Puppy has learned how to unlock crate!!!

Help!  My 6 month old Havanese has just figured out how to get himself out of a double latch crate.  We found him at our bedroom door to our amazement.  Is this normal?  Husband is convinced that we have a ghost living in our home who helped him out.  I think he's just very intelligent.  Any thoughts?  And how am I supposed to keep him IN the crate going forward? I don't want to put a lock on it, tie something??  Is this normal??

    Thanks!

Smart little bugger!![:D]  Use bungee cords to keep it closed.  Or even a padlock that ISN'T closed.

The German Shepherd that I grew up with was able to do this. He was able to open doors too. I'm not kidding. He could open the doors. He was able to open the gate to his outdoor kennel too. We put a padlock, not closed, on the get doors and crate door and he couldn't get out.

I'm so glad that this is somewhat normal.  The bungee cord thing is a good idea, and the pad lock too - thank you!
We're worried that this may be a separation anxiety thing he's going through so we're letting him sleep in our bedroom now - which I love.  Hubby claims he's allergic (I think he's borderline hypochondriac) but Winston proved to be too smart - hubby must give in now!

My dog Snickers learned to open doorknobs using one paw on top and one paw on side and pulling... she added liberal use of teeth if that didn't work :) Needless to say wedon't bother leaving her in the bedroom anymore [:D]

Emma can open crates. She also busts out the other dogs. She opens gates, too. If she were tall enough, I have no dount she'd open doors. I went to the dollar store and got cheap clips. The ones that look like what mountain climbers use, but people put their keys on them. I put one on each gate, and one on her crate. She can't open anything now:) They're very easy for humans to open, but she lacks opposable thumbs.

I use a Carabiner to keep the cage closed.

    Yeah, yeah, what he said.

A carabiner is the kind that has the screw fastener, right? That's what my son had to use with Sofie's sister, Athena. She broke two canines but still got out of her cage with several different kinds of latches. [sm=sad.gif]I've had to be careful about the clips I use on Sofie's tie out and dog run, too.

Sofie figured out how to get out of a locked camper shell by turning the latches and pushing. You'll have to keep an eye on your little smarty pants!

I think this would be safer, especially with a pup.  Mine would eat bungee cords! [:@]

Wow!  I'm kinda glad mine are, ummm, a bit dimmer.  I just don't have these kind of problems...

I did a google image search for carabiner, and they looked like mine, which is a spring loaded clip.

Plastic travel kennels with the spring latches are hard to open. Emma can't get out of those. I actually tend to like them better than the metal crates, b/c I can move them easier.

My GSD mix pup can open doors and she is only four months old, it cracks me up.  So much for going to the bathroom alone....LOL!

Heck, I NEVER get to the bathroom alone.  Gypsy head butts the door and it comes flying open and then the cats follow her in! I have SUCH a huge bathroom (it's just big enough for one person and a magazine[:D]) that they are afraid I will get lost in it.  If I soak in the tub, I have the same problem!

Zoe has escaped 2 different crates, 1 time each.  We have no idea how it happened but it hasn't happened again.
