Do we sterotype certain people by the type of dog they own?

    So do we?

I have noticed that sometime we think of the owner to have some of the same behavors and styles as ther dogs. Like for example GSD owners are stong willed, state ther mind and like to stand out in a croud. While poodle owners like to dress up, have wonderful hair styles and like to show off. Or here's anouther one, BC owners are full of energy, love to be in charge of the group and just like to have fun.

Do you think you choose your dog because it best matches your personality and style?

I think everyone should choose their dogs because they best match their personality and style. [;)]

I do think people stereotype dog/owerns, though.  I know I get a giggle out of big burly men who own toy dogs or petite, "girly" women who own mastiffs. [:D]

i think this is why Pits get thier bad wrap from..so many young male men think the pits are to be used for fighting and really its just an extension of thier own misplaced aggression..

i can definitely see how a person who  educates themselves on breed types may very well seem to resemble thier dogs..i applaud them for it.

i have a couple huskies and a WD...i love to run and ride with my dogs...if you were to say i liked to do things on my own,had lots of energy, but was reserved  around strangers, you wouldnt be far off..

o course the internet forums lets me throw the whole reserved around strangers out the window(no pun intended lol).

Just thinking about my own dog I guess I'm somewhat like her. I'm a little shy around people I don't know but once I get to meet them I'm very open. If I was allowed to I would sleep all day but when ther is work to be done I'm on top of it even if I'm not perfect.

This is kinda fun, I never realized how much I am like my dog.

It's so sad but yes it's true. I was in the store the other day and the little candy and toy quarter macines had "homie" dogs. Like the little figurins desiged to look like gangsters except they were dogs and all were pitts. Sad that even the toy world does this to to breed.

I think I agree... it's kind of wierd... me an Maddi are actually quite alike.

When I was a little 'un ([:D]) I was really a terror... just like she was. As I've grown older, I've become reserved around strangers and only really open up/talk a lot to people I've known for a while. Maddi is shy around people as well. She'll only allow pets once she's gotten to know someone (it took a week of every day contact with my grandmother before she could pet Maddi). However, once Maddi knows someone, she really opens up and acts like herself.

As far as choosing a breed that's like my personality... Well, I really wanted and Akita at first, so I guess you could say I did... at first... but I ended up with a Malamute which, as a breed, is a "social butterfly" breed.. which is a almost a complete turnaround from what I am (which is shy).

Anyway, I agree, I chuckle quite a bit when I see a dog show where a handler looks like a big biker dude, but the dog is a peke or something [:D].

If people stereotype me because I own a 5.5 pound toy poodle, they end up way off the mark, but I do think people stereotype others by the dog they own.  Take a person and have them walk down the street with a beagle on a leash, then change that image to a large, powerful rottie, and then to a large, docile dane, and different impressions of the person will be made each time.

I am the most non-fancy person I know, so my owning a toy poodle is a hoot to some friends.  Most people have told me I really should have gotten a bull dog.

When I had the three younger boys in town for the vet, whoever DS was walking wasn't walking nicely so I took him as well and DS dashed ahead to open the car.  In less than a block I heard someone comment that I must train "police dogs" and another say that I must live in a really dangerous area to have so many big "protection" dogs.  One lady stopped me and asked if they were for sale since apparently no sane person walks three dogs in town unless they are trying to sell them........

My brother says I'm more of a 'pit' than Boss is when I'm mad. But in other ways I can see where I am a lot like my dog. We've both been hurt pretty bad in our past so meeting new people we are very guarded and will lash out if we feel threatened. We both still love with all we got if we feel the person is worth it.

And ways Gracie and I are alike, we both can be very sweet but we don't take any crap from anyone and will get loud if necessary.

Someone mentioned the Homies and the pittie dogs. I actually have a couple of those, not all of them make the pittie look bad. One of the ones I have is the dog laying back with sunglasses on. Not all of them are gangsters either, I have a set of Trailer Park Homies.

Although I have not personally gotten comments like this, a woman on another board I visit had someone tell her that if she had pits then she was obviously a drug dealer [8|]

I think Sally and I are similar, except she likes people more than I do.

A few years ago, I was working on a new school standing on a steel deck frame into which a concrete floor would be later poured. The school was on a hill and we were on the second floor. It was January, approx. 16 F with about a 25 mph north wind. My project manager asked me how we could stand the bitter cold. I told her, "I'm part Husky. The colder it gets, the louder I bark."

I don't know if it's stereotyping or if we just find the dog that suits us so well, whether assumptions fit or not.

I would have to agree that I have chosen my pets b/c they match my personality.  I tend to pick very active dogs.  My dal was super energetic and Dasher, my JRT, well....need I say more! [:D

Romeo is a mutt and now that I think about it we are quite alike.  Romeo likes people, but only loves a few.  I know a lot of people who swear I am the craziest person in the world, but only my parents and 2 other people know me really, really well.  Romeo loves to play, is always willing to try something knew and most importantly knows when to turn it off.  I never say no to spending a nice evening out w/friends...as far as the new...I am afraid of heights so I have gone hang gliding, have jumped out of airplanes and had dinner on a hot air balloon with my parents.
And the most important thing we both have in common: we love food. [;)]

With my dog and I, I think so.  Temperamental and they call my dog "smart," which I hope I am too.

But I do know a standard poodle breeder who is one of the manliest women I know.
