how old were you when you started really getting into dogs?

so yeah basically like the topic says: what age were you when that "turning point" came and you were into dogs i.e. researching nutrition, training, breeds, accumulating canines, etc. (i know some may have been into dogs from the get go!)

I've always loved dogs for some reason, but the whole researching thing came when I was in the first grade.
Of course, I only got a dog like a decade later.

18-19, I started loving dogs because They are cute and also smart. I always wanted a dog.  But I started getting into dog when my niece had her pup/dog. I really bonded, and fell in love with the dog. I planned on adopting her, but she ran away before I even had a chance to go pick her up.[:(]
So Basically I'm trying to find a replacement, and cared the dog on my own.So right now I'm trying to find the right dog to adopt.

I am a slow learner, we had dogs during my childhood, but none that were mine or that I was in love with, I've always been an animal lover. But when I was 45 (I know!) that's when I made the complete turn around, it was when I got Brando but it wasn't because of Brando it was because of Princess the Pap before him, I promised her I would take care of all the other doggies, as she went to the bridge.

My family owned dogs and we were pretty good dog owners.  We did however use tie outs when I was a kid.  I did training and tricks with the dogs.  I even chose college based on where my dog could live with me.  I started changing to the "dog fancy" approach to ownership with my first dobe, competition obedience, and dog clubs.  It grew from there.  I have gone from backyard breeder purchases to contracts with long time highly respected breeders with dogs who are competitive in multiple venues.  I belong to two breed clubs and an all breed kennel club.  I teach obedience classes for the kennel club.  I chair the Obedience and Rally events at our annual dog show.  I have been the herding chair of two national specialities.  We plan at least one vacation per year around national specialties.  (this year it was tervs in May and Mals in Oct)

I fed Purina for years and still use a Pro Plan product for Dess and Baylor.  Nora gets Solid Gold.  They get a raw meal in the AM.  I do shots during the first year and switch to titres and boosters based on results.  I never planned to breed but, Nora has one litter in specified in her contract (provided she passes OFA hips, elbows, cardio, thyroid, CERF (and epilepsy if the test is ready).  She already has points (came with em) and has started herding.  I do need to start basic training too (but she came with lots of manners).  Boy is it spoiling to bring in a well socialized 7 month old puppy.  The majority of people would gasp at the prices I am willing to pay for dogs.

My dog obsession started when I was about 4- while everyone else my age had imaginary people friends, I had an imaginary ;puppy-  a yellow lab called Samantha [:D].

I don't remember a time when I didn't love dogs - and horses.  I got my first dog at age 7, and my first horse at age 27, although I was put on my first pony when I was about 1 1/2, with dad holding...  I rode ponies before I had a bike with training wheels, and I walked the neighborhood with strays and neighbors' dogs alike (I still remember you, Sparky & Smoky).

I have always loved dogs as a child. When growing up I can count the number of dogs my parents allowed me to have because my mother was more of a kitty person then and didn't understand dogs.

It wasn't until I became an adult in my late thirties that I started research and understanding dogs. I have always been a dog magnet. They are drawn to me as I am to them. Now my home is filled with wet loving noses and wiggly bums. The ironic thing is my parents now have four dogs and I am having to teach them what they are all about. My mother especially. She advised she wished she had of allowed me to have a dog or two as I was growing up and appologised to me for being so harsh about it.

My very first childhood memory is of me waking up in the dog house with 3 other dogs.  I was about 2 at the time, apparently I was *their* puppy.  I've loved dogs my whole life but didn't start doing serious research until about 4 years ago when I was deciding which canine would be appropriate for my family/lifestyle etc.

I'd say my real turning point came about 15 years ago when I finally got on the internet.  That's when I started learning about responsible breeding and the importance of choosing the right breed for the right person/family.  I'm sorry to say that before that, I didn't see anything wrong with purchasing from a pet store or from a byb.   But I've loved dogs my entire life.  I wrote this when I was about 6 years old:
