I just felt my first earthquake !!

Congratulations!!  And welcome to the CA lifestyle. Big Smile DS #1 just called me from Ohio to tell me he felt it, but I told him that since he was a CA kid he could just reassure everyone to "chill out ... it's only an earthquake." I hope it didn't do any damage because I'd be willing to bet that absolutely nothing on the east coast is built to earthquake preparedness standards.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JACKIE!! CakeGift

Happy Birthday, Jackie!  A nice dinner out and a fattening dessert is all you need to make a birthday special (in my opinion).  As long as I don't have to cook dinner and there's chocolate involved in the dessert, it's all good!  Enjoy your day!

Karen, you're not alone --- finding out something can be successfully machine washed rather than dry cleaned would make me very happy.  Definitely good news for the wallet!

Having been through a hurricane, I know how scary they can be.  But at least there's some warning if you want to save yourself (even if you can't save your property).  Earthquakes are different -- no warning at all.  We'd only been in Oregon a few months when we had a 5.6 earthquake early one morning with the epicenter about 25 miles from us.  DH might have slept through it if I hadn't started screaming my head off.  The sound was what woke me up -- I thought a train or plane was about to crash into our house (that was the sound BEFORE the house started shaking).  Then the noise of everything rattling got really loud.  It only lasted a minute or two, but I was sure I was going to die because the roof was going to fall in on us!  Talk about the shakes -- I needed a drink after it was over!!  Stick out tongue

My BFF who lives in Tampa and I were just talking about this last night. We both grew up in So. Calif. and so earthquakes were no biggie. She said she'd prefer the not knowing vs. the days of build up in anticipation of a hurricane. It helps that neither of us ever experienced an earthquake that did any damage to the areas we lived in. Hurricanes don't actually scare me as much as tornadoes do.

Jackie - I hope work slows down for you and you're able to leave early and have a wonderful evening. Happy Birthday!! Cake

Swamped with work here, so back to it I go.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JACKIE!   This song is dedicated to your birthday evening events.  AND, to our friends in the northeast who already had their excitement for the day!

I didn't grow up here but hurricanes have never been horrific for me.  I think as a homeowner it's worse because you can fear the destruction and the expense.

Several years ago when we had Charlie, Frances, etc. it was about 2 weeks after we got Billy and David, Foxy, Billy and I went to a motel down in Kissimmee (cos David had to work thru the whole thing b/c he works at a resort) -- THEN I was scared b/c we had a big old *very* dead tree RIGHT in front of our bedroom and I was afraid we'd be crushed if it fell.  But the tree is history and now I'm really not terribly afraid.

Twisters DO scare me -- there's no warning and they are completely capricious.   A few years ago one felled a huge live oak next door to me (literally like 15 feet from my living room but it fell the "other way";) -- and yet a leaf on my outside patio table wasn't even moved!!  So weird.

I think Irene's gonna skip Florida thankfully, but I'm already praying for all my Carolina buddies and up the east coast.

As far as Luna's concerned there just isn't enough STUFF she could pile in front of the door in that case!! *smile*

Barb, you know me too well!  LOL

Thanks for all the nice birthday wishes. :)  I don't think I'll get to leave here early but I plan on having a nice evening with DH.  The dessert will definitely contain chocolate. Big Smile

Happy Birthday Jackie! have a wonderful day too.

The earthquake was felt a bit over in Harrisburg, Pa this afternoon across the river from us, guess I slept through it. lol

I guess that earthquake was felt in lansing from what people are saying. Im sure it wasnt much of anything though. Im more concerned about how this hurricane might affect my flight outta here on fri. I really dont want a lot of turbulance pls mother nature.

I should have driven down here. Next time i will. I really hate not having a car and im not a big city person. Im so bored, everything closes at 5 which is when we get done for the day! Im prob going to be done with this walk in the woods book by tongith at this rate. It doesnt help that the class im in is painful either (federal aid 101) good important stuff to know but its kind of like listening to someone read the dictionary....for 4 straight days.

I was in highschool in FL when Hurricane Andrew hit Miami  (One of only three Category 5's to make landfall in the US.)  That changed my lackadaisical opinion of hurricanes.

Julie, I'd be bored out of my mind too.  The training sounds mind numbing.  Hope you find something to do.  You should have hooked up with some dog peeps for the evening.  Wish I were there, we could go exploring the city.

I'm so tired after the crazy day at work but I'm going to put my party hat on and go out for the evening with Charles. Party!!! Margaritas or mojitos?  Wine and chocolate for later.  Thanks, Deb. :)  The dogs were so incredibly helpful opening the package. lol

Thanks again everyone for the birthday wishes.  Take a tip from me and don't let your age bother you as you get older.  You only get one chance at life so might as well live it instead of worry it to death. lol
