Non edible underwear question...

    Non edible underwear question...

My husband and I were gone for about 5 hours today at a cookout.  Wrigley was going to get to go, but I thought they might have firecrackers (and sure enough they did) so he stayed at home so he wouldn't be scared.  Anyway, my closet door was left open and Wrigley got into our clothes hamper and ate most of a pair of my underwear.  I feel horrible that he was able to get to them, he doesn't get into things generally, but unfortunately he's "into that."  Anyway, he is acting normally and he had a small but normal looking bm when we returned.  Should I be worried?  What should I look for to know if I need to go to the vet?

He will probably be fine but things to look for are if he starts acting lethargic, his eating or dinking habits change, if hes not pooping normally...

Just monitor his poops to make sure things are still moving along like they should.  He may throw up... just keep an eye... I think our instincts kick in with this sort of thing - if in doubt take him - if not just for your own comfort, cant hurt to be sure.

Oh, Wrigley, what are you thinking??

I think Amy is right, just keep an eye and if he starts acting sick then get him checked out.  They are able to handle some very odd things in their system.

You may want to even check with your vet. A friend's dog also ate some underwear and became very ill and required surgery. It was the elastic in the underwear that caused the problem. Good luck!

Eskie, ditto to all the advice you've gotten, and I commiserate with you on owning an underwear obsessed dog.

My Misty and her foster brother know that my teenage daughter's room is a pigpen with undies all over the floor, and when they can, they push in the door and grab a thong (gosh, how can she wear those things).  If there's only one available, then the fight ensues, each with an end in their mouths, tugging with all their mights.  You would be amazed how far those things can stretch out when pulled between two dogs.  My daughter does not find this nearly as amusing as I do.

I hope your little guy digests the underwear properly.

Last week I got out of the shower and walked into my bedroom to find a pair of underwear in the middle of the floor. Our dirty clothes basket is in the linen closet, which we had been leaving open because our cat likes to hide in there. As I was picking up the underwear, I looked in Loki's crate and saw 8 more pairs! Sometime during the night, the dogs very carefully (all the rest of the clothes were still neatly in the basket) removed every pair of underwear from the basket and hid them away in the crate. Thankfully, none of them had been chewed. But I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Crazy dogs! [:D]

I do agree though that swallowing a pair of underwear could cause serious problems for  a dog. And I would watch him very carefully for the next few days.

Good news (I think).  This morning, under my bed, Wrigley vomited his "treat" from yesterday.  I was glad to see that it was most likely the whole thing.  I am still keeping an eye on him, but I feel better now that he vomited it back up.  Silly silly doggy...

My dog made me some crotchless panties the other day. [sm=lol.gif]
According to my vet, the classic signs of a dog with a stomach/intestinal blockage are vomiting accompanied by loss of appetite and changes in stool (either constipation or diarrhea). If he continues to eat normally I'd say you're in the clear.

Another sign of intestinal foreign body (along with the other symptoms) is excessive rear leg stretching, like they just woke up from a long nap (but didn't).

Malcolm ate womens underwear (thongs, so maybe not as much material) until he was 4 yrs old.  I've been lucky that he always vomited them up.  And that's one way to teach the teenager to clean up her stuff!
