how and why did you give your dog his/her name?

Talus:  "Last of the Roman Bronze gods who circled around the island of Crete and threw stones at oncoming ships to protect the islanders"

Since Bordeaux's were around in Roman times, we wanted a Roman name...

...he's my little bronze god of protection[:D][:D][:D]

We wanted to give her a Canadian name.

We picked Chinook. It's Indian name means "snow eater."  The Chinook winds are the warming winds that blow in during the winter from the pacific northwest and move east across the Rockies and can melt a foot snow in just a few hours.

And since she came from the F-litter we had to register her with an F name. For that we picked Foehn. They are the warming winds that travel through the European alpine regions.

We haven't been pronouncing the name as it sounds. After telling the breeders what we wanted to name her, they began calling her by her name before she came home with us...With their accents it sounds more like She-nuke, so that is how we continued to say her name. [:)]

Mika was named by her foster mom after a dog she used to have called Miko.

I looked it up and Mika has two meanings: intelligent raccoon (Native American) and gift from God (Hebrew), the latter of which she certainly is!

I chose Zoe's name.  In the shelter, she was so...quiet.  I thought the name Zoe would give her some pep and energy.  Be careful what you wish for, eh?  Now she's so bouncy and vibrant, but adorable!

My mom insisted on having a say in Bears' name.  It came down to Bear or Ziggy - and he is so obviously NOT a Ziggy!  plus, i hoped the name "Bear" would give him some much needed courage.

Willows original "owner's" wife thought her blue coloring looked just like the pussywillow's in their yard.  They then shortened it to Willow.

When DH was bringing her home I wasn't even sure what her name was.  I had decided that as long as it wasn't anything mean or implying viciousness that if she knew it I'd keep it.

They had several cats all named after cheese.  The one I remember most was Lacey Swiss.

Ginny was named for West Virginia, where she was found. Animal Control named her "Briney" when the found her...don't ask me why hah.

Her full name is:  Virginia Clarabelle

    Ha ha

I love reading these name threads!

DH and the kids at work named Shaq. I really did not think the name fit him, and I thought it was so corny. I remember feeling really stupid when I called the breeder, and let her know what we would be calling him. (Our breeder tries to use the puppies new name, so they are familiar with it when they come home. I must say its a great system!) By the time Shaq came home, and as he grew the name really DID fit him. Now I can't imagine calling him anything other then Shaq!

DH and I named Marley on the way home with her. We were listening to Bob Marley CDs, and at the time I thought it was such a creative name for a girl dog. Now I realize, it's not so creative, and tons of other dogs are named Marley, but I still like it! We also call her Maisie or Mae-Mae. Marley has tons of nicknames[:)]

Digital came with his name.  Not what I would have named a dog, but it's been a great name.  And it's not what you think; he was named after:

Jet's registered name was "Saint or Sinner" and the breeder was calling him saint.  I told her I couldn't call a basenji Saint.  She told me I could call him Sinner.  Well, I wasn't about to call a badsenji Sinner.  (Can you imange the living up to he'd do with that name?)  So, we called him Jet.  Not sure why.

Mucha (pronounced mooka) was named after Alphonse Mucha

Nice name for a little Belgian girl.

When I got my puppy, I wanted an orginial name. And for some reason 1920-1940's common names appeal to me. They aren't used much anymore. So I went through a list of "old" names. And for some reason Rupert stuck. He's a rotti. Big, laid back and lazy. And that just seems like a Rupert to me. [:D]

Brown was already named, and he responded to it, so we never changed it. He looks like a Brown to me, I guess.

Grey had some really, really had name in the shelter. It was spelled Zaltana, but it was pronounced something like Zol-va-war...don't ask, I have no idea. Anyway, Brett came up with Grey, and Grey looks like a Grey, so that's it.

I wanted to name my dog Angel or Cotton, but my dad didn't want a sissy name. lol
So we named her Jetta after his white volkswagon Jetta TDI ( his favorite car and his baby). He liked the dog a lot better after that!

Shadow had his name when we first got him and it seemed to fit. Although, plenty of times, I call him Pretty Boy, because he is.

We just got a new stray kitten. The lady who's house she was hanging around has daughters that named her Chi (I don't know why). We have renamed her Jade because her eyes are jade green.

Winnie got her name cause she whines a lot for no apparant reason.  Whiney = Winnie.
Lily, I can't remember.  Hubby thought she was the color of a Lily.  It was a name that just popped in our head and fit her well.

Gingerbread got his name because I like food names (especially dessert ones) and because of his coloring. [:)]

Since my BF and I are true partners in every sence of the word and do everything together, we had to agree on a name. Me and my OCD nature, I compiled a list of a 116 names I thought were decent then put them into a spreadsheet, alphabetized it and put 2 checkboxes next to each name. I gave the list to Chris and he checked off the ones he liked. Then I checked off the ones I liked. Any name that had 2 checkmarks was a name to be considered. I think we had maybe 10 we both liked. Then we met Gracie and asked the breeder which names she liked. She really liked Gracie and it fit the dog well.

I wanted to name her Bunny, but the BF said NO WAY!!
