wild pecans. And does not regurgitate. So, he must be getting some benefit, even if it's just an instinctive digestive aid, though it could also be for nutrients in the plant matter.

my dog Dixie loves eating grass too [:D] i think it is funny but at the same time very gross [:'(] sometimes he will throw up after eating a lot but most of the time he is too busy running up and down the fence with our nieghbors dog to even think of grass[sm=lol.gif]
